Book An Examination of the Relationship Between SERS Intensities and Surface Concentration for Pyridine Adsorbed at the Gold Aqueous Solution Interface

Download or read book An Examination of the Relationship Between SERS Intensities and Surface Concentration for Pyridine Adsorbed at the Gold Aqueous Solution Interface written by L. Stolberg and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the relationship between surface enhanced Raman scattering and surface concentrations of molecules is essential to gaining an understanding of the mechanism of SERS. At the metal/solution interface very few such studies have been reported. Here we present SERS data for pyridine adsorbed at the polycrystalline gold/aqueous solution interface, for which we also have data for surface coverage. SERS data for both smooth and rough electrode surfaces are presented. Chronocoulometry has been used to obtain reliable surface concentration data for pyridine adsorbed at the polycrystalline gold/aqueous solution interface. SERS data for both smooth and rough electrode surfaces have also been collected. Raman intensities of the 1010 cm-1 band of pyridine, measured for various bulk pyridine concentrations, track the surface concentration data very well for surface concentrations less than 3.2 x 10-10 mol cm-2. The SERS data for roughened gold electrode surfaces do not correspond well to the surface concentration data. SERS generates strong signals at cathodic potentials for which the surface concentrations are small on smooth gold electrodes. Keywords: Surface enhanced raman scattering; Pyridine on smooth gold electrodes; Electrochemical and spectroscopic data correlated; Surface roughness considered.

Stolberg and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) data are presented for pyridine adsorbed onto both smooth and roughened polycrystalline gold electrode surfaces. It was found that, for smooth surfaces, time independent (stable to within 10% of the initial value) intensities of the totally symmetric ring breathing mode of pyridine could be measured by applying slow oxidation-reduction cycles between each intensity measurement. The potential and concentration dependence of the intensity of the band was therefore determined. Independently, the isotherms for pyridine adsorption at smooth polycrystalline gold surfaces were obtained using chronocoulometry. The SERS data are compared to the surface concentration coverages and deviate, becoming inverse, above half coverage concentrations. Lastly, the effect of surface roughness on the potential and concentration dependence of pyridine SERS was studied. No correlation between the SERS data from rough electrode surfaces and adsorption isotherms determined at a smooth surface was found. Keywords: Surface enhanced Raman scattering; Gold surfaces; Correlation; Surface concentration; Electrochemical measurements; Raman intensity. (jes).

Download or read book Vibrational Spectroscopy at Electrified Interfaces written by Andrzej Wieckowski and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews the latest theory, techniques, and applications Surface vibrational spectroscopy techniques probe the structure and composition of interfaces at the molecular level. Their versatility, coupled with their non-destructive nature, enables in-situ measurements of operating devices and the monitoring of interface-controlled processes under reactive conditions. Vibrational Spectroscopy at Electrified Interfaces explores new and emerging applications of Raman, infrared, and non-linear optical spectroscopy for the study of charged interfaces. The book draws from hundreds of findings reported in the literature over the past decade. It features an internationally respected team of authors and editors, all experts in the field of vibrational spectroscopy at surfaces and interfaces. Content is divided into three parts: Part One, Nonlinear Vibrational Spectroscopy, explores properties of interfacial water, ions, and biomolecules at charged dielectric, metal oxide, and electronically conductive metal catalyst surfaces. In addition to offering plenty of practical examples, the chapters present the latest measurement and instrumental techniques. Part Two, Raman Spectroscopy, sets forth highly sensitive approaches for the detection of biomolecules at solid-liquid interfaces as well as the use of photon depolarization strategies to elucidate molecular orientation at surfaces. Part Three, IRRAS Spectroscopy (including PM-IRRAS), reports on wide-ranging systems from small fuel molecules at well-defined surfaces to macromolecular complexes that serve as the building blocks for functional interfaces in devices designed for chemical sensing and electric power generation. The Wiley Series on Electrocatalysis and Electrochemistry is dedicated to reviewing important advances in the field, exploring how these advances affect industry. The series defines what we currently know and can do with our knowledge of electrocatalysis and electrochemistry as well as forecasts where we can expect the field to be in the future.

Book Developments in Electrochemistry

Download or read book Developments in Electrochemistry written by Derek Pletcher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Fleischmann was truly one of the ‘fathers’ of modern electrochemistry having made major contributions to diverse topics within electrochemical science and technology. These include the theory and practice of voltammetry and in situ spectroscopic techniques, instrumentation, electrochemical phase formation, corrosion, electrochemical engineering, electrosynthesis and cold fusion. While intended to honour the memory of Martin Fleischmann, Developments in Electrochemistry is neither a biography nor a history of his contributions. Rather, the book is a series of critical reviews of topics in electrochemical science associated with Martin Fleischmann but remaining important today. The authors are all scientists with outstanding international reputations who have made their own contribution to their topic; most have also worked with Martin Fleischmann and benefitted from his guidance. Each of the 19 chapters within this volume begin with an outline of Martin Fleischmann’s contribution to the topic, followed by examples of research, established applications and prospects for future developments. The book is of interest to both students and experienced workers in universities and industry who are active in developing electrochemical science.

Book Adsorption of Pyridine at the Au 100 Solution Interface

Download or read book Adsorption of Pyridine at the Au 100 Solution Interface written by L. Stolberg and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronocoulometry has been used in order to quantitatively characterize the energetics of pyridine adsorption onto a gold(100) single crystal electrode surface. Over the potential region investigated ( -0.8 to +0.6 V), three orientations of the pyridine molecules on the gold surface have been observed. The pyridine orientation is strongly influenced by the electrode potential. At a positively charged surface, the pyridine assumes a vertical orientation with the nitrogen atom facing the gold surface. A limiting surface concentration corresponding to 6x10 to the -10 mol/sq.cm was determined for the vertical orientation. Reorientation from the intermediate to the vertical orientation takes the form of a phase transition. The potential of the phase transition approximately coincides with the potential of zero charge. The free energies of adsorption, electrosorption valencies, potentials and charges of the maximum adsorption were determined for the flat and the vertical orientation of pyridine. Adsorption of pyridine on the Au(100) surface is compared with the adsorption at polycrystalline Au and mercury electrodes. Keywords: Chronocoulometry, Pyridine orientation, Coverage, Free energy, Adsorption, Au, Surface, Gold.
