Book Effect of Overburden Pressure on Clay Compressibility

Download or read book Effect of Overburden Pressure on Clay Compressibility written by Ramachandra Phanikumar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total amount of settlement that a structure founded on a clay soil undergoes comprises of immediate (or elastic) and consolidation settlements. In the case of clay soils, amount of consolidation settlement (Sc) is more than that of immediate or elastic settlement (Se). Hence, it is important to correctly estimate the amount of consolidation settlement (Sc). The parameters that influence consolidation settlement of a field soil are initial degree of saturation (S%), void ratio (e) of soil prior to excavation, the amount of overburden pressure removed during trench making ( o), or in other words, the amount of rebound caused in the soil giving rise to final void ratio just before construction and the intensity of loading or the applied pressure ( ). This book presents an experimental study on the effect of above parameters on compressibility characteristics of a clay soil. The different steps undertaken in the field for footing construction are simulated in the laboratory and compressibility studied.

Book Compressibility of Contaminated Fine Grained Soils

Download or read book Compressibility of Contaminated Fine Grained Soils written by NJ. Meegoda and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was performed to investigate factors that control the compression index of contaminated soils and to evaluate the applicability of the correlations proposed by Skempton (1944) and Arulanandan et al. (1983) for contaminated soils. The literature search indicated that the compressibility of a soil depends on mechanical as well as physicochemical factors. The addition of chemicals to a soil changes its pore-fluid properties, and causes a change in mechanical and physicochemical factors and hence its settlement characteristics.

Book Effect of Temperature on Swelling Pressure and Compressibility of Soil

Download or read book Effect of Temperature on Swelling Pressure and Compressibility of Soil written by Ahsan Rabbani and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Geotechnology, grade: 9.36, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, language: English, abstract: Construction of building on clay soil is highly risky due to its poor strength. Clayey soil creates many problems to the Geotechnical Engineers primarily because of repeated change of moisture content. Normally, these soils increase in size and swell when they absorb water and reduce in size and shrink when they become dry. Volume change in soil leads to distortions in the form of settlement due to contraction as a result of dryness or in the form of expansion due to swelling as a result of the absorption of water. There may be the need for soil treatment to improve the engineering properties of such soil. Compacted bentonite is often used as a buffer materials and for radioactive waste disposal system. A good understanding of the hydro-mechanical behavior of clay soil is essential to ensure safe disposal. The present study reports the results on the effects of temperature on swelling pressure and compressibility characteristics of soil. In this study, two different type of soils were used. One of them was a bentonite (liquid limit = 139%) procured from Bikaner, Rajasthan another one was Rourkela local soil (liquid limit = 35%). A new oedometer was designed and developed in-house to carry out consolidation and swelling pressure tests at a higher temperature. Swelling pressures tests on compacted bentonite specimens of targeted dry density of 1.6 Mg/m3 were conducted under constant volume condition for the temperature range between 25 to 90 0C. Compressibility tests at various temperatures for both soils were conducted using distilled water as the saturating fluid. It observed that high temperature caused an increase in swelling pressure and compressibility index of bentonite soil. There is no effect of temperature on compressibility index of Rourkela local soil.

Book Unsaturated Soils Experimental Studies

Download or read book Unsaturated Soils Experimental Studies written by Tom Schanz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings document the various papers delivered and partially presented at the International Conference “From experimental evidence towards numerical modeling of unsaturated soils,” which was held in Weimar (Germany) during 18-19 September 2003. The conference was organized under the auspices of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and the National German G- technical Society (DGGT). The need to understand the behavior of unsaturated soils is becoming exclusively - sential for the geotechnical engineers and designers. In the last three decades many - searchers have made significant contribution to the understanding of the unsaturated soil mechanics. Nevertheless, application of the subject to variety of new problems still - quires our attention. This International conference is a mere attempt to unite researchers and engineers in geotechnical engineering and to discuss about the problems associated with the unsaturated soils. Doing so the objectives of these lecture notes are as follows: - to promote unsaturated soil mechanics for practical application, - to exchange experiences in experimental unsaturated soil mechanics and numerical modeling, - to discuss application of unsaturated soil mechanics to variety of problems. In other words, we could also name these two volumes as “From theory to daily pr- tice”. I would like to extend my deep sense of appreciation as the editor and the Head of the organizing committee, to many persons who have contributed either directly or indirectly to organize the International conference and to finalize these proceedings.

Book Experimental Study and Constitutive Modelling of the Time dependent Stress strain Behavior of Soils

Download or read book Experimental Study and Constitutive Modelling of the Time dependent Stress strain Behavior of Soils written by Weiqiang Feng and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new simplified Hypothesis B method is generalized to calculate the consolidation settlement of double soil layers for different stress-strain states under instant loading. Zhu and Yin method and US Navy method are adopted to obtain the average degree of consolidation for double soil layers. The calculated settlement of the new simplified Hypothesis B method and the results of finite element (FE) simulation are compared to evaluate the accuracy. It is found that the results from the new simplified Hypothesis B method adopting Zhu and Yin method are generally in good agreement with results from FE simulation, which verifies that relative error of Zhu and Yin method is within 11% for all calculated conditions of double layer soil profiles. As a result, Zhu and Yin method is recommended to obtain the average degree of consolidation of double soil layers. There are serious settlement problems for three reclamation projects of Binhai Garden in Guangzhou. The undisturbed clayey soil specimens, taken from the in-situ site of Binhai Garden, were conducted for determining the parameter values of compressibility and creep. Then, the new simplified Hypothesis B method using Zhu and Yin method and finite element simulation using a soft soil creep model and the improved EVPS model are used to predict the consolidation settlement. The construction period is considered in the calculation, which extends the applicable conditions of this new simplified Hypothesis B method. In the last chapter, main findings and conclusions of the study have summarized and listed. Recommendations for further are also presented.
