Book An Examination of New Generation Cooperatives in the Upper Midwest

Download or read book An Examination of New Generation Cooperatives in the Upper Midwest written by Jasper Grashuis and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new organizational form, the new generation cooperative (NGC), emerged in the United States during the 1990s as farm producers came together to collectively add value to raw farm commodities. As compared to the traditional cooperative, the NGC facilitates a strong market orientation by defining membership and requiring high supply and equity capital commitments. Approximately 100 such value-added ventures formed during a period called 'cooperative fever', but public and producer interest dissipated in the 2000s. With secondary data collected from print media publications, we conclude that many of the original NGCs exited by means of bankruptcy or liquidation because of challenges common to most business organizations. However, other failures and conversions of large, successful NGCs also indicate an inherent equity and liquidity constraint, suggesting a limited ability of the organizational form to drive complex and capital-intensive value-added ventures. We conclude by raising possible conditions for the future viability of producer-owned business organizations in the value-added agri-food industry.

Book Humanistic Governance in Democratic Organizations

Download or read book Humanistic Governance in Democratic Organizations written by Sonja Novković and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access edited book brings together a number of theories under the umbrella of humanistic governance to develop a persuasive alternative perspective on governance, particularly for democratic organisations such as co-operatives. It examines how we can move beyond a profit-first approach to governance, into a framework that prioritises human dignity in all aspects of an operation. This book also discusses key issues for different types of cooperatives and how these might be addressed. And, finally, it addresses how cooperatives can better cope with dynamic change processes. This book will be of interest for academics working in the areas of stakeholder governance, social solidarity economy, ethical management and co-operatives.

Book Make No Small Plans

Download or read book Make No Small Plans written by Lee Egerstrom and published by Lone Oak Press, Limited. This book was released on 1994 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Make No Small Plans...is intended as a fresh call for cooperative action in rural America at the start of the new century. Failure to act will have catastrophic consequences for residents of rural towns and farmsteads. The world economy has changed dramatically. Governments have lost both the legal authority to intervene in farm markets and arbitrarily raise farm incomes by raising prices, and the budgetary means to do so. International trade agreements ban the former; political support and government budget priorities limit the latter... Modern agriculture, with its new sciences and new technologies, no longer needs many people to produce food and fiber crops... A declining farm population in turn reduces the need for rural retail services and for rural communities to serve as senior citizens centers... By accepting these premises, one must search for alternative actions... Rural communities, townspeople, workers, farmers, foresters, and tourism and hospitality people together must explore starting a new generation of cooperatives and new cooperative ventures"--Preface
