Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Fin Shape Thermal Optimization Using Bejan s Constructal Theory

Download or read book Fin Shape Thermal Optimization Using Bejan s Constructal Theory written by Giulio Lorenzini and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains research results obtained by applying Bejan's Constructal Theory to the study and therefore the optimization of fins, focusing on T-shaped and Y-shaped ones. Heat transfer from finned surfaces is an example of combined heat transfer natural or forced convection on the external parts of the fin, and conducting along the fin. Fin's heat exchange is rather complex, because of variation of both temperature along the fin and convective heat transfer coefficient. Furthermore possible presence of more fins invested by the same fluid flow has to be considered. Classical fin theory tried to reduce the coupled heat transfer problem to a one-dimensional problem by defining an average temperature of the fin and writing equations using this parameter. However, it was shown that this approach cannot be used because of the effects of two-dimensional heat transfer, especially in the presence of short fins. CFD codes offer the possibility to consider bi-dimensional (and more generally, three-dimensional) effects and then a more real approach to the physic phenomena of finned surface's heat exchange. A commercial CFD code was used to analyse the case of heat exchange in presence of T-shaped fins, following an approach suggested by Bejan's Constructal Theory. The comparative results showed a significant agreement with previous research taken as a reference, and this result allows for the application of this approach to a wider range of systems. T-shaped optimized fin geometry is the starting point for further research. Starting from the optimal results (T-shape optimized fins), we show the trend of the assessment parameter (the dimensionless conductance) in function of the angle α between the two horizontal arms of the fin. A value for α, 90°

Book Determination of Free and Forced Convection Heta Transfer from Fin Arrays of Different Spacing

Download or read book Determination of Free and Forced Convection Heta Transfer from Fin Arrays of Different Spacing written by Mohd Khalis Aizat Abd Aziz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is about analysis of free and forced convection condition for specimen with fin and without fin. Fin is an extended surface that dissipates heat from or to the environment. Three specimens tested where one for without fin and another two are without the fin. The specimens are vertical plate, finned plate and circular staggered fins. The experiment starts with the free convection approaches which selected the five different power supplies to the chamber. Followed by the forced convection where two power selected which lower and higher power. Forced convection is about the assist by air or fluid. So, air is chosen then regulates five different speed of fan. Collect the temperature data from reading at the inlet, outlet and the wall temperature. Stops until the reading become constant at all taken point. Analysis of free convection starts with finding the Rayleigh number and Nusselt number using the air properties of film temperature. Then the theoretical and experimental heat transfer coefficient and amount of heat transfer can be determined. Coefficient for with fin specimen is higher than without fin specimen and the amount of heat transfer for specimen with fin is higher compare with the specimen without fin. Number fins increase will result the higher amount heat transfer. For forced convection is a bit different than the free convection manner that air is used, so the boundary layer should be estimate first by using the Renoylds number equation to determine either laminar or turbulent flow. Go after is Nusselt number calculation affected the value of theoretical heat transfer coefficient. For the experimental value is determined by using the power supplied value. Because of air, heat transfer energy by the energy exists as well the amount of heat flux. Circular staggered fins (with fin specimen) scored the highest value of coefficient heat transfer. The circular staggered fins also obtained the higher heat transfer amount due to the large surface area and the greater temperature difference. The experimental value for coefficient obtained no longer the same with the theoretical value because slight error will occur during the testing. The heat transfer also will be enhance with the increasing the velocity and sustain the flow to turbulent or transition for the forced convection case study. The higher of power supplied affecting the higher value of the heat transfer. Circular staggered cylinder fins mostly achieved the higher result for coefficient and the amount heat transfer rather than the other two specimens.

Book Forced Convection Heat Transfer from a Finned Array with an Adjustable Outer Channel Boundary

Download or read book Forced Convection Heat Transfer from a Finned Array with an Adjustable Outer Channel Boundary written by Terry L. Mellon and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis was made of the heat transfer characteristics of an array of longitudinal fins with an adjustable outer channel boundary and a constant heat flux into the base of the array. The channel boundary could be moved to provide fin tip clearance ratios from zero to twice the fin height. Velocity variations in the interfin space and the open channel adjacent to the fin tips caused a variation in the calculated heat transfer coefficients along the height of the finned array, with the maximum coefficient occuring in the region of maximum velocity. It was shown that fin tip heat loss was a function of the clearance between the fin tip and the outer channel boundary, and that the maximum heat loss could occur on or near the fin tip. It was also shown how the tip heat loss affected the heat transfer characteristics of the array. Centerline velocity profiles and streamline profiles developed for laminar flow with the finned array both heated and unheated. For the heated condition, two heat fluxes were used with three different clearance ratios. Temperature profiles within the fin were developed for the lower heat flux for both laminar and turbulent flow. Laminar flow results were compared to the analytical work of Acharya and Patankar.

Book Heat Transfer Effects of Streamwise Spacing and Natural Convection on Short Aspect Ratio Pin Fin Arrays

Download or read book Heat Transfer Effects of Streamwise Spacing and Natural Convection on Short Aspect Ratio Pin Fin Arrays written by Melissa Shallcross and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In gas turbine engines, the turbine comes just after the combustor, where fuel is mixed with air and ignited to produce a rapid expansion of hot gases. These turbine blades are thus exposed to an air temperature higher than the melting temperature of the turbine blade material, which threatens to destroy the airfoils. In order to combat this, jet engine manufacturers use several different cooling methods. One of these methods involves bleeding cooler bypass air routed from the upstream compressor through the turbine airfoils where arrays of short cylinders inside the trailing edge promote turbulence, therefore increasing the heat transfer from the blade to the cooling air. The heat transfer of these short pin fins is affected by the close proximity of the endwalls, making them unique compared to long cylinders in crossflow. The current study investigates the instantaneous and time-averaged heat transfer within short aspect ratio pin fin arrays of two streamwise spacings. Understanding the heat transfer characteristics of pin fin arrays will allow engineers to design more efficient arrays to incorporate into gas turbine engines. Using a heat flux microsensor embedded in an isothermal heated cylinder, the heat transfer around the circumference of a test pin is measured at ten-degree intervals. The instantaneous and time-averaged data is then compared for cylinders in multiple locations in the array at Reynolds numbers of 3000, 10000, 20000, and 50000. This data is taken at two streamwise spacings of 1.73 diameters between subsequent rows and 3.46 diameters between subsequent rows in order to compare the pin fin heat transfer at different array densities. The effect of natural convection on these tests was also studied. An experiment was performed in an attempt to find a correlation that could correct the heat transfer data so that only forced convection was reported.
