Introduction The experimental investigation here reported aims to present a detailed description and analysis of the mental processes involved in the act of choosing, together with an interpretation of the functioning of these mental processes. In 1910 Michotte and Prum (6)made an experimental analysis of the act of choosing. Their materials consisted of groups of numbers which were written upon cards in such fashion that certain simple arithmetical operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing), were possible and convenient; and their method consisted of presenting one of these cards in a tachistoscope, with the instructions that the observer should choose for a serious motive either to add or subtract, to multiply or divide the numbers. Here it was found that one of the determining factors of the volitional consciousness consisted of a feeling of mental activity conscience de I action) which is unanalyzable and which is intimately associated with a consciousness of the self. The authors expressly state that this feeling of activity should be differentiated sharply from an awareness of muscular strain. Contemporary with these latter experiments, Barrett(3) investigated motives and motivation. He first established strong associations between eight unpleasantly tasting liquids and eight corresponding nonsense names; then he presented these names to his observers in as many combinations of pairs as possible. On a shelf between the observer and the experimental apparatus rested the two glasses of liquids corresponding to the names in the tachistoscope. In this paper the L9 orthogonal array is employed to design the experiments. The experimentation was carried out in Ador Welding Ltd. Pune and the tensile vigor was quantified utilizing Macrocosmic Testing Machine (UTM) at the Sharadchandra Pawar College of Engineering, Otur, workshop. The cull of erroneous parameters for welding may hazardous to the whole process and positions. This paper proposes and demonstrates the Taguchi’s Method for evaluating the performance measures of GMAW process. The input parameters such as current (Amp), Voltage (V0), welding speed (mm/min) and gas flow rate (Lit/min) are considered for study with tensile vigor as replication factor. The result of the paper can be utilized for maximizing the tensile vigor of AA7075-T73.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the syntax and usage of fragments (Morgan 1973), apparently subsentential utterances like "A coffee, please!" which fulfill the same communicative function as the corresponding full sentence "I'd like to have a coffee, please!". Even though such utterances are frequently used, they challenge the central role that has been attributed to the notion of sentence in linguistic theory, particularly from a semantic perspective. The first part of the book is dedicated to the syntactic analysis of fragments, which is investigated with experimental methods. Currently there are several competing theoretical analyses of fragments, which rely almost only on introspective data. The experiments presented in this book constitute a first systematic evaluation of some of their crucial predictions and, taken together, support an in situ ellipsis account of fragments, as has been suggested by Reich (2007). The second part of the book addresses the questions of why fragments are used at all, and under which circumstances they are preferred over complete sentences. Syntactic accounts impose licensing conditions on fragments, but they do not explain, why fragments are sometimes (dis)preferred provided that their usage is licensed. This book proposes an information-theoretic account of fragments, which predicts that the usage of fragments in constrained by a general tendency to distribute processing effort uniformly across the utterance. With respect to fragments, this leads to two predictions, which are empirically confirmed: Speakers tend towards omitting predictable words and they insert additional redundancy before unpredictable words.
