Book An Experimental Examination of the Relationship Between Chemiluminescent Light Emissions and Heat release Rate Under Non Adiabatic Conditions

Download or read book An Experimental Examination of the Relationship Between Chemiluminescent Light Emissions and Heat release Rate Under Non Adiabatic Conditions written by L. C. Haber and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion instability research has matured over the last decade and with it the need for more detailed diagnostics has increased. One main gap in the diagnostics is the ability to obtain a reliable quantitative measure of unsteady heat-release rate. In an effort to move in this direction using chemiluminescence as the measured quantity, this paper examines the formation of chemiluminescence light in premixed flames under non-adiabatic conditions. The main chemiluminescence emitters considered in the study are OH and CH. Experimental results for two types of burners are reported, a laminar Bunsen burner with co-flow and a ceramic honeycomb flat flame burner. The study shows that although the chemiluminescence observed in the two burners behaves very differently with respect to changes in experimental variables, the variation can be fully understood. OH chemiluminescence is found to be a good indicator of heat-release in both burners, whereas CH chemiluminescence is shown to be insensitive to some changes in heat- release rate. Based on the experimental results, the notion that chemiluminescence yield behaves linearly with flow rate cannot be universally supported. The non-linear variation observed is shown to correspond to an equally non- linear variation of heat-release with flow-rate. The results of the study thus have important ramifications for the interpretation of chemiluminescence measurements in dynamic combustion environments.

Book Combustion Instabilities in Gas Turbine Engines

Download or read book Combustion Instabilities in Gas Turbine Engines written by Timothy C. Lieuwen and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 2005 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers gas turbine users and manufacturers a valuable resource to help them sort through issues associated with combustion instabilities. In the last ten years, substantial efforts have been made in the industrial, governmental, and academic communities to understand the unique issues associated with combustion instabilities in low-emission gas turbines. The objective of this book is to compile these results into a series of chapters that address the various facets of the problem. The Case Studies section speaks to specific manufacturer and user experiences with combustion instabilities in the development stage and in fielded turbine engines. The book then goes on to examine The Fundamental Mechanisms, The Combustor Modeling, and Control Approaches.

Book Low Intensity Long Duration Chemiluminescent Systems Part 2 Chemiluminescence from Bis 2 4 dichloro 6 carboalkoxyphenyl Oxalates

Download or read book Low Intensity Long Duration Chemiluminescent Systems Part 2 Chemiluminescence from Bis 2 4 dichloro 6 carboalkoxyphenyl Oxalates written by Christopher D. Dowd and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various oxalate esters have been synthesised and their chemiluminescent emission examined in an attempt to produce an improved low intensity, disposable lighting device suitable for 10 hours operation. Derivatives of the bis(2-carboalkoxy-4,6-dinitrophenyl)oxalate series were shown to possess unsuitable stability while the chemiluminescence of the bis(6-carboalkoxy-2,4,5-trichlorophenyl)oxalates was too intense to modify suitably. A number of bis(6-carboalkoxy-2,4-dichlorophenyl)oxalates were prepared and by treatment with various combinations of catalyst and inhibitor satisfactory low intensity light emission could be achieved after a 5 minute induction period. Optimum conditions were: oxalate ester, 2 x 10( -2)M; H2O2, 2 x 10( -2)M; potassium salicylates, 5 x 10( -4M); oxalic acid, 10( -4M). The storage stabilities and solubilities of the dichloro series of oxalates were superior to those of 2,4,6-TCPO. Aspects of the synthesis of the substituted salicylic acid precursors to the oxalates are discussed. The merits of chemiluminescent systems relative to beta lights are considered for the particular case of low level illumination. (Author).

Book Evaluation of Chemiluminescence as a Measurement Option for Industrial Flame Monitoring and Process Control

Download or read book Evaluation of Chemiluminescence as a Measurement Option for Industrial Flame Monitoring and Process Control written by Philip James Geddis and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultraviolet-visible chemiluminescent emission features in laboratory-scale flames have been shown by several researchers to correlate well with the ame's equivalence ratio, and it has been suggested that this relation could be used to actively control flames. This study investigated the feasibility of extending this knowledge to the industrial setting. Radiative emissions from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and thermal generating station burner flames were mainly characterized by thermally-induced greybody spectra; emissions from electronically excited species of OH*, CH*, and CO2* were generally weak and did not offer any unique information that could be used as part of a flame diagnostic system. A sub-study which assessed the impact of biomass cofiring demonstrated that emissions of SO2, NO x, and fossil-CO2 could be reduced with direct fuel replacement. The sensor system could be used as a pyrometer, and as part of a burner balancing strategy to counter increased CO emissions and decreased efficiency.

Book A Gallery of Combustion and Fire

Download or read book A Gallery of Combustion and Fire written by Charles E. Baukal, Jr. and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gallery of Combustion and Fire is the first book to provide a graphical perspective of the extremely visual phenomenon of combustion in full color. It is designed primarily to be used in parallel with, and supplement existing combustion textbooks that are usually in black and white, making it a challenge to visualize such a graphic phenomenon. Each image includes a description of how it was generated, which is detailed enough for the expert but simple enough for the novice. Processes range from small scale academic flames up to full scale industrial flames under a wide range of conditions such as low and normal gravity, atmospheric to high pressures, actual and simulated flames, and controlled and uncontrolled flames. Containing over 500 color images, with over 230 contributors from over 75 organizations, this volume is a valuable asset for experts and novices alike.
