Book excerpt: This letter was written by the Apostle Paul to the Christians of Corinth, and it concerns questions of vital importance relative to the life and ministry and message of the church. While the circumstances under which these questions arose were largely local and temporary, their treatment by the apostle is of immediate interest and abiding value for the reason that he discusses each one in the light of some permanent principle. - Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the First Epistle to the Corinthians The Grecian Peloponnesus is connected with the continent by an isthmus from four to six miles wide. On this isthmus stood the city of Corinth. A rocky eminence, called the Acrocorin thus, rises from the plain almost perpendicularly, to the height of two thousand feet above the level of the sea, and is sufficiently broad at the summit for a town of considerable size. From the top of this abrupt hill the eye reaches towards the east over the expanse of the AEgean sea, with its numerous islands; and westward, towards the Ionian sea, a prospect scarcely less inviting was presented. Looking towards the north, the eye rests on the mountains of Attica on the one hand, and north-eastern Greece on the other. The Acropolis of Athens was clearly visible at a distance of forty-five miles. As early as the days of Homer, Corinth was an important city. Its position made it, in a military point of view, the key of the Peloponnesus; and its command of a port on two seas, made it the centre of commerce between Asia and Europe. Book The First Epistle to the Corinthians

Download or read book The First Epistle to the Corinthians written by Charles Kingsley Barrett and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its appearance nearly 35 years ago, Black's New Testament Commentary Series has been hailed by both scholars and pastors for its insightful interpretations and reliable commentary. Each book in the series includes: an insightful introduction to the important historical, literary, and theological issues; key terms and phrases from the translation highlighted in the commentary where they are discussed; explanations of special Greek or foreign terms; references to important primary and secondary literature; and a Scripture index. Perhaps more than any other Pauline letter, 1 Corinthians is known for affording insight into the nature and world of the earliest Christian communities. Whether it concerns Corinthian disputes over "wisdom," debates over "speaking in tongues," or questions about "resurrection," 1 Corinthians shows us the early church "warts and all." And that is what makes it such exciting" and relevant" reading today! Eminent New Testament scholar C. K. Barrett makes the text come alive both in its original setting and in the life of the church today. Barrett's arguments will challenge even the most seasoned scholars to rethink their interpretation of the many controversial passages.
