Book An Exposition of the Historical Writings of the New Testament Vol 1 of 3

Download or read book An Exposition of the Historical Writings of the New Testament Vol 1 of 3 written by Timothy Kenrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Historical Writings of the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 3: With Reflections Subjoined to Each Section; The Gospel of Matthew He has ventured upon only one correction of a high er kind. It was formerly the Opinion of Mr. Kenrick, that the Christian Scriptures describe persons who leave the present world in a condition of unrepented guilt, as doomed to future annihilation agreeably to which idea, he explained those passages in the histor ical books of the New Testament, that speak of the punishment of the wicked in another state. But, dur ing the last years of his life, it was his persuasion, that this sentiment is unsupported by any declarations either of Jesus Christ or of his apostle-s; and he thought, in common with many excellent and learned men, that even the intensest sufferings of the transgressor will be corrective and remedial, and issue, finally, in universal order, happiness, and virtue. To discuss the arguments in behalf of this tenet, or those against it, is not the province of the editor, who, indeed, does not consider himself as responsible for the truth or falsehood of any of the positions, or for the soundness or fallacy of any of the reasonings, occurring in this work. Yet, in his own judgment, he would have ill discharged his duty to the author, and to the public, had he permitted the following pages to represent Mr. Kenrick as holding a doctrine which his friends and hearers knew that he had discarded. Book A Catholic Introduction to the Bible

Download or read book A Catholic Introduction to the Bible written by John Bergsma and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 1066 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many Catholics are familiar with the four Gospels and other writings of the New Testament, for most, reading the Old Testament is like walking into a foreign land. Who wrote these forty-six books? When were they written? Why were they written? What are we to make of their laws, stories, histories, and prophecies? Should the Old Testament be read by itself or in light of the New Testament? John Bergsma and Brant Pitre offer readable in-depth answers to these questions as they introduce each book of the Old Testament. They not only examine the literature from a historical and cultural perspective but also interpret it theologically, drawing on the New Testament and the faith of the Catholic Church. Unique among introductions, this volume places the Old Testament in its liturgical context, showing how its passages are employed in the current Lectionary used at Mass. Accessible to nonexperts, this thorough and up-to-date introduction to the Old Testament can serve as an idea textbook for biblical studies. Its unique approach, along with its maps, illustrations, and other reference materials, makes it a valuable resource for seminarians, priests, Scripture scholars, theologians, and catechists, as well as anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Bible.

Book The New Cambridge History of the Bible Volume 1 From the Beginnings to 600

Download or read book The New Cambridge History of the Bible Volume 1 From the Beginnings to 600 written by James Carleton Paget and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 1057 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed significant discoveries of texts and artefacts relevant to the study of the Old and New Testaments and remarkable shifts in scholarly methods of study. The present volume mirrors the increasing specialization of Old Testament studies, including the Hebrew and Greek Bibles, and reflects rich research activity that has unfolded over the last four decades in Pentateuch theory, Septuagint scholarship, Qumran studies and early Jewish exegesis of biblical texts. The second half of the volume discusses the period running from the New Testament to 600, including chapters on the Coptic, Syriac and Latin bibles, the 'Gnostic' use of the scriptures, pagan engagement with the Bible, the use of the Bible in Christian councils and in popular and non-literary culture. A fascinating in-depth account of the reception of the Bible in the earliest period of its history.
