Book The effect of radial wall motion on the velocity field inside a flexible tube conveying a pulsatile flow

Download or read book The effect of radial wall motion on the velocity field inside a flexible tube conveying a pulsatile flow written by Frank Joseph Raguso and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the experimental velocity data captured inside the rigid and flexible tubes with steady and pulsatile flow. The purpose of this thesis is to understand how the fluid motion interacts with the surrounding walls and internal motion. An experimental setup was modeled on Siemens NX software and built in order to perform experiments. The inner diameter of both the rigid and flexible tube was 22.2 mm. Silica particles were added to the fluid in order to capture the fluid's movement with a high speed camera for Particle lmage Velocimetry processing. These data captured were analyzed in MATLAB, where velocity fields were calculated and graphed. A set of experiments were conducted to confirm that the entrance length in the setup was not sufficient to produce a developed flow. Largest fluctuations in the tube were seen in the case of flexible walls and a 2 second period. The centerline fluctuations for the 2 second period corresponded to approximately 0.0383 m/s, largest fluctuations for the 1 second period corresponded to approximately 0.0247 m/s, and largest fluctuations for the 3 seconds period corresponded to approximately 0.0111 m/s. The maximum velocity fluctuations also corresponded to the largest wall motion seen in the 2 seconds period cases. Wall motion disturbs the velocity profile by adding and removing energy in the flow at the same oscillation as the wall motion. Another mechanism for how a flexible wall can add velocity fluctuations to the flow occurred at the transition between the rigid tube and the flexible tube. At the flexible tube expansions, a natural step formed in the tube material transition region. A backward facing step added additional perturbations in the flow by creating a slug which affected the velocity profile downstream. ln conclusion, flexible walls result in more fluctuations due to the wall motion and the backward facing step.

Book Cardiovascular Mechanics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michel R. Labrosse
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2018-09-13
  • ISBN : 1315280272
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Cardiovascular Mechanics written by Michel R. Labrosse and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to illustrate in specific detail how cardiovascular mechanics stands as a common pillar supporting such different clinical successes as drugs for high blood pressure, prosthetic heart valves and coronary artery bypass grafting, among others. This information is conveyed through a comprehensive treatment of the overarching principles and theories that are behind mechanobiological processes, aortic and arterial mechanics, atherosclerosis, blood and microcirculation, hear valve mechanics, as well as medical devices and drugs. Examines all major theoretical and practical aspects of mechanical forces related to the cardiovascular system. Discusses a unique coverage of mechanical changes related to an aging cardiovascular system. Provides an overview of experimental methods in cardiovascular mechanics. Written by world-class researchers from Canada, the US and EU. Extensive references are provided at the end of each chapter to enhance further study. Michel R. Labrosse is the founder of the Cardiovascular Mechanics Laboratory at the University of Ottawa, where he is a full professor within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has been an active researcher in academia along with being heavily associated with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He has authored or co-authored over 90 refereed communications, and supervised or co-supervised over 40 graduate students and post-docs.

Book Snapshots of Hemodynamics

Download or read book Snapshots of Hemodynamics written by Nicolaas Westerhof and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition is written in the same quick reference style as its predecessor to help clinical and basic researchers, as well as graduate students, understand hemodynamics. Hemodynamics makes it possible to characterize, in a quantitative way and often with noninvasive techniques, the function of the heart and the arterial system, individually and in combination. Snapshots of Hemodynamics provides a thorough grounding in the discipline that will help any medical professional and researcher in the field. The authors have designed each chapter such that it gives a succinct overview of individual topics in a concise and understandable format. Each chapter of this new edition has been extensively updated while new chapters have been included on pulmonary hemodynamics and wave intensity analysis. The new edition presents the newest current information on hemodynamics in this ever-changing field.
