Book excerpt: This thesis deals with an attempt to quantify subjective responses to sounds, especially in the discrimination between similar sounding noise-like stimuli. A model of the discrimination process as one of feature extraction and decision making about the presence of salient features is proposed. Experiments using both marine sounds and laboratory generated signals were conducted using trained University student listeners and Navy personnel. Two experimental methods were applied with one using a modification of classical threshold techniques. The other procedure used a continuous rating scale to elicit information about the confidence of the listener's discrimination decision.

The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

Book excerpt: This report describes research progress in three areas: the perception of complex sounds, including tonal sequences and bursts of frozen gaussian noise; models for the discrimination of complex sounds; and the perception of speech sounds, under various degrees of stimulus uncertainty and levels of training. Major accomplishments during this period include: the finding that the ability to detect very small frequency changes in single components of tonal sequences, previously assumed to be accomplished only after lengthy training on the specific discrimination task in question, is largely the result of familiarity with the stimulus and is relatively independent of the manner in which that familiarity was acquired; the previously described PTD rule for auditory pattern discrimination predicts the discrimination of changes in temporal as well as spectral properties of patterns, and a new model of auditory pattern discrimination that combines elements of Jeffress leaky integrator and the Durlach-Braida equalization-cancellation models is quite successful in describing the results of noise-burst discrimination experiments, including the PTD phenomena mentioned above.

A major reason for this is that historically, most perceptual research focused on the more basic processes involved in the detection and discrimination of simple stimuli. This work progressed in a connectionist fashion, attempting to clarify fundamental mechanisms in depth before addressing the more complex problems of pattern recognition and classification. This extensive and impressive research effort built a firm basis from which to speculate about these issues. What seemed lacking, however, was an overall characterization of the recognition problem – a broad theoretical structure to direct future research in this area. Consequently, our primary objective in this volume, originally published in 1981, was not only to review existing contributions to our understanding of classification and recognition, but to project fruitful areas and directions for future research as well. The book covers four areas: complex visual patterns; complex auditory patterns; multi-dimensional perceptual spaces; theoretical pattern recognition.

Handel treats the production and perception of music and speech in parallel throughout the text, arguing that their production and perception follows identical principles; music and speech share the same formal properties, involve the same cognitive mechanisms, and cannot exist in separate "modules." The way that a sound is produced determines the physical properties of the acoustic wave. These properties in turn lead to the perception of the event. The initial chapters take up physical processes, including a section on characterization of sound and discussion of the way instruments and speech produce musical sound. Handel explains how the environment affects perceived sounds, including reflection, reverberation, diffraction, and the Doppler effect. Subsequent chapters take up psychological processes: partitioning smeared sounds into discrete events, identifying sound sources, the units and phrases of speech and music, and speech and music rhythms. The final chapter provides a detailed treatment of the physiology and neurophysiology of the auditory system. All of the author's explanations are coherent and clear, and this strategy includes discussing particular pieces of research in detail rather than covering many things superficially Handel analyzes causes as well as describing phenomena and sets out for the reader the difficulties inherent in the research methods he discusses. He defines the physical, musical, and psychological terms used, even the most basic ones, and covers all of the experimental methods and statistical procedures in the text. A Bradford Book.
