Frederick II. king of Prussia and elector of Brandenburg, waa born the 24th of January 1712, and began his reign the 31st of May 1740; so that he was 28 years of age when his father died. He had an early taste of literature and polite arts, and shewed a particular passion for French breeding and delicacy of manners, in opposition to the inelegant customs which prevailed at his father's court. It is well known that the late king was a lover of drinking, a vice which in few countries is more familiar than in Germany. The prince abominated this vice, and particularly the custom of swallowing large draughts of malt liquor. This and other correspondent circumstances at length determined him to leave his father in a secret manner, and go, as it was said he intended, to the British court; but the attempt was frustrated, and cost an unhappy gentleman his head.
