Book An Examination of Teachers Perception of Collaboration Within Mathematics Professional Learning Communities

Download or read book An Examination of Teachers Perception of Collaboration Within Mathematics Professional Learning Communities written by Noel Vargas and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this causal comparative study was to explore the extent to which teacher perceptions of collaboration within mathematics Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) may be a differentiating factor between schools identified as 'high performing' versus 'low performing' based on student achievement level on the Texas mathematics assessment. The elementary schools used in this study served a majority of low socioeconomic status (SES) and Hispanic students. Prior qualitative research revealed that collaboration is an element that distinguishes high performing from low performing schools. However, a gap in the research literature is the lack of a quantitative analysis between teacher collaboration and academic achievement in Texas. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to find empirical data that may support a relationship between teacher collaboration within mathematics PLCs and mathematics achievement. The research question intended to determine to what extent was there a difference between teacher perceptions of teacher collaboration within mathematics PLCs in elementary schools identified as 'high performing' versus 'low performing' based on their achievement level on the Texas mathematics assessment, serving a majority of low SES and Hispanic students. The alternate hypothesis intended to find a significant relationship between the two variables. The findings of this study demonstrated a significance difference between teacher collaboration in high performing when compared with the low performing schools. The significance of the study advanced the understanding of the impact of teacher collaboration on the mathematics student achievement for Hispanic and low SES elementary students.

Book The Perceptions of Principals and Math Teachers in Successful Comprehensive 5A High Schools on the Role of the Professional Learning Community

Download or read book The Perceptions of Principals and Math Teachers in Successful Comprehensive 5A High Schools on the Role of the Professional Learning Community written by Christie Branson Whitbeck and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As accountability for public schools continues to increase, educators are continually seeking the best practices in order to assure successful academic achievement, particularly in mathematics. This study focused on the popular reform movement of establishing professional learning communities (PLCs) within the schools, and combined it with a frame of reference from the math teaching context. The purpose of this study was to gain the perceptions of principals and math teachers in successful 5A high schools about the role of the professional learning communities in their schools. For several decades, educators have been trained and continue to be trained on the effective use of professional learning communities in all levels of education. Utilizing a PLC concept requires additional efforts by the school leadership and the teachers. By gaining insight into the perceptions of those in the field, the researcher was able to find common themes, analyze them, and develop recommendations for practice and further research. This qualitative research focused on reviews of literature beginning with early reform movements of forty years ago, which spawned the PLC movement to practitioners and researchers today. Participants were selected from highs schools with a Recognized or higher rating by the Texas Education Agency, and that were also acknowledged for their high performance in mathematics. Three large Texas high schools were chosen, and interviews conducted with twelve participants, three principals and nine teachers. The perspective was narrowed to the field of mathematics because this subject continues to be challenging for so many students as reflected on Texas state scores. After analysis of interviews with the three principals and nine math teachers, five common themes emerged from the data. Structure/time, leadership, collaboration, effective components of the PLC, and professional development were analyzed in the findings. It was evident that these educators saw value in the process of working within a professional learning community and advocate the continuation and development of such a work structure within their schools. The perceptions of these participants validated the research found in the literature supporting PLC's as an appropriate school reform strategy.

Book The Evolution of Views from a Teacher Perspective about Participation in a Mathematics Professional Learning Community

Download or read book The Evolution of Views from a Teacher Perspective about Participation in a Mathematics Professional Learning Community written by Sandra Frechette and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Professional Learning Communities have been shown to be effective vehicles of change for fostering school communities that value collective learning with the aim of improving school success. Multiple studies have focused on the characteristics of successful collaborations and supports for their implementation and sustainability. However, few studies have illustrated how these collaborations evolve over time, especially from a teacher perspective. This qualitative research uses a case study methodology to illustrate how teachers, in a mathematics professional learning community, changed their views about the purpose of their collaboration in a four-year project. Teacher responses from end-of-year interviews were used to conduct a constant comparative approach. A qualitative and quantitative analysis yielded the discovery of themes that show an evolution, in three phases, of teachers' views about the nature and purpose of the professional learning community: a) the conversation, b) the collaboration with trust and c) the self-reflection via community collaboration. The study provides an analysis, through the lens of the communities of practice theory, that illustrates the progression of social learning through the development of teacher community. The results provide recommendations to inform educational leaders in the development of professional learning communities in mathematics and more broadly. " --

