In the last months of his life he funnelled his waning energy into a series of remarkable still lifes - 16 small paintings of flowers - which are brought together in this book. An essay by Andrew Forge pays tribute to the artist's struggle and his legacy, and Robert Gordon's selections from Manet's letters add poignancy to this last glow of a brilliant artistic flame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectacular transformation of Paris during the 19th century into a city of tree-lined boulevards and public parks both redesigned the capital and inspired the era’s great Impressionist artists. The renewed landscape gave crowded, displaced urban dwellers green spaces to enjoy, while suburbanites and country-dwellers began cultivating their own flower gardens. As public engagement with gardening grew, artists increasingly featured flowers and parks in their work. Public Parks, Private Gardens includes masterworks by artists such as Bonnard, Cassatt, Cézanne, Corot, Daumier, Van Gogh, Manet, Matisse, Monet, and Seurat. Many of these artists were themselves avid gardeners, and they painted parks and gardens as the distinctive scenery of contemporary life. Writing from the perspective of both a distinguished art historian and a trained landscape designer, Colta Ives provides new insights not only into these essential works, but also into this extraordinarily creative period in France’s history.

Book excerpt: The meaning of a painted portrait and even its subject may be far more complex than expected, Tamar Garb reveals in this book. She charts for the first time the history of French female portraiture from its heyday in the early nineteenth century to its demise in the early twentieth century, showing how these paintings illuminate evolving social attitudes and aesthetic concerns in France over the course of the century. The author builds the discussion around six canonic works by Ingres, Manet, Cassatt, Cézanne, Picasso, and Matisse, beginning with Ingres’s idealized portrait of Mme de Sennones and ending with Matisse’s elegiac last portrait of his wife. During the hundred years that separate these works, the female portrait went from being the ideal genre for the expression of painting’s capacity to describe and embellish “nature,” to the prime locus of its refusal to do so. Picasso’s Cubism, and specifically Ma Jolie, provides the fulcrum of this shift.

Book excerpt: One of the foremost artists of 19th century France, Alexandre Cabanel (1823 - 1889), will be featured in his first exhibition at the Wallraf in Spring 2011. In cooperation with Musée Fabre in Montpellier, the Wallraf in Cologne will present over 60 works by a man who rose from the rank of a lowly carpenter's son to become court painter to Napoleon III. In order to give these graceful works by the last of the great salon painters just the right ambience, the Wallraf has secured the services of a distinguished compatriot of Cabanel: Star designer Christian Lacroix has been commissioned to design a special interior exclusively for the exhibition. Lacroix studied at the Academy of Arts in Montpellier the hometown of Cabanel and regards the painter as one of his all-time favourites. Exhibition: Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Köln (4.2-15.5.2011).

Book Impressionist Flowers

Download or read book Impressionist Flowers written by Richard Whelan and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art of the Bouquet: Impressionist Flowers is a magnificent explosion of color on the printed page. Between its covers is the loveliest of gardens: a gathering of the sensuous bouquet still lifes of the greatest French nineteenth-century painters, including Monet, Manet, Renoir, Cezanne, van Gogh, and Matisse. Encompassing both the predecessors and the immediate followers of the world's most popular group of painters, this volume collects bouquets of every season and every tone, ranging from the delicate pastels of columbines and peonies to the saturated reds and yellows of dahlias and zinnias. Drawn from public and private collections around the world, these splendid paintings are seen together for the first time in this book. Richard Whelan's introductory essay sets these works in their art-historical context, while a garden expert identifies the flowers depicted in each bouquet. Impressionist Flowers holds special appeal for art lovers, gardeners, and city dwellers who long to be gardeners.
