Book An Examination of the Differences in the Predictors of Interpersonal Violence for Males and Females

Download or read book An Examination of the Differences in the Predictors of Interpersonal Violence for Males and Females written by Terhi Virginia Tatjana Telsavaara and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History and statistics have shown us that intimate partner violence (IPV) has generally been divided between male perpetrators and female victims. Theories on why males batter are prevalent in the literature, but less so for their female counterparts. Recent statistical trends and law enforcement records indicate that women are being arrested at an increasing rate for this traditionally male crime. In light of this increase in female offending, the current study seeks to understand whether the correlates that are true for violent crime in general effect male and female perpetrators of intimate partner violence differently. Literature suggests that the reasons for male and female IPV are different. If the theories of explanation for male and female offending are varied then perhaps the correlates of crime are also different. This research examines 628 offenders arrested for intimate partner violence in Charlotte, NC. The participants consist of 539 males and 83 females. The incidents in question occurred from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2003, and were collected using the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Depm1ment computer data software KBCOPS. The project examines common correlates of age, race, prior offending and victimization, location of violent incident, and the influence of alcohol/drugs on the level of harm cause by the offender to the victim. The prediction is that these correlates do not uniformly predict male and female offenders' level of assault.

Book Healing From Violence

Download or read book Healing From Violence written by Christauria Welland, PsyD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2007-11-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the 2000 Census, Latinos accounted for 12.5% of the US population, or 35.3 million residents-the fastest growing population in the United States. The influence of this large and growing demographic can be seen throughout every academic discipline in the numerous books, journals, and societies on multicultural assessment, counseling, and research that have begun to appear. However, one area of inquiry remains largely unexplored; domestic violence within Latino families. Although it appears that such violence occurs as frequently in Latino families as in Caucasian families, little research has been done on this topic and very few counseling programs explicitly developed for Latino families currently exist. Healing from Violence fills this void. Drawing on a research study of 150 Latino men who completed a year of court-ordered treatment in Southern California, and a four-year pilot study, the authors mix quantitative and qualitative methodology in order to provide counselors with an opportunity to hear first-hand how Latino partner abusive men think about manhood (machismo), interpersonal relationships, (respeto, personalismo, and simpatÌa), and family life (familismo). The authors then use these in-depth portraits to guide counselors in tailoring treatment plans to the specific needs of Latino men. Voices from Healing From Violence: "How should a Mexican man be? Respectful, understanding, loving, responsible. A good communicator. If a man had all that, and his partner too, wow! It would be great. I'd like to be like the man I just described - the ideal man, loving, respectful, all that." - Ramon "The whole time I've been in the program I've been doing something I had never done in my life - reflecting and taking stock of my own life. Putting the good and the bad in the balance." - Raul "One of the goals of group therapy, of any therapy, is to give hope. Even the man with the worst possible case, where he has lost his marriage and custody of his children, can learn to use respectful relationship skills at work and in a potential new relationship. He may have brought great losses upon himself, but his future is not necessarily bleak." - the Authors

Book Family Violence and Men of Color

Download or read book Family Violence and Men of Color written by Ricardo Carrillo, PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-08-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This innovative book examines an important, timely topicÖThe content will greatly enhance practitioners' and students' understanding and skills in working with men of color." - Elaine P. Congress, DSW, Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service "Family Violence and Men of Color is the best book in cross-cultural issues and domestic violence that I have ever read. It is a good combination of literature review, clinical interventions and cultural imagery." -Daniel Sonkin, PhD, Marriage, Family and Child Counselor Family violence is an international epidemic that knows no cultural boundaries, but for years research has overlooked the historical, political and cultural factors that often lead men toward violent behavior. The first edition of Family Violence and Men of Color broke new ground by closely examining the relationship between race and family violence. This revised edition offers an even broader, cross-cultural analysis of male violence and more specialized treatment methods and approaches. Key Features: Chapters analyzing violent behavioral patterns in each major community of color Three new chapters on the African-American and Maori ommunities, in addition to the Latino, Native American, Asian, and South American communities Culturally-based strategies and models that enhance the efficacy of existing intervention programs for men who batter Integrates clinical, experiential, and narrative approaches to family violence This text calls for a critical evaluation and transformation of cultural practices that promote violence against women, and will be pivotal in the development of more effective prevention and intervention programs in the years to come.

