Book An Exploration of the Factors Associated with the Attitudes of High School EFL Teachers in Syria Toward Information and Communication Technology

Download or read book An Exploration of the Factors Associated with the Attitudes of High School EFL Teachers in Syria Toward Information and Communication Technology written by Abdulkafi Albirini and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The global adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) has been the landmark of the educational scene for the last two decades. A main feature of most technology initiatives worldwide is their focus on the technology itself and their inattentiveness to the human factor involved in the implementation process. The overall purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of EFL teachers in Syrian high schools toward ICT in education and to explore the relationship of teachers' attitudes with a selected set of variables. These variables included computer attributes, cultural perceptions, computer competence, computer access, and demographic variables (including computer training background). Teachers' attitudes were examined from two related theoretical frameworks: Rogers's (1995) Diffusion of Innovations and Ajzen and Fishbein's (1980) Model of Reasoned Action. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to collect data on the population of EFL teachers in the city of Hims during the 2003-2004 school year (N=887). A questionnaire was developed and distributed to 326 sample teachers selected randomly from the population. The survey stage was followed by in-depth phone interviews with a purposeful sample of 15 teachers. Results from both quantitative and qualitative data indicated that the participants had positive attitudes toward ICT in education. While the participants had somewhat positive perceptions of the attributes of computers, they were relatively neutral about the cultural relevance of ICT to Syrian society and schools. The teachers also reported low levels of computer competence, access, and training. Significant positive correlations existed between teachers' attitudes toward ICT and five independent variables, including computer attributes, cultural perceptions, computer competence, computer access, and computer training. Multiple regression analysis indicated that only the first three of the above independent variables had a significant predictive value of computer attitudes toward ICT. The results indicated that 0.58% of the variance in computer attitude was explained by the independent variables included in this study. Based on the findings, it was recommended that policy-makers sustain teachers' positive attitudes toward ICT, offer them more training opportunities, and take steps to alleviate the concerns of some teachers about the culturally improper material on the web.

Book Critical CALL Proceedings of the 2015 EUROCALL Conference Padova Italy

Download or read book Critical CALL Proceedings of the 2015 EUROCALL Conference Padova Italy written by Francesca Helm and published by Research-publishing.net. This book was released on 2015-12-02 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of the conference this year was Critical CALL, drawing inspiration from the work carried out in the broader field of Critical Applied Linguistics. The term ‘critical’ has many possible interpretations, and as Pennycook (2001) outlines, has many concerns. It was from these that we decided on the conference theme, in particular the notion that we should question the assumptions that lie at the basis of our praxis, ideas that have become ‘naturalized’ and are not called into question. Over 200 presentations were delivered in 68 different sessions, both in English and Italian, on topics related specifically to the theme and also more general CALL topics. 94 of these were submitted as extended papers and appear in this volume of proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, due to factors of ICT infrastructural and broadband maturation, rising levels of educational attainment and computer literacy, and diversification strategies, e-learning has exploded in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. However, significant barriers remain in the region’s e-learning development: lack of research on outcomes and effectiveness, paucity of Arabic language learning objects, monopolies and high cost of telecommunications, cultural taboos, accreditation, censorship, and teacher training. This unique volume is the first comprehensive effort to describe the history, development, and current state of e-learning in each of the 20 MENA countries from Algeria to Yemen. Each entry is expertly written by a specialist who is acutely familiar with the state of e-learning in their respective country, and concludes with a bibliography of key reports, peer-reviewed books and articles, and web resources. E-Learning in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) proves itself as a vital compendium for a wide readership that includes academics and students, transnational program directors, international education experts, MENA government departments, commercial vendors and investors, and ICT development and regulatory agencies involved in e-learning in the Middle East.

Book Exploring Attitudes of Teachers and Students to the Integration of Technology in EFL Classrooms

Download or read book Exploring Attitudes of Teachers and Students to the Integration of Technology in EFL Classrooms written by Abdallah Tanfouri and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Much available research stresses the role positive teachers' and students' attitudes play in the success of technology integration. A large body of research has been conducted in the region to investigate the attitudes of teachers and students to the integration of technology in the EFL classroom. However, most researchers are university teachers who are not familiar with the environment they are studying. Most researchers concluded that the majority of students and teachers hold positive attitudes to using computers in the classroom. Many of them reported the gap between what teachers say and what they actually. This study may be one of those few studies, if any, conducted by a high school teacher to study teachers' and students' attitudes to technology integration"--Abstract.

