Book An Experimental Study of a Pin Fin Heat Exchanger

Download or read book An Experimental Study of a Pin Fin Heat Exchanger written by David Ramthun and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed experimental study has been carried out on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of a compact heat exchanger with pin fins, A modular wind- tunnel with a rectangular cross-section duct-flow area was constructed that would accommodate the heat exchanger test section with varying pin designs. The flow in the tunnel was achieved through a suction-type blower, and a leading entrance length section was added to achieve predictable flow conditions into the heat exchanger test section. The rig was comprehensively instrumented to provide all desired thermal and flow data. The results from this study provide useful empirical data to validate ongoing numerical studies of such heat exchanger designs.

Book Numerical and Experimental Study of the Performance of a Drop Shaped Pin Fin Heat Exchanger

Download or read book Numerical and Experimental Study of the Performance of a Drop Shaped Pin Fin Heat Exchanger written by Jihed Boulares and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research presents the results or a combined numerical and experimental study or heat transfer and pressure drop behavior in a compact heat exchanger (CHE) designed with drop-shaped pin tins. A numerical study using ANSYS was first conducted to select the optimum pin shape and configuration for the CHE. This was followed by an experimental study to validate the numerical model. The results indicate that the drop shaped pin tins yield a considerable improvement in heat transfer compared to circular pin tins tor the same pressure drop characteristics. This improvement is mainly due to the increased wetted surface area of the drop pins, and the delay in the flow separation as it passes the more streamlined drop shaped pin tins. The data and conclusions of this study can he used in heat exchanger design tor large heat flux cooling applications as in gas turbine blades, and high-power electronics.

Book Experimental Study of Micro Pin fin Heat Sinks and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Microchannel Heat Exchanger

Download or read book Experimental Study of Micro Pin fin Heat Sinks and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Microchannel Heat Exchanger written by Cameron J. Naderi and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microchannels in the application of heat sinks and heat exchangers play an important role in the field of heat transfer as the ever-increasing need for smaller components becomes apparent. Microchannels, although demanding larger pumping power in the systems they are integrated in, provide the superseding benefit of efficient heat transfer in a smaller and more cost-effective product when compared to larger scale heat exchange devices. This thesis focused on two areas relating to the study of microchannels. The first explored the performance of micro pin-fin heat sinks in quantitative studies of both the heat transfer and pressure drop of varying pin aspect and pitch ratios. Additionally, the study attempted to discover the effect of vortex shedding that occurs within the pin arrays of certain heat sinks and the geometric parameters that allow or prohibit its onset. The study found there to be a set of criteria for pin aspect and pitch ratios that would allow for vortex shedding, a flow feature that results in better heat transfer and lower pressure drop across the heat sink. The second topic examined in this thesis was the use of microchannels in a recuperator heat exchanger used in a supercritical carbon dioxide power generation cycle. A unit cell design of a heat exchanger was designed and tested for its heat transfer and pressure drop performance in order to provide results that would aid in designing a scaled-up version that would meet real-world demands. A viable design was created that could withstand conditions up to 90 ̊C and 120bar while also performing at 95% effectiveness.

Book Experimental Study of Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Over an Array of Short Micro Pin Fins

Download or read book Experimental Study of Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Over an Array of Short Micro Pin Fins written by Aditya Bhat and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Studies on thermal enhancement for electronic chips has been gaining prominence as increased transistor density in the chips calls for larger heat dissipation. Various enhancement techniques have been proposed ever since 1981, to enhance the heat dissipation from the chip surface. Micro pin fins have been gaining recognition as a highly favorable surface enhancement due to the design versatility it provides in the form of myriad geometric shapes and fin arrangements as opposed to convention microchannels. The micro pin fins however, present a larger pressure drop over the surface as compared to other conventional methods which reduces the thermal efficiency of the chip surface. To reduce the pressure drop associated with micro pin fins, short micro pin fins were proposed. A short micro pin fin arrangement is similar to micro pin fin arrays, with one change, in that short micro pin fins have a clearance between the fins and the top of the channel. The current study focusses on heat transfer and pressure drop over short micro pin fin arrays. Experimental studies were conducted over 10 mm × 10 mm with fin heights varying from 200 to 500 [microns] and clearance over the fins varying from 265 to 900 μm. Distilled water was used as the cooling medium. The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop characteristics were evaluated at varying fin heights and varying clearance of the surfaces with an aim to identify optimum fin height and clearance parameters. The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop data obtained from experiments were also evaluated with the correlation proposed by Tullius et al. Data showed that the highest heat transfer coefficient was observed for fins with the largest fin height. When fin clearance was evaluated for its effect on heat transfer coefficient, a hint of mixing phenomenon leading to enhancement in heat transfer coefficient was observed at higher clearance values. A higher pressure drop was observed at longer fins owing to the increased friction factor at the fin walls. The highest pressure drop of over 100 kPa was observed for a chip gasket combination which consisted of the longest fins with the least amount of clearance. It was also observed that the Nusselt number and Pressure drop correlations proposed by Tullius et al was not able to accurately predict the experimental data. However, the correlation did show the same trend as the experimental data, hence, the present correlation could be modified or used as a basis for new correlations of Nusselt number and friction factor."--Abstract.

Book An Experimental Investigation of the Performance of Staggered PIN FIN Array Laminar Flow Heat Exchangers

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Performance of Staggered PIN FIN Array Laminar Flow Heat Exchangers written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study concentrates on the empirical characterization of a staggered pin-fin array heat exchanger placed in a modular, rectangular wind tunnel. A full analysis of the heat transfer and pressure drop behavior was conducted on various pin-fin shapes, sizes, and configurations. The study was based on airflow over a wide range of Reynolds numbers in the laminar regime. The empirical data gathered can be used to corroborate and develop better numerical models to characterize the performance of such heat exchangers as well as scale down to the micro level for comparison with micro-heat exchangers.

Book Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Performance of Staggered Short Pin Fin Heat Exchangers

Download or read book Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Performance of Staggered Short Pin Fin Heat Exchangers written by Leonard J. Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three dimensional finite element based numerical model was used to analyze the heat transfer characteristics of various staggered short pin-fin array heat exchangers. The simulation was validated against data from an experimental rig as well as historical data and then used to estimate the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop for a wide range of Reynolds numbers for circular and airfoil-shaped pin fins. Circular pin configuration variations included changes in pin spacing, axial pitch and pin height ratio. Airfoil pin variations also included changes in length and aspect ratio. Correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor were developed. Using established performance metrics optimum configurations for both pin shapes were determined. The optimum airfoil pin array was shown to match the heat transfer rates obtained by the optimum circular pin configuration while incurring less than one third the specific fluid friction power loss. The results from this study would be of direct value in the design of a shroud enclosed heat exchanger concept being proposed for turbine blade cooling, or for cooling of high power electronic components, or in other high heat flux dissipation applications requiring a low- profile, high area-density based micro-heat exchanger design.
