This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AbstractAN EXAMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAM PREADMISSION GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA), AMERICAN COLLEGE TEST (ACT) SCORES AND DEGREE COMPLETION AND SUCCESS ON THE NATIONAL COUNCIL LICENSURE EXAMINATION-REGISTERED NURSES (NCLEX-RN).Associate Degree Nursing programs in Alabama have more applicants than available spots, making them highly competitive programs to gain entry. The community colleges that offer these programs are facing many challenges including performance-based funding, open-enrollment policies, and high attrition rates. Given these conditions, program directors institute an application grading process in an effort to select applicants whom the programs believe is most likely to graduate and to be successful on the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. This study examines the relationship of the American College Testing (ACT),) and students pre-admissions GPAs in an attempt to interpret which academic factor makes a better predictor of student success. The study revealed that GPA was the only statistically significant indicator for student success in both program completion and NCLEX-RN pass on the first attempt. Keywords: Student Success, Alabama Community College Nursing, ACT Scores, GPA.

Download or read book The Relationship of ASSET Test Scores Sex and Race to Success in the Developmental Prorams the Associate Degree Level Programs and the Associate Degree Programs in Business Health and Technology at MATC written by Keith J. Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A series of studies were conducted at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) to determine the relationship of basic skills assessment test scores, sex, and race to student success for the following groups of fall 1985 students: 229 developmental studies (Crossover Program); 501 associate degree level students; 66 business and graphic arts students; 74 health students; and 49 technology students. Using multiple regression analyses, the study revealed: (1) reading and numerical scores were good predictors of success for Crossover students, while language test scores were less useful; (2) for Crossover students, there was no statistical evidence of a relationship between race and GPA, although there was a relationship between sex and GPA; (3) among associate degree students, language test scores and race appeared to have little relationship to grade point average (GPA), reading and numerical scores appeared to contribute to GPA, and males tended to get lower GPA's than females when all other measurable variables were equal; and (4) when the three groups of vocational/technical students were examined as a whole, reading scores, numerical scores, and sex were related to GPA."--ERIC.

Book Predicting Long Term College Success Through Degree Completion Using ACT R Composite Score ACT Benchmarks and High School Grade Point Average ACT Research Report Series 2012 5

Download or read book Predicting Long Term College Success Through Degree Completion Using ACT R Composite Score ACT Benchmarks and High School Grade Point Average ACT Research Report Series 2012 5 written by Justine Radunzel and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compared the effectiveness of ACT[R] Composite score and high school grade point average (HSGPA) for predicting long-term college success. Outcomes included annual progress towards a degree (based on cumulative credit-bearing hours earned), degree completion, and cumulative grade point average (GPA) at 150% of normal time to degree completion (year 6 and year 3 for four- and two-year institutions, respectively). The utility of the individual ACT College Readiness Benchmarks for predicting long-term college success was also evaluated. Data for this study included over 190,000 ACT-tested students who enrolled in college as first-time entering students in fall, 2000 through 2006. Over 100 total two- and four-year institutions were represented. Hierarchical logistic models were used to estimate institution-specific probabilities of college success based on ACT scores and HSGPA. First-year college GPA was also included as a predictor in the path analysis models. Accuracy and success rates were calculated using the distributions of ACT scores and HSGPA for each institution's approximate applicant pool; rates were then summarized across institutions. Direct and indirect effects of ACT score, HSGPA, and first-year academic performance on subsequent college outcomes were also examined. Results were disaggregated by institution type. Both ACT Composite score and HSGPA were effective for predicting long-term college success at both four- and two-year institutions. Across the outcomes, test scores increased prediction accuracy over that for HSGPA alone. ACT scores and HSGPA were primarily indirectly related to subsequent college outcomes (through first-year college GPA). The ACT Benchmarks were also found to be useful for predicting long-term college success, providing further validity evidence for using them as measures of college readiness. (Contains 20 tables, 19 figures and 15 footnotes.).

