Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to obtain the detailed description of the flow field in a sink vortex-type device applicable as a flueric angular rate sensor. Basically, the device consists of two coaxial surfaces with an outlet tube on the axis of symmetry. Radial inflow of the fluid develops a sink flow field with a vortex generated by an angular rate input through fluid coupling at the outer radii of the surfaces. Experimental and analytical studies were conducted of nonsteady flow (primarily impulsive) in the pancake region and of the flow field in the sink region. The study of the sink region was conducted to develop a rational basis for the design of the sink wall contour and to obtain a definition of the flow field in the sink region. Theoretical analyses of three sink contours were conducted; these were mechanically designed, fabricated and tested using hot-wire anemometry techniques to measure the velocity distributions and turbulence intensities. In addition, a computer program was developed for the numerical solution of the rotational Euler equations for general prescribed inlet conditions and axisymmetric boundary conditions. With this program, inviscid flow fields were computer for various boundary conditions. Correlation of these analytic results with the experimentally determined flow fields is summarized. (Author).
