This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that improving the quality of education is priority internationally; and teachers are expected to engage in Continuing Professional Development programmes to improve their practices. Research into teachers' CPD, id est what works well and what needs to change to maximise teacher learning, is therefore an important field of inquiry. In the context of Oman, investment in education, including teachers' CPD, has increased substantially since the 1970s. Despite this, emerging research examining CPD structures and possibilities (mainly for teachers of English), has identified a number of limitations of the existing CPD provision in Oman. Although research on teachers' CPD is increasing, there is no research on PE teachers. Questions thus remain about the nature and effectiveness of CPD provision for PE teachers. To address this gap, the present study sought to examine the nature, quality, and perceived effectiveness of continuing professional development opportunities for PE teachers in the Sultanate of Oman. A variety of methods were employed to answer the following main research question which was examine the nature, quality, and perceived effectiveness of continuing professional development opportunities for physical education teachers in the sultanate of Oman. Three studies have contributed to answering this research question. The first study relied on a teacher online CPD survey. The second study examined the experiences and perceptions of 11 PE teachers working in post-basic schools in Muscat. A semi-structured interview was implemented. The third study, also employed a semi-structured interview, focusing on CPD providers from four different organisations in Muscat. The overall finding of this thesis is that there are limited opportunities available for PE teachers in Oman. The formal, government-funded opportunities are not always appropriately targeted and are repetitive in nature. Although teachers reported engaging in some informal learning, this was neither supported nor encouraged in their school. Further research is needed in order to examine the impact on student learning of PE teachers in schools undertaking CPD programmes. Also, an experimental approach could be adopted to provide robust evidence of impact on teacher and student learning.

Book Experienced Elementary Physical Educators Perceptions and Insights on Professional Development and the Teaching learning Process

Download or read book Experienced Elementary Physical Educators Perceptions and Insights on Professional Development and the Teaching learning Process written by Ann-Catherine Sullivan and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent influx of Federal, State and Local agencies have developed agendas which focus on improving the status of teaching in America's schools. Much of the thrust of the agendas has focused on developing professional development programs for educators. Teachers' stages of development literature indicate that individual's professional development needs change over time and across contexts. In this light, one model of professional development will not meet the needs of all educators. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to describe the professional development opportunities of four experienced elementary physical educators and the extent to which these experiences informed the teaching-learning process. The secondary purpose of the study was to attain the experienced teachers' perspectives on the impact of individual professional development on student learning and thirdly to identify the constraints and supports for professional development opportunities. The qualitative data collection methods included: teacher interviews, observation of teaching, collected documents, and e-mail communication with the four participants. The quantitative data included participants' responses on the Teachers' Concerns Questionnaire-Physical Education (McBride, 1993) and on the Perceived Needs Questionnaire-Physical Education (Conkle, 1995). Data analysis procedures included questionnaire mean scores, constant comparative methods, and document analysis. Findings indicated that individual experiences and life cycles may have an effect on the concerns of teachers as well as the types of professional development pursue. Further, the school context and district support impacts the types of opportunities teachers explore. Specifically there is a lack of alignment between state and local professional development policies and the professional development needs of elementary physical educators. Many of the professional development "best practices" such as accommodating for individual differences, conducting development over a sustained period of time, and implementation of follow-up activities were not implemented in practice. Further, the topics of school building level professional development sessions were not relevant for the participants. Thus, mandated attendance at opportunities provided within the district did not meet the professional development needs of the participants. Few instances were found in which knowledge gained through professional development informed teaching practice. The participants described the development of a network of physical education peers who assisted with providing support and decreasing isolation.

Book Ohio Physical Educators Perceived Professional Development Needs

Download or read book Ohio Physical Educators Perceived Professional Development Needs written by Rhonda Hovatter and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes research designed to investigate the influence of select teacher and school characteristics on the perceived professional development needs of in-service physical educators in the state of Ohio. Data were collected using a self-report survey instrument comprised of the Professional Development Needs Questionnaire-Physical Education (Conkle, 1994), and the Teacher Concerns Questionnaire-Physical Education (McBride, 1993). Additional demographic data were collected and categorized according to grade level taught (elementary, middle school, high school, or some combination), and school setting/location (urban/inner city, suburban/small city, and rural). Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients were analyzed to determine the strength of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Multiple regression using stepwise method was further conducted to determine the degree to which a teacher's stage of concern, grade level taught and school setting influenced the perceived professional development needs. Results indicated that participants' perceived professional development needs were driven primarily by issues of concern rather than teaching situation (e.g., grade level taught; school setting/location).

Book Perceived Professional Development Needs of General and Adapted Physical Education Teachers

Download or read book Perceived Professional Development Needs of General and Adapted Physical Education Teachers written by Scott S. Rosenfeld and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students with disabilities should receive adapted physical education (APE) services from a qualified APE and! or a general physical education (GPE) teacher. Current research, however, has shown that many teachers of students with disabilities feel unprepared and lack the confidence to teach these students. To ensme that students with disabilities receive appropriate and quality physical education, APE and GPE teachers should receive relevant professional development. The pmpose of this study was to determine the perceived professional development needs of APE and GPE teachers regarding working with students who have disabilities. A total of 13 8 teachers (APE = 42, GPE = 45, and dual roles in APE/GPE =51) completed an online survey to rank and rate 12 professional development content areas. Results indicated that all of the teachers combined felt they need professional development most in the areas of knowledge of disabilities and teaching and instructional strategies. APE teachers felt that behavior management and teaching and instructional strategies were the most important professional development content areas, while GPE teachers felt that knowledge of disabilities, inclusion techniques, and teaching and instructional strategies were the most important professional development content areas.

Book Physical Education in Further Education

Download or read book Physical Education in Further Education written by Elizabeth Jackson and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This occasional paper describes the development of physical education (PE) in further education (FE) in Great Britain since 1945, and suggests the need for a more systematic approach to curriculum development in this area. Section I reviews the development of PE in FE and identifies major issues and possible future developments. The document traces the growth of the subject from its original recreative/competitive basis through its specific courses, health education, its service and community roles, vocational preparation, and leisure courses. The complexity of tasks now confronting PE teachers, the paper argues, makes staff development a critical issue. Section II of the paper, by describing a possible approach to curriculum development, is a staff development document for those interested in innovation in this area. Three main categories of PE work are postulated: specialist, servicing/educational, and recreative. The document presents these categories in an operational model of curriculum development and describes the implications and skills arising from the model. Rationale, constraints, provision, and evaluation make up the suggested framework that surrounds the three main categories of work. The paper concludes with the hope that those involved in PE curriculum will find this model a useful introduction. (KC)
