Book Reconsidering Resilience in Education

Download or read book Reconsidering Resilience in Education written by Adeela ahmed Shafi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of resilience and its significance in responding to a rapid and ever-changing globalised world whilst critiquing its ‘buzzword’ status in contemporary times. Drawing on research from a range of educational settings, the book demonstrates that the resilience of individuals and their surrounding systems should not be viewed in isolation and that the interplay between individual resilience, community resilience and resilient societies is complex and symbiotic. On this basis, it illustrates that efforts to promote resilience would benefit from a systems approach capable of coping with this complexity. Using the ideas of agency and the power of self-determinism, a development of Bronfenbrenner's bio-ecological model is presented to illustrate the complexity of their interplay. Existing models of resilience are developed with the book offering the Dynamic Interactive Model of Resilience (DIMoR) as a way to analyse and support resilience which moves beyond a reductionist, descriptive and ‘fashionable’ presentation of resilience.

Book Promoting Academic Resilience in Multicultural America

Download or read book Promoting Academic Resilience in Multicultural America written by Erik E. Morales and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promoting Academic Resilience in Multicultural America combines biographical sketches of resilient students, examples of effective programs designed to encourage resilience, recent research in the field, and their own experiences of resilient academics of color. The book illustrates exactly how academic success occurs within traditionally challenged learning environments. The authors focus most closely on the crucial transition between high school and college. The individuals spotlighted and programs outlined cross racial, gender, socioeconomic, and ethnic lines, and include African American, Hispanic, and white students. In part, the authors conclude that there are specific multidimensional protective factors that work collaboratively to enable the success of these exceptional students. It is the detailed exploration of these phenomena that lie at the heart of this work and that has the potential to help all children excel. Among other uses, this book could be a valuable addition to a college freshmen seminar series, a foundations of education course, a course on multiculturalism in America and/or any course focused on basic educational psychology.

Book Protective Factors and Resilience Among College Students

Download or read book Protective Factors and Resilience Among College Students written by Ebony L. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study's main goal was to examine the impact of internal and external protective factors on resilience among college students. While much of the literature on resilience focuses on children and younger adolescents, there are relatively few studies that examine resilience levels among college students and the adult population in general. Specifically, this study examined the internal protective factors of optimism, self-efficacy, and dimensions of psychological well-being and the ways in which they predict resilience levels among college students. The effects of optimism, self-efficacy, and psychological well-being on college students' resilience levels were also hypothesized to be different between different genders and between different races. Data were collected in the spring and fall at a large southeastern university. A survey design was employed in this study to analyze resilience levels among a sample of college students. Multiple regression techniques were used to analyze the data. The results confirmed the protective effects of self-efficacy, external protective factors, and two dimensions of psychological well-being. Empirical evidence shows that some of the internal protective factors operate differently in explaining resilience among different racial and gender groups. Implications are discussed.

Download or read book BROKEN AND DEFERRED BUT I M HERE AN EXPLORATION OF RESILIENCE AND STUDENT INVOLVEMENT OF NONTRADITIONAL STUDENTS AT A HISTORICALLY BLACK UNIVERSITY written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was an exploration of the relationship of the resilience of nontraditional, African American, commuter undergraduates and their academic and social involvement at a historically Black university. The researcher used the Personal Resiliency Questionnaire (PRQ), and a Student Demographic Questionnaire (SDQ.) The PRQ that contained 75 items and measured seven characteristics linked to resilience. The seven characteristics were (a)?Positive: The World,? (b)?Positive: Yourself,? (c)?Focused,? (d)?Flexible: Thoughts,? (e)?Flexible: Social,? and (e)?Proactive.? The SDQ included ten academic involvement indicators and ten social involvement indicators. The researcher defined nontraditional students as those who had indicated three of the following characteristics: (a) was single or married with children; (b) married; (c) was a commuter student; (d) worked full-time; and (e) would have been 24 years of age or older at the time of graduation. Based on the responses provided by the students that completed the survey the researcher identified which students were classified as nontraditional. The researcher reported that using a computer or word processor to prepare reports or papers, asking an instructor for information related to a course you are taking, using a computer lab or center to improve study or academic skills, and taking detailed notes in class significantly predicted several academic involvement indicators. The researcher further indicated, living in an apartment or dormitory if the university provided on-campus housing, supporting classmates? fundraisers, and visiting the university center significantly predicted several social resiliency indicators. The results of this study contributed to the field of higher education as they informed faculty, student affairs administrators, and other university professionals about the impact of academic and social involvement on the resiliency of nontraditional, African American, commuter, students. Book Exploration of the Effectiveness of a Resilience Curriculum Delivered as a College Course

