Book An Experimental Investigation of Large Amplitude Wave Propagation and Dynamic Elastic Properties in Longitudinally Impacted Polycarbonate Rods

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Large Amplitude Wave Propagation and Dynamic Elastic Properties in Longitudinally Impacted Polycarbonate Rods written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering materials have long been known to exhibit marked differences in their mechanical behavior under conditions of impact and high rates of loading as compared to their behavior under quasi-static loading conditions. Thus, the proper utilization of these materials in dynamic environments requires a knowledge of their behavior under dynamic conditions.

Book An Experimental Investigation of the Behavior of Polycarbonate Lexan Subjected to Impact Loading Large Amplitude Elastic Wave Propagation and Dynamic Material Properties

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Behavior of Polycarbonate Lexan Subjected to Impact Loading Large Amplitude Elastic Wave Propagation and Dynamic Material Properties written by W. L. Liddell and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strain-time and surface rotation-time data are reported for twenty-seven tests involving axial impact of 0.741 inch diameter polycarbonate rods. An analysis is made of the data to determine various dynamic properties of polycarbonate. The data was obtained using in-surface diffraction grating strain transducers illuminated by a pulsed ruby laser, with the strain and surface rotation-dependent diffraction pattern recorded by high-speed streak cameras. Strain-time histories are obtained for up to 250 micron sec after impact, at locations ranging from one-third to four diameters from impact. (Author, modified-PL).

Book Experimental Investigation of Large Amplitude Elastic Wave Propagation and the Elastic Plastic Transition in Polycarbonate LEXAN

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Large Amplitude Elastic Wave Propagation and the Elastic Plastic Transition in Polycarbonate LEXAN written by W. L. Liddell and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental system for determining strain-time and surface rotation-time histories during axial impact of rods is used to investigate the propagation of large-amplitude elastic strain waves and the elastic-plastic transition in polycarbonate (Lexan) rods. This previously-reported system employs in-surface diffraction grating strain transducers illuminated by a pulsed ruby laser, with the strain and surface rotation-dependent diffraction pattern recorded by high-speed streak cameras. Strain-time histories are obtained for times up to 250 microsec after impact at locations ranging from two to four diameters from the impact site in rods undergoing axial impact at striker velocities of approximately 540 ft/sec; strains to 8.65 percent and strain rates in excess of 2200 sec-1 are recorded. Strain-time histories at one-third diameter from the impact site at striker velocities ranging up to 700 ft/sec reveal that the elastic-plastic transition in Lexan for pulse-type loadings (approximately 120 microsec loading- unloading) occurs at about 11.5 percent strain, with an abrupt change in the character of the unloading as the transition strain is exceeded; strains to 13.3 percent and strain-rates to 15,700 sec-1 are recorded. The effect of a previous impact on the subsequent strain-time history is examined, as well as the relationship between maximum strain and residual strain for strains near the elastic-plastic transition. Book On direct and inverse problems related to longitudinal impact of non uniform elastic rods

Download or read book On direct and inverse problems related to longitudinal impact of non uniform elastic rods written by Burgert, Jens and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of two non-uniform elastic rods is considered and a recursive method was developed that solves the inverse problem: Find the location-dependent impedance function of the impacting rod that generates a prescribed impact force. The developed method delivers exact solutions in closed-form. Moreover, a condition is derived which states if a physically meaningful solution exists. Finally, the underlying 1D model has been validated experimentally.

Book Propagation of a Large Amplitude Longitudinal Wave in a Semi infinite Elastic Rod

Download or read book Propagation of a Large Amplitude Longitudinal Wave in a Semi infinite Elastic Rod written by K. C. Valanis and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general solution is given to the problem of large amplitude wave propagation in a semi-infinite elastic thin rod. The solution is obtained by the method of characteristics. An explicit form of the solution is given in the case where an end velocity, which is a step function of time, is prescribed. More general types of end velocity can be accommodated provided that the variation with time is monotonically increasing; otherwise shocks will form and the present solution is no longer valid.

Book An Experimental Investigation of Elasticplastic Pulse Propagation in Aluminum Rods at Elevated Temperatures

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Elasticplastic Pulse Propagation in Aluminum Rods at Elevated Temperatures written by S. R. Bodner and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments are reported involving explosive loading at one end of long, annealed, commercially pure, aluminum rods at temperatures up to 750F. The stress waves are detected by a condenser microphone at the far end of the rod and, in some cases, by strain gages at a cross-section distant from the impact end. The essential features of the recorded velocity-time profiles and strain-time profiles are in agreement with the predictions of a rate independent elastic-plastic theory which takes a Bauschinger effect into account. At room temperature, the reference dynamic stress-strain curve does not differ appreciably from the quasi-static stress-strain curve whereas at elevated temperatures there appears to be a marked difference between the dynamic and quasi-static stress-strain curves. Since the maximum plastic strains are small at cross-sections remote from the impact end the measurements, and consequently the conclusions, are limited to small strains beyond the proportional limit.
