This book was released on 2018 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored leadership practices of presidents of institutions of Christian higher education in Myanmar and their vision for community engagement through their curriculum. This study sought to answer four main research questions: (a) What are the leadership practices of presidents in leading their institutions in Myanmar for the improvement of their institutions and communities? (b) What kind(s) of curriculum (curricula) should Christian higher education institutions in Myanmar have for the betterment of communities? (c) What are the leadership practices of presidents of Christian higher education institutions in Myanmar that lead their students to be engaged in the community? (d) How does the vision of presidents of Christian higher education institutions in Myanmar contribute to the advancement of their institutions and the church and/or community? -- This qualitative study used a grounded theory approach. The sample for this study consisted of twenty-five purposefully selected presidents of Christian higher education institutions in Myanmar for the interview. In addition, fifty community leaders from different locations of institutions, where their presidents were interviewed were purposefully selected for five focus group Interviews. Data were analyzed by using NVivo 11. -- The analysis yielded seven themes. In regards to the leadership practices and the vision of presidents, three themes: academic leadership, roles of presidents and a God-given vision were discussed. Related to curriculum of Christian higher education, two themes: holistic education curriculum and mission-oriented curriculum were identified. In response to the work of community engagement, two themes: important resources and field education were discoursed. -- In light of the findings, implications and suggestions for the educational ministry were considered, specifically, for current and future presidents of Christian higher education institutions. Suggestions for presidents include: creating an inclusive spirit on the campus, making preparations to handle the challenges, improving leadership skills, transforming a God-given vision into reality, nurturing the relationship with God, staying connected with the work of the church, leading the curriculum committee, finding important resources for their institutions to be engaged in the community and promoting field education programs.

Download or read book The Relationship Between the Leadership Practices of Presidents and the Organizational Culture of Christian Colleges and Universities written by Jeremy Blake O'Dell and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the leadership practices of presidents and the organizational culture of Christian colleges and universities. The leadership practices of presidents were measured utilizing the Leadership Practices Inventory-Self (LPI-S) and the Leadership Practices Inventory- Observer (LPI-O). The spiritual leadership practices (a combination of spiritual gifts and leadership behaviors) of presidents were measured utilizing the Spiritual Leadership Practices-President (SLP-P) and the Spiritual Leadership Practices-Employee (SLP-E) scales. Organizational culture types were assessed utilizing the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI). //p// The target population for this study was the presidents of the 115 member institutions of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) in the United States. Participants in this study consisted of the presidents and a random sample of administrators, faculty members, and administrative staff members from each participating institution. Out of the 115 presidents and institutions in the target population, 35 responded that they could not participate due to various reasons. This situation left a convenient sample of 80 presidents and institutions. A total of 32 Presidential Questionnaires were completed and returned to the researcher for a response rate of 40%. A total of 56 of 96 Employee Questionnaires were completed and returned to the researcher for a response rate of 58.33% //p// Results from the statistical analysis of the data and hypotheses revealed statistically significant positive relationships between the leadership practices Model the Way (MTW), Inspire a Shared Vision (ISV), Challenge the Process (CTP), Enable Others to Act (EOA), Encourage the Heart (ETH) and the Clan organizational culture type. Results also revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between the leadership practice Challenge the Process (CTP) and the Adhocracy organizational culture type. In addition, results revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between the Spiritual Leadership Practices-Employee (SLP-E) scale and the Clan organizational culture type. Thus, there is a relationship between the leadership practices of presidents and the organizational culture of Christian colleges and universities.

Book The Role of Presidential Leadership in Promoting University community Engagement

Download or read book The Role of Presidential Leadership in Promoting University community Engagement written by Sawsan Tabry Awwad and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weerts' model of Institutional Commitment to Community Outreach and Engagement (2005) was adapted in this qualitative action research case study to fill a gap in the literature regarding: (a) a private university president's role in promoting "A Private University with a Public Purpose"; and (b) differences between public and private university presidents when impacting community engagement. Document analysis and interviews with thirty internal and external University stakeholders yielded the following conclusions: Leadership : The President substantially and positively impacted engagement through: (a) speeches, documents, and strategic plans; (b) intellectual and political support for engagement; (c) funding decisions and priorities; (d) public face of engagement; (e) leadership style, personal, and professional skills; and (f) attracting external funding for projects that benefit the University and the community. Campus Communications : the President: (a) dramatically enhanced campus publications; (b) branded the University's engagement identity; and (c) provided community leaders and partners direct access to his senior administration. Faculty and Staff Involvement : The President indirectly fostered faculty, staff, and students' engagement by drawing upon his personal and leadership skills, as well as providing an overall climate conducive to engagement. Institutional History and Culture : The President: (a) aligned engagement with the University's history, and (b) helped shape a culture conducive to engagement, while attending to enhancing the University's overall status and credibility internally and externally. Organizational Structure and Policies : The President: (a) influenced the structure and composition of senior administrative staff involved in grand-scale engagement projects; (b) encouraged student and faculty involvement through existing structures; and (b) urged and relied on the provost to address structural impediments to engagement for faculty. This study revealed that when promoting community engagement, a private university president is perceived to act differently from a public university president due to the University's voluntary choice to engage and the roadblocks and facilitators to engagement. This action research study yielded recommendations for future practice to enhance the University's overall engagement with the community. Recommendations are provided for future research on the University of Hartford's engagement in particular and the role of presidents in promoting higher education's community engagement in general.