Book Factors Correlating with Teachers Use of Computers in the Classroom

Download or read book Factors Correlating with Teachers Use of Computers in the Classroom written by Samia A. Wahab and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-11-11 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need to understand the factors correlating with teachers' instructional use of computers, because much of the present research focuses on students rather than teachers. This study examines several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined include teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and outside influences. This was done by a review of the present literature, administering two surveys, and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected high schools in a Midwest city participating in the study. Data from the survey was then examined to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. The results of this study will help improve understanding of teachers' instructional computer use.

Book The Impact of a Curricular Innovation on Prospective EFL Teachers Attitudes Towards ICT Integration Into Language Instruction

Download or read book The Impact of a Curricular Innovation on Prospective EFL Teachers Attitudes Towards ICT Integration Into Language Instruction written by Murat Hismanoglu and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates whether the new EFL teacher training curriculum provides an efficient ICT training or not through both a quantitative and a partially qualitative research methodology. One hundred twenty-four prospective EFL teachers participated in this study and the results of a series of Independent Samples T-tests highlight that the prospective teachers having five ICT-related courses displayed better attitudes in comparison to those not completing this training period by reflecting that the success of technology integration into education varies from curriculum to curriculum, depending on the ways in which it is applied. In this study, parametric analysis such as Independent samples t-Test was utilized to explore any statistically significant differences between prospective EFL teachers' ICT attitudes before and after ICT-interwoven training. Moreover, the qualitative information was analyzed from the transcriptions of the interviews, and synthesized with the results from the quantitative study. A questionnaire made up of nine items and an interview consisting of nine questions were employed as data collection tools. (Contains 4 tables.).

Book Pedagogy and ICT Use in Schools around the World

Download or read book Pedagogy and ICT Use in Schools around the World written by Nancy Law and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is information and communication technology (ICT) changing teaching and learning practices in secondary schools worldwide in the 21st century? This is the central question addressed by researchers involved in the series of surveys comprising the Second Information Technology in EducationStudy (SITES ). The question is a multifaceted one, with each facet raising additionalq uestions relating to both theory and practice. These include the following: • What traditional and new pedagogiesare evident in the 21st century? • What is the role of ICT in the teaching and learning process? • What ICT infrastructure is available in schools? • How can teachers and their administrators be prepared for effective practice? • How have these conditions and considerations changed since the first SITES survey in 1998? • What are the trends within and between national education systems? • What do the differences and similarities between these systems suggest? • How shouldchange be promoted in education in order to support teachers in their work? • Is there evidence that key strategic factors commonly found in ICT related educational policies do influence teachers’ pedagogical use of ICT? Because these questions are interconnected, the SITES 2006 researchers recognized that if we are to make sense of changes in pedagogical practicesas a result of IC T use, then we need to view those practices in terms of the interacting layers in the 22 education systems surveyed.

Book Examining High School ELS Perceptions and Attitudes Toward Adopting Technology to Nurture English Language Mastery and Proficiency

Download or read book Examining High School ELS Perceptions and Attitudes Toward Adopting Technology to Nurture English Language Mastery and Proficiency written by Fahad A M R Ameen and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proportion of ESL/EFL learners across greater Kuwait is skyrocketing. Earlier scholars in the education discipline have applied insights and techniques of corpora technology to advance English learners' learning and writing aptitudes. The research setting for this study is a high school in greater Kuwait. The research setting was a classroom context where the proposed Corpus-Based Program (CBP) curriculum was integrated into the mainstream learning for one term. The research identified 44 subjects who volunteered to enroll and contribute toward this accomplishment. For quantitative analysis, the project utilized a pre-and-post EFL Writing Test to examine the students' mastery of the language and proficiency in writing using a rubric score to analyze individual performance. I administered a Semi-Structured Interview (SSI) during both the pre-and-post the CBP implementation to document the students' performance before and after implementing CBP. Using a Questionnaire on Corpus Use (QOCU), the identification of students' attitudes and perceptions concerning the corpus and whether it was essential in nurturing their mastery and proficiency of the English language was made. The Evaluative Questionnaire (EQ) was developed to investigate the respondents' attitudes and views toward the CBP. The results indicate that students present positive perceptions and attitudes toward corpus use to nurture their competency in English language vocabulary.