Book Ethnic Differences in the Predictors of Intimate Partner Violence

Download or read book Ethnic Differences in the Predictors of Intimate Partner Violence written by Jason Zengo Yano and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed study aimed to identify ethnic differences in how witnessing parental violence, masculine gender role strain (MGRS), and anger disposition are associated with the perpetration of male-to-female intimate partner violence (IPV). A conditional process model to account for the intergenerational transmission of IPV through MGRS (mediator) is tested. A multicultural convenience sample of 225 Asian American, Latino American, and White men from a diverse university in southern California completed the online "Men's Experiences Survey." Results indicated that witnessing parental violence was a significant predictor of IPV in Asian men, but not among those of other ethnicities. Anger disposition was a significant predictor of IPV for Latino men, but not others when adjusting for covariates. No significant predictors emerged for the White sample. Anger disposition emerged as a significant moderator for the conditional process model of the intergenerational transmission of IPV, but no support was found for mediation in the model. Implications of the study's findings, limitations related to measured levels of IPV in this sample, and future directions for similar lines of research are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and Health is a comprehensive reference that addresses health issues affecting women of all ages — from adolescence through maturity. It goes far beyond other books on this topic, which concentrate only on reproductive health, and has a truly international perspective. It covers key issues ranging from osteoporosis to breast cancer and other cancers, domestic violence, sexually transmitted diseases, occupational hazards, eating disorders, heart disease and other chronic illnesses, substance abuse, and societal and behavioral influences on health. In this second edition of Women and Health, chapters thoughtfully explore the current state of women's health and health care, including the influences of sex and gender on the occurrence of a wide variety of diseases and conditions. All chapters have been extensively updated and emphasize the epidemiology of the condition — the etiology, occurrence, primary and secondary prevention (screening), risk factors, surveillance, changing trends over time, and critical analysis of the diagnostic and treatment options and controversies. Treatment sections in each chapter have been expanded to create a stronger dialogue between epidemiologists and women's health practitioners. - Saves researchers and clinicians time in quickly accessing the very latest details on a broad range of women's health issues, as opposed to searching through thousands of journal articles - Provides a common language for epidemiologists, public health practitioners, and women's health specialists to discuss the behavioral, cultural, and biological determinants of women's health - Researchers and medical specialists will learn how the gender-specific risks and features of one organ system's diseases affect the health of other organ systems - For example: Hormone replacement therapy used to treat imbalance within the endocrine system is also being used to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease; Drugs developed for type 2 diabetes are now being used in chemoprevention - Orients the non-gerontologist about the importance of considering the entire life cycle of women within research designs and treatment plans - Professors teaching courses in women's health will use slides and additional materials to structure lectures/courses; students will use slides as a unique resource to study for exams

Book Hispanics and the Future of America

Download or read book Hispanics and the Future of America written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hispanics and the Future of America presents details of the complex story of a population that varies in many dimensions, including national origin, immigration status, and generation. The papers in this volume draw on a wide variety of data sources to describe the contours of this population, from the perspectives of history, demography, geography, education, family, employment, economic well-being, health, and political engagement. They provide a rich source of information for researchers, policy makers, and others who want to better understand the fast-growing and diverse population that we call "Hispanic." The current period is a critical one for getting a better understanding of how Hispanics are being shaped by the U.S. experience. This will, in turn, affect the United States and the contours of the Hispanic future remain uncertain. The uncertainties include such issues as whether Hispanics, especially immigrants, improve their educational attainment and fluency in English and thereby improve their economic position; whether growing numbers of foreign-born Hispanics become citizens and achieve empowerment at the ballot box and through elected office; whether impending health problems are successfully averted; and whether Hispanics' geographic dispersal accelerates their spatial and social integration. The papers in this volume provide invaluable information to explore these issues.