Book Legitimacy in the Academic Presidency

Download or read book Legitimacy in the Academic Presidency written by Rita Bornstein and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the 1990s and early 21st century impact the evolution of the college presidency? The legitimacy and performance of higher education were called into question during this period, and respect for some of its leaders declined. An economic downturn and the concomitant change of student enrollment patterns have required presidents to lead in compromised conditions. The new emphasis on financial management and fund raising has opened the job of academic president to those with nontraditional backgrounds. These new presidents must gain legitimacy differently from those of more traditional backgrounds, who are struggling with their own legitimacy challenges. In order to understand legitimacy, Bornstein has spplied theory from the social sciences and higher education literature, proposing five factors that influence presidential legitimacy: Individual, Institutional, Environmental, Technical and Moral. She also proposes six threats to legitimacy: Lack of Cultural Fit, Management Incompetence, Misconduct, Erosion of Social Capital, Inattentiveness, and Gradiosity. In light of these threats, she suggests strategies for gaining and maintaining legitimacy. This book focuses on the impetus for leading change. Bornstein draws on numberouns sources for a theoretical perspective on the factors associated witht he president's role in creating legitimate change. She proposes a construct of four factors to implement legitimate change: Presidential Leadership, Governance, Social Capital, and Fund Raising. The concepts of transformational and transactional leadership are examined for their ability to facilitatle change. Bornstein finds their effectiveness limited and proposes "transformative leadership", a contextual approach that fits between transformational and transactional leadership in the conceptual continuum. Since presidents are often recruited on the basis of their academic experience, their legitimacy depends on securing resources to strengthen or transform their institution; fund raising is essential. Book Presidencies Derailed

Download or read book Presidencies Derailed written by Stephen Joel Trachtenberg and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University presidents have become as expendable as football coaches--one bad season, scandal, or political or financial misstep and they are sent packing. A derailed presidency can undermine an institution's image, damage its alumni relations, and destroy campus morale, but it can also cost millions of dollars. During 2009 and 2010, fifty college, university, and system presidents either resigned, retired prematurely, or were fired. These high-profile campus appointments are increasingly scrutinized by faculty, administrators, alumni, and the media, and problems emerge all too publicly. A combination of constrained resources and a trend toward hiring from outside of academia results in tensions between governing boards and presidents that can quickly erupt. Sometimes presidents are dismissed for performance, financial, or institutional "fit" reasons, but there are nearly always political reasons as well. The details of these employment situations, often masked by confidentially clauses, increasingly emerge as social networks and traditional media buzz with speculation. Former university president Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, along with Gerald B. Kauvar and former chancellor E. Grady Bogue, examine what can go wrong--and indeed has--and who in academic institutions has the responsibility to address these issues before things get out of hand. Presidencies Derailed is the first book to explore in depth, from every sector of higher education, the reasons why university presidencies fail and how university and college leadership can prevent these unfortunate situations from happening. Authors: Stephen Joel Trachtenberg was a long-serving president of George Washington University and the former president of the University of Hartford. Gerald B. Kauvar is research professor of public policy and public administration and special assistant to the president emeritus at George Washington University. E. Grady Bogue was chancellor of Louisiana State University in Shreveport. Currently he is interim chancellor of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Publisher's note.

