Book An Examination of Sources and Multidimensionality of Self confidence in Collegiate Athletes

Download or read book An Examination of Sources and Multidimensionality of Self confidence in Collegiate Athletes written by Moe Machida and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships among selected personality and social factors, sources and different types of confidence in collegiate athletes, using the sport-confidence model (Vealey, 1986; Vealey & Chase, 2008) as a guiding framework. Different types of confidence and sources were found to be associated with different factors. For example, task-involving motivational climate positively predicted athletes' selection of both controllable and uncontrollable sources of confidence, while ego-involving motivational climate did not appear as a significant predictor of both types of sources. Several dimensions of perfectionism(i.e. personal standards, doubts about actions, perceived coach pressure, concern over mistake) appeared as strong predictors of different types of confidence. The results also indicated a link between controllable sources of confidence and the level of confidence. Overall, the results from the present study supported the multidimensionality of athletes' confidence. Practical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Book Physical Self concept and Athletic Identity Among Former Collegiate Athletes

Download or read book Physical Self concept and Athletic Identity Among Former Collegiate Athletes written by Jennifer K. Shannon and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined physical self-concept, global self-esteem, and athletic identity among former collegiate athletes. 308 former Division 1 NCAA collegiate athletes participated in the study. This study replicated findings that physical self-worth demonstrates a positive relation with global self-esteem. Athletic identity was shown to mediate the relation between physical self-concept and global self-esteem for former collegiate athletes. Athletic identity was also shown to mediate the relation between physical activity and physical self-concept. Athletic identity did not serve as a moderating variable for the entire sample, but was shown to moderate the relation between physical activity and physical self-concept for those no longer participating in their collegiate sport and those no longer identifying as an athlete. Athletic identity and global self-esteem demonstrated age-related differences. These findings suggest that there is some maintenance of athletic identity for many former collegiate athletes, and that identity remains influential in its association with physical self-concept.

Book Self efficacy in Collegiate Athletes During a Maximum Strength Test

Download or read book Self efficacy in Collegiate Athletes During a Maximum Strength Test written by Chelsea Marie Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present research study was to explore self-efficacy and its relationship to performance outcomes in a maximum strength test in a weight room setting. The secondary purpose was to determine which source of self-efficacy information contributes most to efficacy beliefs. Thirty-six collegiate soccer players filled out a self-efficacy scale prior to their one repetition maximum back squat strength test. The self-efficacy scale asked the participants how confident they were in beating their predicted max (rating scale). A qualitative approach was also used asking what influenced their self-efficacy ratings the most. Results revealed that athletes who had high self-efficacy did not necessarily perform better on their maximum strength test. Therefore, there was no significant relationship between self-efficacy and performance. The qualitative results revealed that physiological states were the most influential source of self-efficacy information. In addition gender differences were discovered. Implications of the study, as well as directions for future research are discussed.

Cermak and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of the current study was threefold. The main purpose was to investigate the effects of motivational factors on self-handicapping (SH) in collegiate athletes. Second, this study aimed to examine the relationship between self-esteem and SH. Lastly, this study sought to explore gender differences in SH in athletes. Method: Collegiate athletes (N = 43) from the softball and baseball teams at a Midwestern Division I university completed surveys at three different time points. During the first assessment, athletes completed a battery of questionnaires assessing their trait SH, perceptions of the motivational climate, dispositional goal orientations, self-esteem, and ratings of game importance. The second and third assessments were determined by the athletes' game importance ratings. During assessments two and three, athletes were given the opportunity to claim impediments and coaches completed assessments of practice effort. Results: Initial multiple regression analyses revealed sport to be the only significant predictor for claimed SH. Thus, all subsequent analyses were conducted for softball and baseball separately. Mastery climate significantly predicted the number of claimed impediments (p

This book was released on 2013 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The longstanding question within sports and baseball is what separates the good athletes from the great ones. The purpose of this study was to look at the role self-efficacy and self-confidence play in the success of athletes. This study was solely based on the coaches' perspective of their athletes. Three coaches who coach at different levels (high school, college, professional) were interviewed for this study. All of these coaches have a proven track record for success and have had the opportunity to work with thousands of players. These coaches, along with what research suggests, give us an interesting perspective on what separates good from great high school, college, and professional baseball players. Although self-efficacy and self-confidence are important, there are other factors that contribute to the success of athletes at each level respectively.
