Book An Experimental Investigation of Boundary Layer Transition on a Cone at Angle of Attack

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Boundary Layer Transition on a Cone at Angle of Attack written by A. Martellucci and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first part of the Strategic Re-entry Technology (STREET G) task to determine the effect of asymmetric transition on static stability, an experimental investigation of the influence of angle of attack on boundary layer transition from location and shape has been conducted at AEDC Tunnel B at Mach 8. The model was a stainless steel 7.2 deg half-angle cone with three bluntness ratios. For each of the bluntness ratios, heat transfer data were obtained for four values of the free stream Reynolds number and for four angles of attack, that is, alpha = 0 deg, 1 deg, 2 deg, and 4 deg. Comparisons of the heat transfer at alpha = o deg were made with theory and good agreement resulted.

Book Boundary Layer Studies on a Spinning Cone

Download or read book Boundary Layer Studies on a Spinning Cone written by Walter B. Sturek and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the effects of spin induced distortion of the boundary layer on a spinning 10 degree half angle cone at Mach 2, 3 and 4 is reported. The profile of the location of boundary layer transition has been determined completely about the surface of the cone model from spark shadowgraphs. These spark shadowgraphs were taken with the model mounted on an offset strut which was rolled incrementally in azimuth to reveal the entire surface of the model. The profile of the boundary layer thickness at the base of the cone has also been determined from the spark shadowgraphs. Strain gage balance measurements of Magnus and normal force were made for three significantly different boundary layer configurations and confirm the extreme sensitivity of Magnus to boundary layer configuration.

Book Hypersonic Boundary Layer Stability Experiments on a Flared Cone Model at Angle of Attack in a Quiet Wind Tunnel

Download or read book Hypersonic Boundary Layer Stability Experiments on a Flared Cone Model at Angle of Attack in a Quiet Wind Tunnel written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-18 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the effects of angle of attack on hypersonic boundary-layer stability on a flared-cone model was conducted in the low-disturbance Mach-6 Nozzle-Test Chamber Facility at NASA Langley Research Center. This unique facility provided a 'quiet' flow test environment which is well suited for stability experiments because the low levels of freestream 'noise' minimize artificial stimulation of flow-disturbance growth. Surface pressure and temperature measurements documented the adverse-pressure gradient and transition-onset location. Hot-wire anemometry diagnostics were applied to identify the instability mechanisms which lead to transition. In addition, the mean flow over the flared-cone geometry was modeled by laminar Navier-Stokes computations. Results show that the boundary layer becomes more stable on the windward ray and less stable on the leeward ray relative to the zero-degree angle-of-attack case. The second-mode instability dominates the transition process at a zero-degree angle of attack, however, on the windward ray at an angle of attack this mode was completely stabilized. The less-dominant first-mode instability was slightly destabilized on the windward ray. Non-linear mechanisms such as saturation and harmonic generation are identified from the flow-disturbance bispectra. Book An Experimental Investigation of the Flow Field Around a Yawed Cone

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Flow Field Around a Yawed Cone written by Robert H. Feldhuhn and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the flow field associated with a highly yawed cone was conducted at a Mach number of 5 and a free-stream Reynolds number per foot of 4,400,000. Surface static pressure measurements, flow-field surveys and schlieren photographs were obtained on a sharp five-degree semi-vertex angle cone at an angle of attack of 24 degrees. The results of the measurements indicate that the flow field on the leeward side of a highly yawed cone is very similar to that of a circular cylinder in supersonic cross flow. The essential difference between these two flow fields is the presence of a disturbance from the tip of the cone which separates the gas which has passed through the shock wave on the windward side from the flow which has passed through the weaker portion of the shock wave on the leeward side of the cone.
