Book Evaluation and Application of Dye Tracing in a Karst Terrain

Download or read book Evaluation and Application of Dye Tracing in a Karst Terrain written by James William Scanlan and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this investigation was to select and evaluate in the laboratory a tracing method appropriate for use in karstic areas, and to perform field tracing studies in the south central Missouri area bounded by the cities of Rolla, St. James, and Salem in an attempt to establish existing direct flow connections between surface and subsurface waters. Fluorescein (sodium salt), Rhodamine WT, and Rhodamine B were evaluated as tracers in the laboratory and the first two dyes were employed in the field. After careful evaluation of a number of adsorbents, extracting solvents, and detection techniques, a method consisting of concentration of the dye on packets of activated carbon, extraction with a 5 per cent alkali-ethanol solvent, and detection by means of a fluorometer was selected for use in field tracing studies. Ammonium and potassium hydroxide were most appropriate for the extraction of Rhodamine WT and fluorescein, respectively. Fluorescent background material present in the streams and springs of the south central Missouri study area did not interfere with the fluorometric detection of the dyes. A direct or partially direct subsurface connection 6 to 10 miles long was established between the segment of the Dry Fork Creek located in sections 14 and 23, T.36N., R.7W., of Phelps County and the section of the creek contained between Route F and Highway 68. The rate of subsurface flow in this channel was estimated to be in the range of 1.2 to 4.1 feet per minute at a slope of 6.7 to 12.0 feet per mile"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book Tracers in Hydrology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christian Leibundgut
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2011-08-24
  • ISBN : 1119965012

Download or read book Tracers in Hydrology written by Christian Leibundgut and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracers in Hydrology and Water Research is a comprehensive overview of the application of natural and artificial tracers in hydrology and environmental research. Taking a unique approach by providing the reader with a systematic and state of the art description of natural and artificial tracers, the book also covers key analytical techniques and applications, and modern tracer methods in the context of systematic hydrology. Tracers have become a primary tool for process investigation, qualitative and quantitative system analysis and integrated resource management. This book will outline the fundamentals of the subject, and examine the latest research findings, clearly showing the entire process of tracer application through the inclusion of numerous integrated case studies. As many techniques derive from different scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics), the effort of compilation and integration into modern hydrology and environmental science research and application requires substantial continuity and experience, which certifies this group of authors. This book will be an invaluable reference not only for students and researchers within the field of Hydrology and Hydrogeology but also for engineers and other tracer techniques applying users.

Book Karst Geohazards

Download or read book Karst Geohazards written by Barry F. Beck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologists and geographers study how to develop how and where karst develops and how sinkholes form, but engineers must use this information to develop karst terrane. Over the past ten years, these multidisciplinary conferences on the applied aspects of karst hydrogeology and engineering have been successful in bringing together engineers, geologists, other scientists and government regulators who must safely establish human infrastructure on karst terrane whilst protecting the environment. The essences of these conferences has always been communciation between geologists and engineers with an emplasis on practical applications and case studies. This text contains the proceedings of the fifth conference on karst geohazards. It presents 65 papers that cover topics such as: groundwater contamination through sinkholes and the karst surface; stormwater drainage and flooding problems; and foundation considerations and improvements in karst.
