This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of the Principles of the French Revolution In the long train of revolutions which form the history of empires, there is not one to be compared with the French. All others were only local and momentary shocks, the effect of which was confined to the transfer of power from one hand to another; or, at most, to a change of the form of a Government. In it foreigners took no interest, any further than as they were connected with the leaders of one party or the other; and whatever was the issue, the agitations of one country shook not the constitution of other states. The French Revolution hath taken, from its origin, a different character. Without grievances, without pretexts, without visible leaders, in the midst of a profound peace, and under a government the most mild, a nation hath been entirely convulsed by a sudden change of opinions. The most powerful monarchy in Europe hath given way to a philosophical system, the principles of which, being applicable to every people, menace every government. The plan of this astonishing revolution embraces the universe: all nations are invited to enjoy its blessings, or to partake of its disasters. Hitherto, this system hath not the suffrage of experience in its favour; and though it were certain that posterity would reap the fruits of the crimes and calamities of the present generation, their reiteration justness would not absolve the innovators from the dreadful evils to which they have condemned us. The hope however of such happiness to come is forbidden: the revolution promises to our descendants only what it hath given to ourselves. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons of the French Revolution, 1789-1872 It is lowering to the pride of human reason, that such a profession of principles should be really descriptive of the opinions and purposes of large and influential classes of the French nation. It is melancholy to know that they should be maintained not merely by small sects like the Anabaptists of the sixteenth century, or the Mormons of Utah, but by powerful bodies of the leading nation of Conti neutal Europe Those who enter the lists in Opposition to the champions of these theories, will find that they have to deal with antagonists not only inspired with a wild enthusiasm, but gifted with great ingenuity and ability, enlisted in defence of these extravagant doctrines When once men desert the guide of experience, when they cease to consider human society, as built upon the certain principles existing in human nature itself, and when they suppose that they can reconstruct the world in accordance with their own views, there is no prac tical absurdity which their lively imaginations will not coin sophistries to defend. Experience never teaches them, the ruin of a thousand abortive schemes only stimulates them to construct the thousand and first, and they are ever ready to stake the very exist ence of society on the success of the last new scheme. Book The Story of the French Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the French Revolution Classic Reprint written by E. BELFORT. BAX and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the French Revolution The following Sketch of the course of the French Revolution was originally published during 1889 in serial form in Justice, the weekly organ of the Social Demo' cratic Federation. It has been revised, corrected, and, in some parts, added to, for the present re-issue. It need scarcely be said that it in no way pretends to be a com plete history of the great political, social, and intellectual movement it describes. The present volume is designed primarily as a guide to those who, not having the time to study larger works on the subject, yet wish during these centennial years to have in a small compass a con nected description of the main events of the French Revolution, more especially from the point Of View of modern Socialism. It is undeniable that there are many Englishmen who would indignantly repudiate any'asper sions on their education for whom the French Revolution means little more than the destruction of one institution called the Bastille, the erection of another institution called theguillotine, and the establishment of the Napo leonic Empire on the ruins of both. They have no idea Of the complex forces, economical, speculative, and po litical, which manifested themselves in the succession of crises (scarcely, indeed, of the existence of the crises themselves) which took place between the assembling of the states-general in 1789, _and the suppression of the Babmuf conspiracy in 1796. Download or read book History of the French Revolution Vol 1 written by F. Maclean Rowan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1: Its Causes and Consequences In the little work here presented to the public, the faults of the people are more insisted upon than those of the rulers, because it is written for the former, not for the latter; and because, if the latter have a lesson to learn from history, the former have a still greater one, and one that, if well learned by them, will suffice for both. Despotism and tyranny are almost impossible evils in our day, but the love of liberty is so great, that the important task now is to enlighten and to regulate that love, so that, in their headlong career for the attainment of a good, the people place not themselves in the way of the very evils they seek to avoid. They have to learn, that for nations as for individuals, happiness depends upon virtue and wisdom, and that therefore liberty, which is happiness, does not mean merely freedom from restraint, and cannot be attained through crimes. Book The Coming of the French Revolution

Download or read book The Coming of the French Revolution written by Georges Lefebvre and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coming of the French Revolution remains essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of this great turning point in the formation of the modern world. First published in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, and suppressed by the Vichy government, this classic work explains what happened in France in 1789, the first year of the French Revolution. Georges Lefebvre wrote history "from below"--a Marxist approach. Here, he places the peasantry at the center of his analysis, emphasizing the class struggles in France and the significant role they played in the coming of the revolution. Eloquently translated by the historian R. R. Palmer and featuring an introduction by Timothy Tackett that provides a concise intellectual biography of Lefebvre and a critical appraisal of the book, this Princeton Classics edition continues to offer fresh insights into democracy, dictatorship, and insurrection.
