Download or read book The Offshoring Challenge written by Torben Pedersen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuous search for efficiency gains and the goal of attaining a sustainable competitive advantage have steadily increased the volume of goods and services procured globally from third party vendors. In this context, named as “the next wave of globalization”, the offshoring phenomenon has stimulated research and political debates. With the rise of services offshoring, international value chain disaggregation for services has reached a formerly unknown scale. Also, it is increasingly complex transactions, requiring a higher degree of qualification, which are becoming subject to offshoring as well. The Offshoring Challenge: Strategic Design and Innovation for Tomorrow’s Organization features selected chapters by an international research community on the topic of offshoring. All potential business models from offshore outsourcing to third party providers are covered, from cooperative arrangements to internal organizational set-ups including captive offshore centers. Contributions have significant insights regarding: the increasing offshoring of knowledge-intensive services; the offshoring process; business models incorporating offshoring; the hidden costs of offshoring; and the administration of offshoring activities within firms The book is aimed at a broad audience of scholars, students and practitioners in the fields of strategy, international business and operations management.

Book Electronic Supply Chain Collaboration for Small Job Shop Manufacturers

Download or read book Electronic Supply Chain Collaboration for Small Job Shop Manufacturers written by Thomas Magnuson Coe and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven to improve their competitive advantages, manufacturers are looking to electronic supply chain collaboration (ESCC). The benefits of ESCC have long been described in the literature, but only recently, after considerable advances in the capability of information technology, have these benefits been verified by empirical studies. The high cost of ESCC has limited its early application to larger companies. Although interest in ESCC is high in business and information systems circles, the large group of small manufacturers has received meager attention. Theory suggests, however, that ESCC benefits are maximized as more supply chain partners integrate their information systems into a supply chain network. This exploratory triangulation study considered the current state and future implications of ESCC for the small job shop manufacturer. Three lines of research addressed the problem in terms of the SJSM business environment, ESCC technology, and success cases studies. The study found that ESCC integration is proceeding slowly, impeded primarily by a lack of standards for data integration. Advances in the Internet and related technology have, however, eliminated all but the last few barriers to ESCC. The remaining barriers are likely to fall pending acceptance of new ESCC standards such as RosettaNet. ESCC is already well established in select industries and will accelerate into other industries as standards develop. Currently, most ESCC activity is between top- and mid-tier manufacturers, but this activity will eventually spread down to third-tier small manufacturers. The study found no evidence that true integration, or the exchange of data between trading partners without retyping, is currently practical for most SJSMs. The study did find that low-integration ESCC is currently practical for SJSMs. In low-integration ESCC, manufacturers use Web portals to remotely access their trading partners' information systems. Low-integration ESCC can be implemented at low cost and offers advantages such as positive return on investment, competitive advantage, and a head start toward advanced ESCC. At the time of the study, only a few SJSMs had attempted even low-integration ESCC. SJSMs have, however, widely adopted the Internet for static Web sites, for email, and for exchanging electronic documents, including CAD drawings. Although neither haste nor large investment are called for, the study recommends that SJSMs take measured steps toward truly integrated ESCC and concludes that skills in ESCC will be necessary for SJSMs to protect their competitive advantages within the next four to eight years.

Book Supply Chain Management Along the Product Life Cycle

Download or read book Supply Chain Management Along the Product Life Cycle written by Román Peláez Pérez and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of short life cycle products in the industry is increasing. This proliferation is mainly due to fast-changing consumer preferences, rapid rate of innovation and its effects on technology information, and tight and global market competition. The supply chain for this kind of products has to be responsive and flexible if it wants to keep the pace of the dynamic and volatile market. An exploratory research was performed in order to identify potential challenges and courses of action that companies have taken, and experts, based on their works, recommend, in order to successfully manage the supply chain of this short life cycle products. This study was narrow to the first stages of the product, the time where the production ramp-up occurs. Nowadays a myriad of short life cycle products are scattered in various industries, that is why this research focused on products belonging solely to the high-tech industry. The product life cycle theory was used to identify the challenges faced in the design, introduction and growth stage. Stages in which the production ramp-up occur. The supply chain management was divided into three categories: demand management, manufacturing, and logistics. Four major findings were identified. First, one solution will not fit every single case. Moreover, not all the challenges discussed may affect the companies in the same way. Second, with the resources and pool of knowledge available in the market, companies of various backgrounds can successfully manage the ramp-up. Third, the decisions taken at the beginning of the life cycle have to be done cautiously. The examples presented in the study show how the decisions made at the beginning stages can be crucial and define to a certain extent the development of the product in its market. Fourth, different trade-offs were identified; they provide insights to take decisions in this matter.

