Book Experimental Investigation of the Turbulent Large Scale Temporal Flow in the Wing Body Junction

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Turbulent Large Scale Temporal Flow in the Wing Body Junction written by E. P Rood (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the fluid dynamic flow in the wing-body junction was made to reveal the existence of large scale, time-dependent structures. These temporal features are discussed relative to the three major parts of the mean flow: the onset boundary layer, the wing-body junction flow characterized by the horseshoe root vortex, and the wing-body junction wake flow. Distinct flow structures, distinguished by bandwidths, were observed in all parts of the flow. One type of structure was due to the distortion of the existing structure of the onset boundary layer by the wing. A second and a third structure were newly created in the flow by the presence of the wing. These unique structures along the body were boundary layer phenomena, clearly distinguishable from ordinary Strouhal-type shedding at the wing trailing edge. The measurements distinguishing the structures were made using applications of two-point spectral correlation analyses of the flow velocities. The application of this estbalished procedure was made possible by modern high speed data techniques. An orderly framework of definitions and discussion is presented around which additional research can be performed to discover the details of the flow structure. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of Appendage flat Plate Junction Flow

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Appendage flat Plate Junction Flow written by Stuart C. Dickinson and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A horseshoe root vortex secondary flow forms at the junction of a flat plate and an appendage, creating a three-dimensional, separated flow. Flow visualizations, pressure measurements on the flat plate, and three-dimensional mean and fluctuating velocity measurements were made for two appendage shapes at zero angle of attack with a turbulent incoming bocundary layer. The radius of curvature of the leading edge affects the strength of the secondary vortex flow. The vorticity is close to the wall, on the order of the momentum thickness of the incoming boundary lacycr, and has a flattened shape. The vortex breaks down and the vorticity is conserved as shear layers alongside of and in the wake of the appendage.

Book An Experimental Investigation 0f Heat Transfer in Three Dimensional and Separating Turbulent Boundary Layers

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation 0f Heat Transfer in Three Dimensional and Separating Turbulent Boundary Layers written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbulence structure of convective beat transfer was studied experimentally in complex three-dimensional and separating turbulent boundary layers. Three test cases whose fluid dynamics have been well documented were examined. In case 1, time- and spatially-resolved surface heat transfer was measured in the nose region of a wing-body junction formed by a wing and a flat plate. Both the wing and the endwall were heated and held at a constant uniform temperature 20 C above ambient temperature. Heat flux rates were increased up to a factor of 3 over the heat flux rates in the approach boundary layer. The rms of the heat flux fluctuations were as high as 25% of the mean heat flux in the vortex-dominated nose region. Away from the wing, upstream of the time-averaged vortex center, augmentation in the heat flux is due to increased turbulent mixing caused by large-scale unsteadiness of the vortex. Adjacent to the wing the augmentation in heat flux is due to a change in the mean velocity field. In case 2, simultaneous surface heat flux and temperature profiles were measured at 8 locations in the spatially-developing pressure-driven three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer upstream of a wing-body junction. Mean heat transfer was decreased 10% by three-dimensionality. The turbulent Prandtl number in the near-wall region of logarithmic temperature variation was approximately 0.9 at all measurement locations in the three-dimensional boundary layer. Profiles of the skewness factor of temperature fluctuations and conditionally-averaged temperature signals during a sweep/ejection event suggest that the strength of ejections of hot fluid from the near-wall region are decreased by three-dimensionality.

Book An Experimental Investigation of Vortex Breakdown in Tubes at High Reynolds Numbers

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Vortex Breakdown in Tubes at High Reynolds Numbers written by Francis G. Novak and published by . This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with non-cavitating swirling flows with vortex breakdown in various tubes. Phenomenological and quantitative investigations were carried out at Reynolds numbers as high as 300,000. It was shown that a high Re(D) vortex transitions to its new state (breaks down) via a rapidly spinning spiral form, as demonstrated with 4,000 frame per second video, short exposure time (6 ns) imaging, and Digital Particle Image Velocimetry. Of the known types, the spiral emerges as the fundamental breakdown form and the axisymmetric bubble may now be regarded as a relatively low Re(D) occurrence that is bypassed at sufficiently high Re(D). Some new phenomena were observed at high Re(D): Extremely rapid spiral rotation (over 1,000 revolutions per second), core bifurcation, and changes in the sense of the spiral windings. Familiar features of breakdowns, such as the transition from a jet-like to wake-like axial velocity profile and the rapidly expanding vortex core, were observed in extensive time averaged velocity and turbulence results ascertained with Laser Doppler Velocimetry. However, a mean stagnation point and recirculation were absent in the highest Re(D) flow. The core meandering and stagnation point darting in the turbulent flow field were quantified and discussed in detail.
