Book excerpt: Like a strong foundation in a house, the climate of a school is the foundation that supports the structures of teaching and learning. This book provides a framework for educators to look at school and classroom climates using both informal and formal measures. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of climate and details techniques which may be used by heads or classroom teachers to judge the health of their learning environment. The book sets out to enhance understanding of the components of a healthy learning environment and the tools needed to improve that environment. It also looks at ways to assess the impact of change activities in improving and sustaining educational excellence. The international team of contributors bring perspectives from the school systems in America, UK, Australia and Holland.

Book An Exploratory Case Study of Supporting Elementary Pre service Teachers Social and Emotional Learning

Download or read book An Exploratory Case Study of Supporting Elementary Pre service Teachers Social and Emotional Learning written by Latifa Mousa and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and Emotional Learning has gradually become a central theme in education all over the world. There is growing literature that tackles the social and emotional learning of learners across grade levels and beyond, in addition to the surrounding factors such as the role families and after-school programs play, yet there is a predominant focus on the role schools and universities play in the lives of learners. However, there is a dire need for examining the social and emotional learning of teachers in general and of pre-service teachers in particular. Not just the social and emotional learning competencies that enable them to transfer those skills to learners, but rather pre-service teachers' personal social and emotional learning, as you cannot pour from an empty cup. To this end, this study aims to explore the perceptions of a student teacher, a cooperating teacher, and a university supervisor with regard to social and emotional learning, and how the relationships among the three participants mediate the development the student teacher's social and emotional learning. First, I establish what social and emotional learning means and situate it in the literature. Then, I delineate the study design and analysis process. After that, I present the data findings, and finally, I discuss the contributions of the study to the field and prospects of future research.

Book An Exploratory Study of School Climate and Student Behavior in Thirteen Delaware Public Elementary Schools

Download or read book An Exploratory Study of School Climate and Student Behavior in Thirteen Delaware Public Elementary Schools written by Jane N. Case and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examines indicators in 13 public elementary schools throughout the state of Delaware by using a mixed methods exploratory research design, in an effort to understand the dynamic relationship between school climate and the social, behavioral, and intellectual outcomes of 5 th grade students. Research indicators are consistently categorized and discussed in terms of the study's 4 dependent variables: student safety, student risk behavior, general school characteristics, and academic performance; and the study's 2 independent variables: dimensions of school climate and approaches to discipline. Findings suggest that within the sample population, more favorable school climate schools had low student to teacher ratios, favorable school climates as perceived by students, favorable student perceptions of peer relationships, and more favorable rates of student perceptions of school rule fairness and school safety. Statistically significant, direct correlations were observed between student responses to the statement "I feel safe in my school" and perceptions of rule fairness, students' liking of school, and student relationships. Further, unexpected positive correlations between gambling and student relations as well as between gambling and teacher/staff perceptions of school climate were observed. Positive, statistically significant correlations were observed between teacher education levels and students' perceptions of school climate, students' reports of liking school, students' perceptions of school safety, students' perceptions of student-teacher-home relations, teachers'/school staffs' perceptions of school climate, and homes' perceptions of school climate. The need to reveal the intricacies of establishing a constructive school climate and nurturing positive student outcomes remains. Once specifications of this interaction are better understood, policy initiatives can be enacted to better develop healthy environments in all schools. The greatest contributions of the study include a refined approach to understanding relationships between school climate and student outcomes, as well as to highlight the need for better approaches to collecting school climate data.

Book The IOS Study of Elementary School Teachers Perceptions of Their Classroom Relationships

Download or read book The IOS Study of Elementary School Teachers Perceptions of Their Classroom Relationships written by Melissa Ann Newberry and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Personal relationships between the teacher and student have been shown to influence many things from cognitive development to academic achievement to the social intelligence of the child. Teachers too, have psychological and social needs that they unconsciously seek to satisfy through the relationships in the classroom. This fulfillment comes as they interact and create relationships with select students in the classroom. Through this study it was found that the combination of personal constructs of close relationships based on what teachers value in the classroom and teacher preferences to student attitudes and behaviors influenced the way that teachers treat various groups of students. It was also revealed that without a method or opportunity for reflection, in many instances teachers are unaware of their affective role and its influence on the student. A protocol designed to facilitate the discussion of classroom relationships and encourage teachers to reflect on their classroom interactions proved useful and is offered as a tool for use in classrooms and future teacher preparation programs.

Book An Exploratory Study of Academic Optimism and Flow of Elementary School Teachers

Download or read book An Exploratory Study of Academic Optimism and Flow of Elementary School Teachers written by Karen Lee Stansberry Beard and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The goal of this research was to examine individual teachers' beliefs about their experiences, abilities, students, and academic tasks through two concepts evolving out of positive psychology - flow and academic optimism. Researchers have theorized and found correlational support for the idea that flow is an optimal psychological state underlying peak performance. This study examined two competing models of flow. Jackson (1998) defined flow as a holistic, subjective experience encompassing all nine of Csikszentmihalyi's original elements. Quinn (2006) conceived of flow as a causal model, with antecedents and consequences defining flow as the merging of awareness and application. The results from CFA and SEM of 260 elementary school teachers, demonstrated that Jackson's model provided a better explanation of flow for teachers. For teachers, flow is a holistic and integrated concept with nine aspects. Hoy and colleagues (2006) theorized that collective teacher efficacy, faculty-trust in students and parents, and academic emphasis are dimensions of a single latent trait of schools called academic optimism. The (Hoy, et. al., 2007) model of individual academic optimism was well supported. Teacher academic optimism is a second-order factor comprised of three first order factors: sense of teacher efficacy, teacher trust in parents and students and individual teacher academic emphasis. In this analysis, the measures of individual academic optimism were refined. The construct of general life optimism describes an individuals positive expectation about the future. Enabling structure describes the extent to which the structure of a school supports teachers' work. The correlational results yielded that a teacher sense of flow and academic optimism were positively related. General life optimism was positively correlated with academic optimism. Enabling school structure was positively correlated with academic optimism but the relation with flow was not supported. Finally, the results from exploratory analysis of multiple predictors for teacher sense of academic optimism showed that general life optimism, flow and teacher perception of enabling school structure all made significant contribution to the explanation of teacher's sense of academic optimism, while academic optimism and general life optimism made significant contributions to the explanation of teacher's sense of flow.