Download or read book Exploration of the Effectiveness of a Resilience Curriculum Delivered as a College Course written by Policarpio Augustine DeCano and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting college can be one of the most exciting events in the life of a young person as well as one of the most stressful. Despite the availability of campus resources to support students who are experiencing struggles, less than 20% of students utilize campus resources for intervention purposes. To address this need, this study utilized mixed methods to explore the effectiveness of a universal preventive intervention implemented in the form of a college course for credit. Study participants completed pre- and post-test measures of perceived stress, perceived capacity for experiencing resilience, and reported satisfaction with life. Treatment-group participants' responses to questions directed at their perceptions of intervention acceptability and appropriateness were analyzed using a directed content analysis. Preliminary results indicated that treatment-group participants reported significant decreases in perceived stress and significant increases in perceived satisfaction with life compared to reports from a comparison group. There were non-significant differences in perceived capacity to experience resilience between the treatment and comparison groups. Recommendations for modifications and future research directions for implementing the THRIVE Resilience Curriculum as a college course for credit are discussed.

Book Health and Academic Achievement

Download or read book Health and Academic Achievement written by Blandina Bernal-Morales and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotional, physical and social well-being describe human health from birth. Good health goes hand in hand with the ability to handle stress for the future. However, biological factors such as diet, life experiences such as drug abuse, bullying, burnout and social factors such as family and community support at the school stage tend to mold health problems, affecting academic achievements. This book is a compilation of current scientific information about the challenges that students, families and teachers face regarding health and academic achievements. Contributions also relate to how physical activity, psychosocial support and other interventions can be made to understand resilience and vulnerability to school desertion. This book will be of interest to readers from broad professional fields, non-specialist readers, and those involved in education policy.

Book The Resilient Turn

Download or read book The Resilient Turn written by Perah Kessman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative phenomenology was designed to explore with a sample of undergraduate students in psychology-related majors their perceptions of psychological resilience and the factors they believe contributed to it. While previous studies have examined the construct of resilience in childhood and adolescence, relatively little is known about the phenomenon later in the lifespan. Thus, the rationale for the study stems from the researcher's wish to fill this gap in knowledge by studying resilience among emerging adults. It was the researcher's assumption that the knowledge generated from this study would both provide new insights into emerging adult resilience and inform higher education practice. The sample was composed of seven undergraduate students in psychology-related majors who reported a history of trauma as well as a sense of personal thriving. Data was collected primarily through in-depth interviews, and supportive methods of questionnaire and document/artifact review were also utilized. Coding and analysis of data were organized by the research questions, and analysis and interpretation of findings were organized in categories based on the study's conceptual framework. The study revealed that (a) while there are many aspects of emerging adult resilience, it is characterized primarily by the ability to successfully integrate trauma; (b) taking action steps contributed to resilience by targeting the disconnection and disempowerment that can result from trauma; and (c) resilience often both motivates students to pursue a psychology-related education and is an outcome of their engagement in the curriculum as they heal from their own traumatic experiences. Recommendations are offered for practice and policy in higher education and for future research. --Abstract

Book Perceptions of Resilience an Exploration Into the Impact of Perceived and Actual Risk

Download or read book Perceptions of Resilience an Exploration Into the Impact of Perceived and Actual Risk written by Gabrielle Strittmater and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION: Outdoor orientation programs have been identified as helping students develop resilience skills to help them transition from home to college. However, what is not known is how perceived risk and actual risk may impact their resilience skills. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was 1) to identify student perceptions of resilience while experiencing adventure education (AE) and outdoor pursuit (OP) settings, and 2) determine how AE (perceived risk) and OP (actual risk) contribute to participants' perceptions of their own resilience. METHODS: Sixteen first-year college students that were enrolled in an AE and OP orientation program participated in this study. Quantitative data was collected using the Brief Resilience Scale to estimate participants' resilience nightly post AE and OP experiences. A repeated measures analysis of variance (RMANOVA) was used to analyze resilience across time. Qualitative data was collected via interviews and reflections from participants and analyzed through open, axial, and final coding to develop a thematic structure. RESULTS: The RMANOVA approached but was not significant (p=0.13). Qualitative themes are as follows: (1) When perceiving risk, feeling safe promoted self-confidence, (2) social support impacted students' perceptions of resilience, (3) intrinsic motivation promoted growth when facing adversity. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that AE and OP orientation programs have the capacity to build resilience skills regardless of the type of risk.