Book Competition in Upstream Humanitarian Supply Chain

Download or read book Competition in Upstream Humanitarian Supply Chain written by Iana Shaheen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global hunger is not about a shortage of food. Currently, the world generates enough food to sustain every man, woman, and child on the planet. However, in 2018, about 815 million people, or almost 11% of the population, were hungry worldwide (World Hunger Report, 2018). To respond to the problems in ways more adapted to the requirements of people in need, humanitarian organizations (HOs) are dedicated to becoming more effective and efficient (Weiss, 2013). With the boost in the number of people that require humanitarian assistance, the number of HOs is increasing each year. As a result, there is unanimity among academics, policy planners, and practitioners that HOs operate in an increasingly competitive environment (Heyes and Martin, 2017; Aldashev & Verdier, 2010; Tuckman, 1998). Much of what we know about nonprofit competition is based on studies of commercial nonprofits (Topaloglu et al., 2018; Ly & Mason, 2012; Tuckman, 1998; Hansmann, 1980). Commercial nonprofits resemble for-profit firms and substantially depend on operational performance to achieve their goals (e.g., credit unions, universities). In contrast, HOs are donative nonprofits that largely depend on donations to survive (e.g., food banks, medical relief organizations). Those involved in humanitarian assistance are influenced by factors different from those in commercial nonprofits. Similar to for-profits, commercial nonprofits are involved in a market-based, downstream competition for customers; whereas the humanitarian aid sector does not behave like a free market, and humanitarians are faced with upstream competition for donors and resources (Schwenger et al., 2014). Instead of revenue generation, the objective in humanitarian organizations is to diminish social suffering by saving lives, preserving property, and improving the social and economic foundations of communities (Van Wassenhove, 2006). In this dissertation, I investigate nonprofit competition as a driver of humanitarian organizations' performance. I rely on resource-advantage theory (Hunt, 2000) to offer a theoretical framework to differentiate how parties view competition in humanitarian supply chains (SCs). To address the research question, this dissertation adopts a mixed methods research design with the data collected in two studies. By adopting the mixed methods design, I combine qualitative and quantitative research approaches to expand and strengthen the dissertation's results through the triangulation of multiple methods and sources of information (Davis & Golicic, 2012; Sanders & Wagner, 2011; Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2010). Following the developmental mixed methods research design, the dissertation is conducted so that the results of the first study guide the development of the second study (Davis & Golicic, 2012; Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2010). I employ a grounded theory analysis to data collected through a multiple case study (Yin, 2010). Since the study of competition in the humanitarian supply chain context represents a relatively unexplored area, an exploratory multiple case study methodological approach offers more comprehensive insights on the competition phenomenon (Golicic & Davis, 2012). Following the developmental mixed methods research design procedures, Study II conceptualizes and empirically tests hypotheses developed based on the results of the qualitative phase (Essay I). Overall, the purpose of the mixed methods research design is development, so that the findings from the multiple case study (Essay I) inform the subsequent empirical assessment of proposed relationships (Essay II) (Davis & Golicic, 2012; Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2010). As Akhtar (2018) notes, case study research coupled with analytical methods can be a "heavenly combination" to address humanitarian challenges.

Book Competing on Supply Chain Quality

Download or read book Competing on Supply Chain Quality written by Anna Nagurney and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book lays the foundations for quality modeling and analysis in the context of supply chains through a synthesis of the economics, operations management, as well as operations research/management science literature on quality. The reality of today's supply chain networks, given their global reach from sourcing locations to points of demand, is further challenged by such issues as the growth in outsourcing as well as the information asymmetry associated with what producers know about the quality of their products and what consumers know. Although much of the related literature has focused on the micro aspects of supply chain networks, considering two or three decision-makers, it is essential to capture the scale of supply chain networks in a holistic manner that occurs in practice in order to be able to evaluate and analyze the competition and the impacts on supply chain quality in a quantifiable manner. This volume provides an overview of the fundamental methodologies utilized in this book, including optimization theory, game theory, variational inequality theory, and projected dynamical systems theory. It then focuses on major issues in today's supply chains with respect to quality, beginning with information asymmetry, followed by product differentiation and branding, the outsourcing of production, from components to final products, to quality in freight service provision. The book is filled with numerous real-life examples in order to emphasize the generality and pragmatism of the models and tools. The novelty of the framework lies in a network economics perspective through which the authors identify the underlying network structure of the various supply chains, coupled with the behavior of the decision-makers, ranging from suppliers and manufacturers to freight service providers. What is meant by quality is rigorously defined and quantified. The authors explore the underlying dynamics associated with the competitive processes along with the equilibrium solutions. As appropriate, the supply chain decision-makers compete in terms of quantity and quality, or in price and quality. The relevance of the various models that are developed to specific industrial sectors, including pharmaceuticals and high technology products, is clearly made. Qualitative analyses are provided, along with effective, and, easy to implement, computational procedures. Finally, the impacts of policy interventions, in the form of minimum quality standards, and their ramifications, in terms of product prices, quality levels, as well as profits are explored. The book is filled with many network figures, graphs, and tables with data.

Book Motivating SMEs to Cooperate and Internationalize

Download or read book Motivating SMEs to Cooperate and Internationalize written by George Tesar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in generally expanding the understanding of small and medium-sized enterprises, especially understanding their strategies and operations to enter international markets, is growing rapidly among researchers and academics globally. Government officials, regional and economic specialists, and international trade advisers are directly involved in assisting small and medium-sized enterprises in developing their international marketing expertise. Motivating SMEs to Cooperate and Internationalize consists of research studies, cases, and experiences obtained by researchers and academics from managers of small and medium-sized enterprises in Northern Europe as they worked closely with managers on issues and problems leading to internationalization of enterprises. This book will map not only the attempts of small and medium-sized enterprises in Northern Europe to enter foreign markets, but also to understand how researchers and academics can help small and medium-sized Northern European enterprisers achieve their objectives. This compilation of approaches, perspectives, and experiences will serve as a resource tool for researchers and academics active in international management training programs worldwide and help illustrate how to close the gap between publishing results of their findings and efforts to disseminate their findings among managers of small and medium-sized enterprises in their domains. This book is the first attempt to integrate results of research studies and practices as an illustration of how knowledge of small and medium-sized enterprises has evolved since the 1980s with the contributions of individual researchers and academics in Northern Europe. It will be of relevance to academics and researchers interested in working closely with small and medium-sized enterprises to meet their goals in entering international markets.