Book Presidents as Transformational Or Transactional Leaders in Higher Education

Download or read book Presidents as Transformational Or Transactional Leaders in Higher Education written by Lloyd Moman Basham and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose of Study: The purpose of the study was primarily concerned with exploring the major issues that are confronting presidents of higher education and if transformational or transactional leadership practices and concepts are warranted in addressing their issues. Procedure: A Delphi technique was used with a broad-based panel of 52 experts who were college or university presidents in the United States. The expert panel provided input to 41 distinct indicators that included a list of concerns, issues, management practices and concepts, and effective leadership qualities. These indicators were force rated through three rounds to determine levels of agreement and consensus determined from medians and interquartile ranges for each indicator. Findings: Final ratings resulted in 25 (61%) of the indicators receiving a median rating of 6 or less, indicating that the panelists agreed or strongly agreed the indicator was applicable, and 23 indicators (56%) reached a level of statistical consensus with an IQR of 2 or less. Conclusions: The researcher reached 10 conclusions from the analyzing the findings. They were 1) the distinction between transactional and transformation leadership practices and concepts in higher education may not be as clear as traditionally believed; 2) university presidents recognize the critical need for a vision and purpose with values; 3) university presidents recognize that establishing an environment of excellence inspires trust; 4) university presidents' major challenge in introducing change is the traditional and historical structures of culture; 5) both transactional and transformational leadership practices will have to be applied to ensure change due to the reluctance of tenured faculty and staff to consider changes due to personal impact; 6) the situation and environment of reduction in state and/or government funding will require critical application of transactional and transformational leadership practices and concepts; 7) president must have the individual quality of commitment; 8) a university president's competency in knowledge, leadership skills, and technical expertise is necessary; and 9) the attribute of authenticity must reside within the university president's acumen.

Book Characteristics of Effective Leadership of Community College Presidents

Download or read book Characteristics of Effective Leadership of Community College Presidents written by Manoj Babu and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance measures facing Community College Presidents (CCP) in the United States is reaching a level of scrutiny that is unprecedented. The social needs of the community, in an effort to create a true learning environment, become dependent on the effectiveness of CCP. Community Colleges play a vital role in the upward mobility and social access to higher education in the U.S. while the upcoming changes in the educational system reveal a new set of skills that is mandatory for a successful presidential tenure. The presidents of these educational post-secondary institutions are becoming more aware of their leadership roles and expectations from groups such as students, community, and their respective board of trustees. This study delves into the core leadership competencies that lay the foundation and groundwork for a successful CCP. The key findings of this research include essential areas of leadership effectiveness such as emotional and social intelligence, shared vision, and community engagement. Ultimately, this research attempts to answer the question: "What does it take to become an effective community college president?" This research also provides a compelling argument into the emotional and social leadership skills set needed to be successful as a CCP using comparative analysis, statistical evidence, and a multi-rater system of analysis. The major theme categories, as found by this research, needed to be an effective CCP are emotional intelligence, sense of purpose, social intelligence, involving external stakeholders, and cognitive intelligence. It is the intent of this research to identify competency markers as indicators for an effective CCP. In an attempt to identify core competencies relevant to the success of CCPs, this research focuses on three completed studies, each one building on the next in succession. The first study is a qualitative approach using critical incident behavior analysis during formal interviews with CCPs. The second is a quantitative approach to the insights and expectations of community college faculty. Finally, the third study is a quantitative focus on the competencies of effectiveness and engagement of CCPs. In addition, the third study is a multi-rater design analysis with a 360 feedback survey from direct reports of the presidents of community colleges. These three studies create a mixed-method network of evidence and logic formulated to lay a foundation for CCPs. Ideally, the information compiled from this research can be used by current and future community college administration. The competencies that once led to a successful CCP tenure have changed and have been replaced with new expectations from the community college board of directors, students, and communities. This research outlines what is required to have a successful tenure as a CCP in today's post-secondary education system.

Book The Outstanding Community College President

Download or read book The Outstanding Community College President written by Stanley Olin Vittetoe and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover how outstanding community college presidents conceptualize their leadership practices and behaviors and what experiences they believe have prepared them for the presidency. It also sought to learn how their strategic constituencies evaluated the presidents. Purposeful sampling was used to select four community college presidents from a group of presidents identified as outstanding using a peer nomination process in a previous study by C.H. McFarlin (1997). Personal interviews were conducted with each president and representatives of their critical constituencies: faculty, administrators, and the governing board. In addition, at each institution, the president's administrative assistant, a student leader, and a community leader were also interviewed. The research was supplemented with analysis of relevant documents and with a visit to each institution. The data were collected in the fall of 2000 and the spring of 2001 at community colleges in the Midwest region of the United States. Results showed that presidents use a variety of implicit leadership theory to inform their leadership behavior. Presidents described leadership theories that fit the leadership context of their college. Presidents were evaluated positively by their constituencies. Internal constituencies tended to evaluate the presidents based on the extent to which they perceived that authority and governance were shared. External constituencies tended to evaluate the presidents based on their service to the community, especially economic and workforce development. Results of this study reinforced this idea that culture is critical to an understanding of leadership.
