Book excerpt: It is well documented that attrition in the postsecondary settings for students who are deaf or hard of hearing is greatly due to their academic and communication skills, as well as pre-entry attributes. However there is little evidence that indicates why students who are deaf or hard of hearing are successful in the postsecondary setting. This study tested a hypothesis that demographic, family, psychological and educational variables have a relationship with postsecondary attainment. The variables included in the study were gender, race, math literacy, reading literacy, high school academic setting (public/residential), communication modality (sign language/oral speech), cochlear implant user, parental academic expectation, parental educational attainment, self-determination, self-concept, self-advocacy, and friendship interaction. This study analyzed a sample of students utilizing existing data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2 (NLTS2). The findings from this study supported the hypothesis that demographic, family, psychological and educational variables highly influence postsecondary completion. The only exception was no significant relationship was found between cochlear implant use and high school academic placement with postsecondary attainment. Findings from this study will help professionals to bridge the gap from research to practice. Results will directly impact how programs approach career planning and advising. Finally, the knowledge from this study will directly impact career planning and career advising as well as inform program development for retention of deaf or hard of hearing students in persistence to graduation.

Data were collected from 982 of the nation's 2-year and 4-year postsecondary institutions (Gallaudet University and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf were not included) and were weighted to provide national estimates. Highlights of findings include: (1) about half of the nation's 5,000 postsecondary institutions enrolled one or more students who identified themselves as deaf or hard of hearing in the last 4 years; (2) public institutions were much more likely than private institutions to enroll such students (79 percent versus 29 percent); (3) a total of 20,040 deaf or hard of hearing students were identified (an increase of approximately 3,000 students since 1989); (4) about a third of the institutions provided special support services to a total of 16,100 students; (5) classroom notetakers, sign language interpreters, and assistive listening devices were the major support services provided. This report provides detailed analysis in narrative, tables, and figures on: enrollment in postsecondary institutions, provision of support services, types of support services provided, problems with providing support services, and information that institutions would find useful in providing services. Additional information details the survey methodology and data reliability. Two appendices provide tables of standard errors and the survey questionnaire. Contains 12 references. (DB)

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to examine the support strategies and mechanisms that led to academic and personal success for deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Historically, deaf or hard of hearing students have struggled to meet their personal or academic goals within postsecondary educational institutions. For example, individuals who have a hearing loss represent only 4.8% of the California community college campus student population. This study describes how deaf or hard of hearing individuals utilized effective support strategies to assist them with meeting their personal and/or academic life goals. It is important to understand the conceptual framework as it specifically relates to goal attainment for individuals with hearing loss in order to ensure that higher education institutions are providing the support needed to assist these individuals with meeting their personal, professional, and academic goals. This study utilizes the social capital theory as the framework to better understand those influences that led to personal or academic success for deaf or hard of hearing individuals who participated in this research. A grounded theory method of inquiry was conducted to analyze the data for this study. This research approach was selected to investigate learning outcomes for deaf or hard of hearing individuals who obtained gainful employment, completed a workforce training program, or a degree in higher education. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals who are either deaf or hard of hearing who had attained personal or academic success as defined by the study criteria. Specifically, participants were purposefully selected based on being prelingually deaf or hard of hearing. Consideration was given to the following characteristics in an effort to obtain maximum variation in the study: race; ethnicity; gender; age; and communication modalities. Additional criteria for participation in the study included having either a unilateral/bilateral severe to profound hearing loss or a unilateral/bilateral moderate hearing loss, and the use of a primary communication modality which involved American Sign Language or another signed system, or the use of spoken English. Twelve themes emerged as a result of the data analysis, with 10 of these seen as significant factors that led to the participants reaching goal attainment. Based on the findings, recommendations for practices and program development were made for institutions of higher learning, and primary and secondary educational settings, to assist deaf or hard of hearing individuals with the attainment of communication access, and personal and academic success.

Book excerpt: In light of the disproportionately small numbers of low-income students who obtain postsecondary degrees, the current study investigated the relationships between various characteristics of disadvantaged students and the level of K--12 academic success that positioned them for postsecondary degree completion. After examining the literature related to academic resilience, the author found inconsistent identification of low-income students and low-level benchmarks for academic success. The lack of consistency in identifying low-income and academically successful students undermined the generalizability of the findings to students prepared for postsecondary education.

Book excerpt: Research suggests that the academic achievement of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students is the result of a complex interplay of many factors. These factors include characteristics of the students (e.g., hearing thresholds, language fluencies, mode of communication, and communication functioning), characteristics of their family environments (e.g., parent education level, socioeconomic status), and experiences inside and outside school (e.g., school placement, having been retained at grade level). This paper examines the relative importance of such characteristics to U.S. DHH secondary students' academic achievement as indicated by the Woodcock-Johnson III subtests in passage comprehension, mathematics calculation, science, and social studies. Data were obtained for approximately 500 DHH secondary students who had attended regular secondary schools or state-sponsored special schools designed for DHH students. Across all subject areas, having attended regular secondary schools and having better spoken language were associated with higher test scores. Significant negative predictors of achievement varied by type of subtest but included having an additional diagnosis of a learning disability, having a mild hearing loss, and being African American or Hispanic. The findings have important implications for policy and practice in educating DHH students as well for interpreting previous research.

Book excerpt: Students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing represent a special population of students with unique accommodation needs (Cawthon & Online Research Lab, 2008). The goal of these accommodations, whether utilized during classroom instruction or assessment, is to ensure students have access to academic material and are able to demonstrate their skills on knowledge assessments. These students have historically had less access to higher education and in the last few decades research has examined their low rates of retention in postsecondary institutions (Lang, 2002). Previous research has examined a variety of social and academic factors in relation to retention of deaf or hard-of-hearing students (Albertini, Kelly, & Matchett, 2011). However, this research is often limited to few sites and time windows, rather than examining the longitudinal nature of retention. This dissertation proposed to utilize the deaf or hard-of-hearing sample in the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) to examine the extent of the relationship between students' experiences of accommodations in their postsecondary setting and their retention in that setting. Particular aspects of this experience included student evaluations of their accommodations' utility and whether they received sufficient accommodations. Analysis included two logistic regression where responses to questions regarding accommodations, controlling for previous school performance, socioeconomic status, and co-occurring disabilities, were used to predict college retention. Analysis also addressed whether the student's communication modality moderates the relationship between students' evaluations of accommodations utility and sufficiency and college retention.

Gaps in knowledge of evidence-based practices for implementing transition education and services for this population is limited, primarily as a function of the size of the population; they have not received much attention from the educational research community. Students with hearing impairments often experience more successful outcomes in postsecondary education and employment than other disability groups, but less than those without a disability; however, we know little of the specific educational experiences associated with such success. In contrast, a body of work on predictors of post-school success for students with disabilities in general has emerged in the field of special education. This study will use information from that work to develop a set of secondary education predictor variables. Subsequently, using data from a national longitudinal transition study, these variables will be tested via a number of models which strongly predict postsecondary education and employment outcomes for students with hearing impairments. This study has the potential to expand the limited research in the field of transition education for students with hearing impairments. It should lead to additional research to further expand knowledge regarding challenges that students with hearing impairments face in high school. Finally, this study should impact our field by bringing attention to programs and provision of special and regular education services that definitively benefit students with hearing impairments, as opposed to interventions in settings that do not meet their needs.