Book Differential Effects on Student Demographic Groups of Using ACT College Readiness Assessment Composite Score Act Benchmarks and High School Grade Point Average for Predicting Long Term College Success Through Degree Completion ACT Research Report Series 2013 5

Download or read book Differential Effects on Student Demographic Groups of Using ACT College Readiness Assessment Composite Score Act Benchmarks and High School Grade Point Average for Predicting Long Term College Success Through Degree Completion ACT Research Report Series 2013 5 written by Justine Radunzel and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we evaluated the differential effects on racial/ethnic, family income, and gender groups of using ACTʼ College Readiness Assessment Composite score and high school grade point average (HSGPA) for predicting long-term college success. Outcomes included annual progress towards a degree (based on cumulative credit-bearing hours earned), degree completion, and cumulative grade point average at 150% of normal time to degree completion (year 6 and year 3 for four- and two-year institutions, respectively). We also evaluated the utility of the individual ACT College Readiness Benchmarks for predicting college success for each demographic group. Data for this study included over 190,000 ACT-tested students who enrolled in college as first-time entering students in fall, 2000 through 2006. Over 100 total two- and four-year institutions were represented. We used hierarchical logistic models to estimate institutionspecific probabilities of college success for all students and each demographic group based on their ACT test scores and HSGPA. Accuracy and success rates for each student group were calculated at total-group optimal selection values using the distributions of ACT Composite score and HSGPA for each institution's approximate applicant pool; these rates were then summarized across institutions. Results were disaggregated by institution type. Total-group predictions based on ACT Composite score generally overestimated the long-term college success of underrepresented minority students (by, at most, 0.11 across outcomes), lower-income students (by, at most, 0.07), and male students (by, at most, 0.13) and, to a lesser extent, underestimated the success of White students (by, at most, 0.04), higherincome students (by, at most, 0.07), and female students (by, at most, 0.10). The degree of differential prediction by gender was less pronounced for the progress to degree and degree completion outcomes than for achieving levels of year 6/year 3 cumulative grade point average (GPA). There was minimal differential prediction by family income for achieving levels of year 6/year 3 cumulative GPA. For racial/ethnic and family income groups, there was greater over and under prediction associated with using HSGPA than with using ACT Composite score. The opposite was true for gender. Differential prediction by student demographic groups was also observed at the ACT College Readiness Benchmark scores with the direction of the differential prediction being consistent with that observed when ACT Composite score and/or HSGPA was used. For each student demographic group, test scores increased prediction accuracy over that for HSGPA. Typical percentages of correct classifications at total-group optimal selection values were generally higher for underrepresented minority and lower-income students than for White and higher-income students; these percentages were similar for female and male students. Contrary to prior claims made, results from this study suggest that minority and lower income students are not disadvantaged by using ACT Composite score or the ACT Benchmark scores to predict long-term college success. This finding held across multiple college outcomes at both two- and four-year institutions. Tables and figures are included in appendices 1-6.

Book Identifying the Value of the ACT Score as a Predictor of Student Success in Respiratory Care Radiography and Nursing at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College

Download or read book Identifying the Value of the ACT Score as a Predictor of Student Success in Respiratory Care Radiography and Nursing at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College written by Rebecca Jon Parrott-Robbins and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate, by utilizing data obtained from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) PeopleSoft database, whether the American College Testing (ACT) assessment was a predictor of student success for students who had graduated from respiratory, radiography, and nursing programs at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC). In addition, the study sought to determine whether the pre-program grade point average was a predictor of student success. The analysis was based on existing data for three random samples of 100 students each drawn from graduates of respiratory, radiography, and nursing programs for the years 2000 to 2005 for a total of 300 participants. ACT composite scores and pre-program grade point averages (GPAs) at the time of entrance along with the students' final GPAs at the end of the program of study were obtained from the college's database. A multiple regression analysis was performed, with final GPAs as the response variable and ACT scores and pre-program GPAs as predictors. Also, in terms of evaluating the individual contribution of each predictor, the part correlations were analyzed. The analyses were performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 16. The findings of the study indicate that the pre-program grade point averages were a stronger predictor of the final GPAs than the ACT scores. In addition, the ACT scores were not shown to be a significant predictor of the final grade point averages, after controlling for the pre-program GPAs that were recorded at the time of entry into the programs of study.
