Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lion of St. Mark: A Story of Venice in the Fourteenth Century I had stayed at home, and I have learned to speak your tongue. But I do not know that I like it better than home. Things are different, you see. There was more fun at home. My father had two or three apprentices, whom I used'to play with when the shop was closed, and there were often what you would call tumults, but which. Were not serious. Sometimes there would be a fight between the apprentices of one ward and another, a shout would be raised of Clubs 1' and all the 'prentices would catch up their sticks and pour out of the shops, and then there would be a fight till the city guard turned out and separated them. Then there used to be the shooting at the butts, and the shows, and the Mayday revels, and all sorts of things. The people were more merry than you are here, and much more free. You see, the barons, who are the same to us that your great families are to you, had no in uence in the city. You are a nation of traders, and so are we but in London the traders have the power, and are absolute masters inside their own walls, caring nothing for the barons, and not much for the king. If any one did wrong he got an open and fair trial. There was no fear of secret accusations. Every one thought and said as be pleased. There was no Lion's Mouth, and no Council of Ten. Hush hush Francisco, the other said, grasping his arm. Do not say a word against the council. There is no saying who may be listening. And he looked nervously round to see if any one was within earshot. There it is, you see, his companion said. So long as we have a safe conscience in London we are frightened at nothing, whereas here no one can say with certainty that he may not before to-'morrow morning be lying in the dungeons of St. Mark without the slightest idea in the world as to what his crime has been. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queen of the Adriatic: Or Venice Past and Present In the following pages, our restricted limits will con fine us to the merest summary - a skeleton, which it would need an abler hand to clothe with flesh and blood. Yet, so deep is the charm which like a magical light sur rounds the history of the Queen of the Adriatic-x - so full are her annals of touches of heroism, devotion, and gran deur, and even of the highest pathos and the most solemn gloom - that we are not without hopes the reader may be induced to follow with some degree of interest the rapid sketch we have attempted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries: A Sketch of Venetian History From the Conquest of Constantinople to the Accession of Michele Steno, A. D. 1204-1400 I ought to add that what I said in the Introduction to my former book did less than justice to the great work of Romanin, which I have learnt to trust more and more. He is not a master of style, but his Storz'a Documcnz'ala is an early model, and a very good one, of the kind of history founded on original documents that is becoming every year more and more the most useful and highly appreci ated product of historical work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venetia and Northern Italy: Being the Story of Venice, Lombardy Emilia The object of this book is to recall familiar scenes to those who have visited them, to suggest them to others, and to be of use upon the spot. It deals in outline with the history, architecture, and art of the towns of Northern Italy which lie within the triangular plain bounded on the north by the Alps, on the west by the Apennines, and on the east by the Adriatic Sea roughly, with the pleasant land that from Milano slopes to Rimini. It embraces the Lombard Lakes and the Lombard Plain; the chief towns that lie in the valley of the Po and its tributaries, and along the great [emilian Way, which the railway follows, from Como and Milan to Bologna, Rimini, and the sea. Following the railway northwards through Ravenna, Ferrara, and Padua to Venice, and omitting the north-eastern portion of the Veneto, it treats of the towns that lie at the foot of the Alps from Vicenza, Verona, and Brescia to Bergamo. In each Italian town there is a distinct personality, an individual charm, the outcome of a history and development so curiously individual and distinct. For throughout the period when, apart from Roman times, the art and architecture of these towns were in making. Book excerpt: "I hope you never reach a day where you have to choose between your band and your relationship." Ava Tomei seems to have it all: she's the lead singer of Buffalo-based symphonic metal band Handel's Messiah and is in a committed relationship with the band's keyboard player and brilliant lead composer Killian Sterling. But as the band hits the studio to record their fifth album, Ava and Killian can no longer hide the cracks in their relationship from their bandmates-or from themselves. What started as an artistic collaboration between Ava and Killian six years before quickly bloomed into a passionate romance. Then, when the original lead singer of Handel's Messiah-and Killian's ex-girlfriend-leaves the band right in the middle of the band's world tour, Killian calls on Ava to fill in. Ava is plunged into the pressures of stepping in to front one of metal's biggest rising bands amidst fan disappointment, skepticism from her new bandmates, the physical demands of a world tour, and sexism in the metal scene. But she also has the chance to fulfill her wildest dreams, and to do it at the side of the man she loves. Still, as Ava's desire to express her creativity comes to a head with Killian's artistic dominance, they are forced to confront whether what they have can be repaired-and what will happen to their band if not. Told in alternating storylines that show Ava and Killian's seemingly fairytale past and their fraught present, Heavy Metal Symphony is a novel of rock stars, ambition, creative control, finding your voice, and, of course, heavy metal.
