Book An examination of the relationship between attendance and student achievement

Download or read book An examination of the relationship between attendance and student achievement written by Paul Billeter and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every state in America has enacted compulsory school attendance laws, but truancy and dropout continue to plague school systems. Poor attendance is an attribute of the at-risk student and jeopardizes their academic success. Research links truancy and dropout to deviant behavior which can include drug use, earlier sexual activity, and criminal behavior. School systems seeking intervention methods to disrupt this cycle should employ what the research states as a holistic approach to improving attendance in at-risk students. A holistic approach includes having high-interest after school programming that has the potential for long term mentoring opportunities, parental involvement, and community participation. These efforts seek to reengage the at-risk student into the school’s programming and make them feel connected to the school again. The following project seeks to incorporate all of these elements by designing and implementing a fishing club targeted for at-risk junior high school students at Whittemore-Prescott Are School District.

Book School Attendance Relationship to Student Achievement on State Standardized Test

Download or read book School Attendance Relationship to Student Achievement on State Standardized Test written by Dawn Mikus and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research was conducted to see if there was a relationship between school attendance and student achievement. The study looked at 69 fourth graders in an urban elementary school. The research findings answer the question, "Does school attendance relate to student achievement as perceived on the Communication Arts MAP test and the Math MAP test scores?" The research was conducting by doing a correlation analysis on the students' school attendance percentage for the 2012-2013 school year and their 2013 Communication Arts MAP test scores and their 2013 Math MAP test scores. The results of this study show that there is a positive relationship between school attendance percentages and student achievement based on the Communication Arts MAP test and the Math MAP test. The conclusion based on this research is that school attendance has a significant effect on student achievement. Therefore, school districts should further educate their parents and community on the importance of regular attendance. There should also be a better form of tracking chronically absent students and providing support of them."

Book The Correlation Between Student Attendance and Student Achievement on Standardized Test

Download or read book The Correlation Between Student Attendance and Student Achievement on Standardized Test written by Samantha Mott and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between student attendance and student achievement on standardized tests. The study group was ninety- two students of a seventh grade class in an urban school district. A study was conducted to analyze if there is a direct relationship between a student's attendance and achievement on standardized tests. Individual attendance percentages and test scores from the 2014 MAP Communication Arts and Mathematics were collected for each student for the 2012-2013 academic year. Using A Statistic Package (ASP), data was entered into the system to test the correlation between student attendance and student achievement. The analysis resulted in a significant, positive relationship between student attendance and student achievement in the MAP Mathematics test. However, the analysis depicted no significant relationship between student attendance and student achievement in the MAP Communication Arts test. Based on the results, schools should increase the communication with parents about the importance of attendance and student achievement in education.

Book excerpt: In Absent from School, Gottfried and Hutt offer a comprehensive and timely resource for educators and policy makers seeking to understand the scope, impact, and causes of chronic student absenteeism. The editors present a series of studies by leading researchers from a variety of disciplines that address which students are missing school and why, what roles schools themselves play in contributing to or offsetting patterns of absenteeism, and ways to assess student attendance for purposes of school accountability. The contributors examine school-based initiatives that focus on a range of issues, including transportation, student health, discipline policies, and protections for immigrant students, as well as interventions intended to improve student attendance. Only in the past two or three years has chronic absenteeism become the focus of attention among policy makers, civil rights advocates, and educators. Absent from School provides the first critical, systematic look at research that can inform and guide those who are working to ensure that every child is in school and learning every day.

This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on two crucial issues that need to be addressed as a matter of urgency by universities in the Arab region, namely (a) conducting independent assessments of the quality of their teaching, research, administration, governance, and planning; and (b) determining the relevance of their teaching, research, and societal impacts. Although well-established around the world in manufacturing industries and private-sector service industries, including the research and commercialisation arms of the major universities and research institutes, it is only in recent years that quality-assurance (QA) assessments have started to be applied to most aspects education. Several Arab universities are adopting various forms of QA but some variants are little more than bureaucratic “box-ticking” exercises with minimal commitment by staff to the ultimate aim of continuing self-improvement. This book will be of interest to senior management at faculty and departmental level and above in all Arab universities specifically, and more generally in Islamic institutions of higher education. Senior management in other universities, especially in the developing world will benefit from its analyses and recommendations.

Book Assessing Teacher Quality

Download or read book Assessing Teacher Quality written by Sean Kelly and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent educational reforms have promoted accountability systems which attempt to identify teacher effects on student outcomes and hold teachers accountable for producing learning gains. But in the complex world of classrooms, it may be difficult to attribute “success” or “failure” to teachers. In this timely collection, leading education scholars challenge market-based models of school improvement and argue that merely holding teachers accountable for scores on end-of-the-year exams will not lead to educational improvement. The authors show why, in addition to test performance, a close examination of instructional processes and school context are needed in order to truly understand teacher effects and improve learning in our nation’s classrooms. Book Features: A conceptual framework, grounded in studies of real schools and teaching, for an alternative vision of educational reform. An interdisciplinary perspective with interpretive chapters covering the most important research dealing with teacher effects on learning and achievement. A balanced assessment of the promises and pitfalls of teacher accountability.

Book An Examination of Student Mobility in U S Public Schools

Download or read book An Examination of Student Mobility in U S Public Schools written by Kailey Spencer and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student mobility--the event of students moving into and out of schools--is prevalent and has established negative relationships with both academic and non-cognitive outcomes for mobile students and the classrooms and schools that serve them. Despite this, there is a dearth of research examining student mobility, and, in particular, only a sparse literature that allows for causal interpretations of the causes and consequences of student mobility. The research presented in this dissertation aims to address some of the gaps in the literature on student mobility. Chapter one of the dissertation presents a framework that defines student mobility and outlines the relationships between causes and consequences of mobility within different contexts. Chapter two uses the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten cohort to explore student- and school-level correlates of mobility, as well as relationships between mobility and academic achievement. In chapters three and four, I empirically examine student mobility in the context of charter schools. In chapter three I use data from the Evaluation of Charter School Impacts to estimate the effect of charter school admissions and attendance on student mobility. Chapter four uses statewide data from Colorado to explore student mobility within the traditional and charter school sectors. Together I find that: 1) rates of mobility vary based on student background characteristics and indicators of school quality, 2) students who won admissions to charter middle schools were less likely to experience mobility than their peers who lost admissions lotteries, 3) mobility rates in Colorado's charter schools are higher than in TPSs in the state, both descriptively and after controlling for school characteristics, and 4) the motivation for student mobility and the relative quality of students' sending and receiving schools are important moderators of mobility's relationship with student achievement.
