Book An Experimental Investigation of Laminar Hypersonic Cavity Flows

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Laminar Hypersonic Cavity Flows written by Kenneth M. Nicoll and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made of the recovery factor and heat-transfer distributions on a set of cone-models incorporating annular cavities. This study is the second part of a two-part program. The first section contained measurements of the pressure distributions. The results show that the recovery factor in laminar, hypersonic cavity flow is almost constant within the cavity and downstream of reattachment, and is very close to the laminar attached-flow value. In the immediate vicinity of reattachment, the recovery factor is slightly higher than this value (less than 5%). The lowest values of the heat-transfer coefficient are found on the cavity floors, where a minimum of about 10 to 20% of the attached-flow value is reached. The highest values of the heat-transfer coefficient are in the immediate vicinity of reattachment. An average reattachment heattransfer coefficient of about three times the basic cone heat-transfer coefficient was measured on one cavity model. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of Cavity Aeroacoustics in High Speed Flows

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Cavity Aeroacoustics in High Speed Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this report has been directed to study the effects of mass injection into the flow upstream of a cavity to understand the weapon bay cavity's flow field and its aeroacoustics. The objective also was to control the development of upstream boundary layer, and therefore, to control the development of the shear layer over the cavity. Control of the shear layer has enabled us to significantly reduce or to fully eliminate the weapons bay's aeroacoustic interactions. This study was performed in a wind tunnel at several nominal Mach numbers between 0.5 to 1.8 and at unit Reynolds numbers up to 17 millions per foot. Measurements were performed for a number of injection distributions. The large amplitude oscillations measured without mass injection was successfully and totally eliminated with proper mass injection.

Book An Experimental Investigation of the Control of the Shear layer Flow Over a Cavity

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Control of the Shear layer Flow Over a Cavity written by David M. Birch and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An experimental investigation into the characteristics of the unsteady laminar shear layer developed over a wall-mounted cavity was conducted, and the effects of the addition of a flush-mounted rotating cylinder to the leading edge or trailing edge of the cavity were quantified through extensive velocity and frequency measurements. It is shown that the injection of circulation resulting from the rotation of the leading edge cylinder caused the shear layer deflect into the cavity and re-attach to the cavity floor at greater cavity depths; also, the additional momentum caused a delay of the formation of shear-layer vortices, interrupting the cavity vortex formation-impingement feedback phenomenon. Higher leading-edge cylinder rotation speeds induced rapid laminar-to-turbulent transition, precluding any of the periodicity associated with laminar shear-layer flow. Furthermore, though the trailing-edge is the source of the feedback information for the self-sustained vortex formation, rotation of a cylinder at the trailing edge had little effect on the flow fields. Experiments were carried out with a ratio of separating boundary layer momentum thickness to impingement length of 6.07 x 10-3 ." --
