Download or read book An Exorbitant Lapse of Realism written by Christopher J. Mclean and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book was written, published and edited by me in its entirety, and I'd like to just note that I am not a professional writer. There are most likely some errors in different places that I missed, even though I worked very hard to correct as many I could. I just grew tired and ran out of patience after proof reading and rewriting this novel over and over for many months after I finished writing it. With that being said, I hope you will enjoy my efforts to produce a story about the pain and anguish that can consume someone's mind when they are having difficulty dealing with a specific trauma. My own personal experiences that inspired this novel will remain undisclosed to the general public for obvious reasons. I'd like to thank all the readers of this novel with all my heart for giving my first novel a chance to entertain your senses." Christopher J. McLean An Exorbitant Lapse of Realism...... Introducing Jon McLeod, the author's visionary and keeper of the nightmares. Welcome to his world, his thoughts, his mind, his anger, his frustration.... Here is his story. Jon McLeod is a family man, and a good man. But, now his family is torn apart and will never be the same. Jon McLeod lived a normal life with happiness and contention. Now he lives as a hopeless and lost soul, and feels that he has no control over his future. Jon McLeod was a proud father who knew his daughter loved and respected him. Now he feels like he failed her and that she will forever resent him for what he has become. Jon McLeod just wanted live the dream the best he could, like everyone else. But now, he must live the nightmare, over and over again. Jon McLeod's inabilities to deal with a specific tragedy that has thrown his heart and soul into the burning pits of Hell will destroy his chances of ever regaining his once normal life, if he doesn't learn to find the way to rebuild his inner strengths. This is a story of the journey into Jon's mind as he juggles all his fears, past and present, through voices, images and unpredictable dreams. Experience his journey as he tries to find a way to cope with life after one of his own suffers an unforeseen act of abuse that will forever change his family's lives. Enter the mind of Jon McLeod, family man, the good man, who has succumbed to a life consumed with an exorbitant lapse of realism.

Book The Speculative Turn

Download or read book The Speculative Turn written by Levi Bryant and published by re.press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continental philosophy has entered a new period of ferment. The long deconstructionist era was followed with a period dominated by Deleuze, which has in turn evolved into a new situation still difficult to define. However, one common thread running through the new brand of continental positions is a renewed attention to materialist and realist options in philosophy. Among the current giants of this generation, this new focus takes numerous different and opposed forms. It might be hard to find many shared positions in the writings of Badiou, DeLanda, Laruelle, Latour, Stengers, and Zizek, but what is missing from their positions is an obsession with the critique of written texts. All of them elaborate a positive ontology, despite the incompatibility of their results. Meanwhile, the new generation of continental thinkers is pushing these trends still further, as seen in currents ranging from transcendental materialism to the London-based speculative realism movement to new revivals of Derrida. As indicated by the title The Speculative Turn, the new currents of continental philosophy depart from the text-centered hermeneutic models of the past and engage in daring speculations about the nature of reality itself. This anthology assembles authors, of several generations and numerous nationalities, who will be at the center of debate in continental philosophy for decades to come.

Book Myth and Madness

Download or read book Myth and Madness written by Mortimer Ostow and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report on a nine-year study of the psychodynamics of antisemitism. Undertaken by Dr. Mortimer Ostow on behalf of the Psychoanalytic Research and Development Fund, it puts flesh and bones on the discussion of antisemitism in Sigmund Freud's 1939 classic theoretical study Moses and Monotheism. Its close adherence to case material and its application of psychoanalytic theory to historical data and cultural products yield new insights into bigotry and equity alike. By examining prejudiced patients and their myths, Dr. Ostow shows the common threads of antisemitism in a variety of national and cultural settings, even under supposed optimal conditions when antisemitism is stringently controlled. The work uses the psychiatric approach, and can be read as a study of how this area of behavioral science reveals the interplay of the individual and the group, cultural background and material opportunities.

Book An Unwritten Future

Download or read book An Unwritten Future written by Jonathan Kirshner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument for the classical realist approach to world politics An Unwritten Future offers a fresh reassessment of classical realism, an enduring approach to understanding crucial events in the international political arena. Jonathan Kirshner identifies the fundamental flaws of classical realism’s would-be successors and shows how this older, more nuanced and sophisticated method for studying world politics better explains the formative events of the past. Kirshner also reveals how this approach is ideally equipped to comprehend the vital questions of the present—such as the implications of China’s rise, the ways that social and economic change alter the balance of power and the nature of international conflict, and the consequences of the end of the US-led postwar order for the future of world politics. Laying out realism’s core principles, Kirshner discusses the contributions of the perspective’s key thinkers, including Thucydides, Hans Morgenthau, and Raymond Aron, among others. He illustrates how a classical realist approach gives new insights into major upheavals of the twentieth century, such as Britain’s appeasement of Nazi Germany and America’s ruinous involvement in Vietnam. Kirshner also addresses realism’s limits and explores contemporary issues, including the ascent of great power challengers, the political implications of globalization, and the diffusion of power in modern world politics. A reexamination of the realist tradition, with a renewed emphasis on the crucial roles played by uncertainty, contingency, and contestation, An Unwritten Future demonstrates how a once-popular school of thought provides invaluable insights into pressing real-world problems.

Book Historical Painting Techniques Materials and Studio Practice

Download or read book Historical Painting Techniques Materials and Studio Practice written by Arie Wallert and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1995-08-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
