Book Numerical Analysis of the Performance of Staggered Pin Fin Micro Heat Exchangers

Download or read book Numerical Analysis of the Performance of Staggered Pin Fin Micro Heat Exchangers written by Jui S. Choo and published by . This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of a staggered micro pin-fin heat exchanger were analyzed using a three dimensional finite element based numerical model. Simulations were conducted based on low Reynolds number, fully developed laminar airflow through an array of circular pin-fins. A range of results was obtained from different configurations with varying pin spacing, axial pitch and pin height. The results from this study would be useful in ongoing work on the design of a laminar flow micro heat exchanger for high heat flux dissipation systems.

Book Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Performance of Staggered Short Pin Fin Heat Exchangers

Download or read book Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Performance of Staggered Short Pin Fin Heat Exchangers written by Leonard J. Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three dimensional finite element based numerical model was used to analyze the heat transfer characteristics of various staggered short pin-fin array heat exchangers. The simulation was validated against data from an experimental rig as well as historical data and then used to estimate the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop for a wide range of Reynolds numbers for circular and airfoil-shaped pin fins. Circular pin configuration variations included changes in pin spacing, axial pitch and pin height ratio. Airfoil pin variations also included changes in length and aspect ratio. Correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor were developed. Using established performance metrics optimum configurations for both pin shapes were determined. The optimum airfoil pin array was shown to match the heat transfer rates obtained by the optimum circular pin configuration while incurring less than one third the specific fluid friction power loss. The results from this study would be of direct value in the design of a shroud enclosed heat exchanger concept being proposed for turbine blade cooling, or for cooling of high power electronic components, or in other high heat flux dissipation applications requiring a low- profile, high area-density based micro-heat exchanger design.

Book Development of Novel Tapered Pin Fin Geometries for Additive Manufacturing of Compact Heat Exchangers

Download or read book Development of Novel Tapered Pin Fin Geometries for Additive Manufacturing of Compact Heat Exchangers written by Julien Harry Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pin fin arrays are widely used to enhance forced convection heat transfer across various industries, finding application in turbine blade trailing edges, electronics cooling, and broadly for compact heat exchange. Fin shape greatly affects flow separation and turbulence generation, and optimizing performance relies on a balance between increased heat transfer and increased pressure loss along the array. Straight circular pin fins are well-characterized in the literature, and recent works have proven more complex elliptical and teardrop cross-sectional shapes to exhibit performance enhancements in both parameters. There exist few studies in the public record on tapered circular pin fins, but these have also proven to exhibit performance enhancements. To date, no example of research has been identified for tapered, complex pin fin geometries, and although these represent an avenue for overall performance gains, manufacturing the intricate components is difficult and time-consuming using conventional machining processes. The unique and nascent capabilities of additive manufacturing now allow their economical fabrication in an increasing number of fully-dense engineering materials. This thesis compares 21 fin arrays of varying fin cross-section, taper angle, taper profile, and array pattern, separated into eight geometry families. Experimental testing was carried out on a prototype open-loop wind tunnel and corroborated with computational fluid dynamics simulations. Non-dimensional metrics were defined and used to holistically compare heat transfer efficiency, pressure loss characteristics, and overall balanced performance between fin arrays. Topics for future work and potential methods of investigation are suggested.

Book excerpt: Thermohydrodynamic Programming and Constructal Design in Microsystems explains the direction of a morphing system configuration that is illustrated by life evolution in nature. This is sometimes referred to as the fourth law of thermodynamics, and was first applied in thermofluidic engineering, with more recent applications in physics and biology. The book specifically focuses on synthetic modeling and constructal optimization in the design of microsystemic devices, which are of particular interest to researchers and practitioners in the sphere of micro- and nanoscale physics, a mechanistically deviation from conventional theory. The book is an important reference resource for researchers working in the area of micro- and nanosystems technology and those who want to learn more about how thermodynamics can be effectively applied at the micro level. - Explains how the application of constructal theory can lead to more effective microsystems design - Offers an introduction to the fundamentals and application to different flow and heat/mass transport systems - Bridges the gap between theoretical design and optimization, from a practical point-of-view

Book A Numerical Investigation of Thermal hydraulic Characteristics in Three Dimensional Plate and Wavy Fin tube Heat Exchangers for Laminar and Transitional Flow Regimes

Download or read book A Numerical Investigation of Thermal hydraulic Characteristics in Three Dimensional Plate and Wavy Fin tube Heat Exchangers for Laminar and Transitional Flow Regimes written by Satchit Pradip Panse and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers are used in wide variety of industrial applications, particularly in the heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration industries. In most cases the working fluid is liquid on the tube side exchanging heat with a gas, usually air. The current study is focused on two fin configurations, the plain plate-fin and the wavy-fin. These two fin configurations are numerically investigated in both staggered and in-lined tube layouts. The present investigation ranges from laminar flow regime into the sub-critical or transitional flow regime. The suitability of the eddy viscosity turbulence models for the flow representation in the transitional flow regime is discussed in this study. This study reveals that the flow distinction between plain and wavy fin has a profound influence on the heat transfer and flow friction performance of these configurations when compared on the basis of tube layouts. The obtained results also indicate that the number of tube rows plays an important part for the overall heat exchanger performance and an optimum choice for the number of tube rows must be made in order to achieve the critical balance between high heat transfer performance and low pressure drop.

Book Numerical and Experimental Study of the Performance of a Drop Shaped Pin Fin Heat Exchanger

Download or read book Numerical and Experimental Study of the Performance of a Drop Shaped Pin Fin Heat Exchanger written by Jihed Boulares and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research presents the results or a combined numerical and experimental study or heat transfer and pressure drop behavior in a compact heat exchanger (CHE) designed with drop-shaped pin tins. A numerical study using ANSYS was first conducted to select the optimum pin shape and configuration for the CHE. This was followed by an experimental study to validate the numerical model. The results indicate that the drop shaped pin tins yield a considerable improvement in heat transfer compared to circular pin tins tor the same pressure drop characteristics. This improvement is mainly due to the increased wetted surface area of the drop pins, and the delay in the flow separation as it passes the more streamlined drop shaped pin tins. The data and conclusions of this study can he used in heat exchanger design tor large heat flux cooling applications as in gas turbine blades, and high-power electronics.
