Book An Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Interaction of Nonbreaking Long waves with a Two dimensional Surface Piercing type Rigid Thin Vertical Barrier

Download or read book An Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Interaction of Nonbreaking Long waves with a Two dimensional Surface Piercing type Rigid Thin Vertical Barrier written by Khaled Abdullah Al-Banaa and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our study is concentrated on studying the interaction of solitary and cnoidal waves with a surface piercing-type vertical barrier. The approach used is an amalgamation of a series of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations where the maximum runup heights and maximum forces are obtained for both solitary and cnoidal waves. The results are valid for 0 & le; D/h & le; 1.0, Froude number 0.032 & le; H/h & le; 0.42 and the corresponding Reynold's numbers ranging between 102 and 106. Simulations for a prototype scale are also performed so as to ensure that the scaling effects are not significant. Furthermore, the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique is employed to measure the flow kinematics in the vicinity of the vertical barrier. The results exhibit flow separation, vortex generation and turbulent evolution. A strong correlation is observed between turbulent kinetic energy and vortex generation. A Keulegan-Carpenter number (KC) and Reynold's number (Re) are proposed to characterize the vortex strength and maximum turbulent kinetic energy kmax, respectively. The relationship between various wave parameters H/h and different draft ratios, D/h, of the vertical barrier on energy transmission, reflection and dissipation coefficients were investigated numerically using the present model. The results show that the maximum dissipation coefficient Kd can be as high as 20%--30% in case of solitary and cnoidal waves, respectively. The maximum dissipation coefficient Kd occurred when the penetration depth ratio is at D/h = 0.75.

Book Numerical Investigation of Nonlinear Wave Interaction in a Two Dimensional Boundary Layer

Download or read book Numerical Investigation of Nonlinear Wave Interaction in a Two Dimensional Boundary Layer written by John W. Murdock and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spectral method is used to solve for the unsteady, two-dimensional flow over a flat plate in the Reynolds number range of transition. The physical problem considered is the propagation of large amplitude (nonlinear) Tollmien-Schlichting waves in a boundary layer. The solutions are generally in qualitative agreement with nonlinear stability theories in that: (1) nonlinear effects can be destabilizing, (2) the growth/decay behavior of the primary mode is changed only slightly by nonlinear effects, and (3) the second temporal harmonic is usually a second spatial harmonic. There are, however, regions in the flow in which both (1) and (3) are not true. Details of the solution in such a region are given to illustrate the complex nonlinear wave interactions possible in a boundary layer. (Author).

Book Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters

Download or read book Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters written by Leo H. Holthuijsen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters describes the observation, analysis and prediction of wind-generated waves in the open ocean, in shelf seas, and in coastal regions with islands, channels, tidal flats and inlets, estuaries, fjords and lagoons. Most of this richly illustrated book is devoted to the physical aspects of waves. After introducing observation techniques for waves, both at sea and from space, the book defines the parameters that characterise waves. Using basic statistical and physical concepts, the author discusses the prediction of waves in oceanic and coastal waters, first in terms of generalised observations, and then in terms of the more theoretical framework of the spectral energy balance. He gives the results of established theories and also the direction in which research is developing. The book ends with a description of SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore), the preferred computer model of the engineering community for predicting waves in coastal waters.

Book MARE WINT

Download or read book MARE WINT written by Wiesław Ostachowicz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a holistic, interdisciplinary overview of offshore wind energy, and is a must-read for advanced researchers. Topics, from the design and analysis of future turbines, to the decommissioning of wind farms, are covered. The scope of the work ranges from analytical, numerical and experimental advancements in structural and fluid mechanics, to novel developments in risk, safety & reliability engineering for offshore wind. The core objective of the current work is to make offshore wind energy more competitive, by improving the reliability, and operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies of wind turbines. The research was carried out under the auspices of the EU-funded project, MARE-WINT. The project provided a unique opportunity for a group of researchers to work closely together, undergo multidisciplinary doctoral training, and conduct research in the area of offshore wind energy generation. Contributions from expert, external authors are also included, and the complete work seeks to bridge the gap between research and a rapidly-evolving industry.

Book Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism

Download or read book Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism written by Claudine Lacroix and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-12 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of highly frustrated magnetism has developed considerably and expanded over the last 15 years. Issuing from canonical geometric frustration of interactions, it now extends over other aspects with many degrees of freedom such as magneto-elastic couplings, orbital degrees of freedom, dilution effects, and electron doping. Its is thus shown here that the concept of frustration impacts on many other fields in physics than magnetism. This book represents a state-of-the-art review aimed at a broad audience with tutorial chapters and more topical ones, encompassing solid-state chemistry, experimental and theoretical physics.

Book Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods

Download or read book Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods written by United Nations and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manual of Tests and Criteria contains criteria, test methods and procedures to be used for classification of dangerous goods according to the provisions of Parts 2 and 3 of the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Model Regulations, as well as of chemicals presenting physical hazards according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). As a consequence, it supplements also national or international regulations which are derived from the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods or the GHS. At its ninth session (7 December 2018), the Committee adopted a set of amendments to the sixth revised edition of the Manual as amended by Amendment 1. This seventh revised edition takes account of these amendments. In addition, noting that the work to facilitate the use of the Manual in the context of the GHS had been completed, the Committee considered that the reference to the "Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods" in the title of the Manual was no longer appropriate, and decided that from now on, the Manual should be entitled "Manual of Tests and Criteria".