Download or read book The Relationship Between Professional Learning Community Collaboration and Student Achievement written by Tameka Deshone Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Professional learning communities (PLCs), a relatively new initiative, have shifted to the forefront as viable practicable plans for sustaining and increasing school-wide achievement. The purpose of this quantitative study was to (a) determine how professional learning coaches, instructional facilitators, and teachers perceive the level of collaboration while participating in professional learning communities and (b) how that collaboration impacts academic achievement. Pearson product moment correlations, descriptive analyses, and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze teacher perception data from the Professional Learning Community Effectiveness Survey. Though results revealed that perceptions of PLC characteristic were not significantly positively correlated to academic achievement, significant relationships did exit between the characteristics themselves, which could provide a platform for increasing student achievement in the future.

Book excerpt: With the future of education being disrupted and the onset of day-to-day uncertainties and challenges that have to be solved quickly, teachers are now turning to professional development communities/support communities where they can share and learn about effective practices to use in the classroom. While transitioning to blended or online learning and keeping up with the technological advances in education, these communities provide an essential backbone for teachers to rely on for support and updated knowledge on what educational practices are being utilized, how they are working, and what solutions have been found for the ever-changing climate of education. Research on the benefits and use of these communities, as well as on the latest educational practices, is essential in teacher development and student learning in the current culture of a rapidly changing educational environment. The Research Anthology on Facilitating New Educational Practices Through Communities of Learning contains hand-selected, previously published research that provides information on the communities of learning that teachers are currently involved in to seek the latest educational practices. The chapters cover the context of these communities, the benefits, and an overview of how this support is a necessary tool in today’s practices of teaching and learning. While highlighting topics such as learning communities, teacher development, mentoring, and virtual communities, this book is essential for inservice and preservice teachers, administrators, teacher educators, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students who are interested in how communities of practice tie into professional development, teacher learning, and the online shift in teaching.

Book Mathematics Teachers and Professional Learning Communities Understanding Professional Development in Collaborative Settings

Download or read book Mathematics Teachers and Professional Learning Communities Understanding Professional Development in Collaborative Settings written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the recent increased emphasis on mathematics professional development (MPD), studies have attempted to identify a set of features that are commonly part of successful MPD programs. While recommendations that professional development should be collaborative, sustained, and practice-based are common across all subjects, MPD is often highlighted by activities that address the specific needs of mathematics teachers. Professional learning communities (PLC) are also considered valuable for the growth of teachers. However, PLCs only provide a general guideline for how teachers can make meaningful changes to instruction, regardless of subject. In order for PLCs to be used as a form of MPD, more work needs to be done to identify the extent to which mathematics teachers in PLCs engage in the activities that improve their content and pedagogical knowledge and, ultimately, improve student achievement. Based on literature on teacher collaboration, PLCs, and MPD initiatives, a conceptual framework was developed to describe the collaborative work of mathematics teachers. This framework was used to guide the design of this study and the analysis of data. The study described here employed case study methodology to investigate two teams of teachers attempting to implement principles of PLCs as part of a district-wide intervention. The goal of this study was to discover both teamsÃØâ'Ơâ"Ø success in implementing these principles and to what extent they engage in activities that are commonly found in effective MPD. To do this, the teams were observed during their set meeting time and individual teachers took part in interviews and surveys to further explicate the team dynamic as well as individualÃØâ'Ơâ"Øs dispositions and values. The teams provided two distinct cases of the collaborative work of mathematics teachers. One team had strong collaborative norms yet did not engage in the activities commonly found in effective MPD programs while the other team struggled with i.
