Book An Examination of Counter Free Automata

Download or read book An Examination of Counter Free Automata written by Sonal Pratik Patel and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an extensive examination of a graduate level monograph, Counter-Free Automata by McNaughton and Papert, to develop a deep understanding of the subject. This book is about many subclasses of type 3 languages and it proves all of these subclasses are equivalent. We have explored chapters 1 to 8 and 10. The real goal of this thesis is to solve as many problems at the end of each chapter in the book as possible. The thesis rehashes the discussion in the text of the nine chapters mentioned above. It is to be noted the text has no solution in the back of the book nor do any solutions appears to be available online. Since half or more of the problems have been solved in this undertaking, in effect a substantial beginning of a solution manual has been produced.

Book Counter free Automata

Download or read book Counter free Automata written by Robert McNaughton and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1971 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A particular class of finite-state automata, christened by the authors "counter-free," is shown here to behave like a good actor: it can drape itself so thoroughly in the notational guise and embed itself so deeply in the conceptual character of several quite different approaches to automata theory that on the surface it is hard to believe that all these roles are being assumed by the same class. This is one of the reasons it has been chosen for study here. The authors write that they "became impressed with the richness of its mathematical complexity" and that "a sure sign of gold is when profound mathematical theory interacts with problems that arise independently. And indeed it is noteworthy that the class of automata we shall discuss was defined more or less explicitly by several people working from very different directions and using very different concepts. The remarkable happening was that these definitions could not be recognized as equivalent until algebraic tools of analysis were brought to the field in the works of Schutzenberger and in the works of Krohn and Rhodes." The theme of the monograph is the utility and equivalence of these different definitions of counter-free automata. Its organization follows the plan of taking up, one by one, each of a number of different conceptualizations: the historically important "nerve net" approach; the algebraic approach, in which automata are treated as semigroups; the "classical" theory based on state transition diagrams; the "linguistic" approach based on the concept of regular expressions; and the "behavioral" descriptions using symbolic logic. In each of these conceptual areas, the class of automata under study is found in a new guise. Each time it appears as yet another special case. The authors' burden is to show that all these definitions are in fact equivalent. Care has been taken so that this research monograph can be used as a self-sufficient text. Notations have been defined carefully and always in the context of the discussion. Most of the chapters end with a substantial number of exercises. It is self-contained in that all concepts are defined, and all theorems used are, with one exception, either fully proved or safely left as exercises for the student.

Book Automated Technology for Verification and Analysis

Download or read book Automated Technology for Verification and Analysis written by Doron A. Peled and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-10-11 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Automated Technology for Veri?cation and Analysis (ATVA) international symposium series was initiated in 2003, responding to a growing interest in formal veri?cation spurred by the booming IT industry, particularly hardware design and manufacturing in East Asia. Its purpose is to promote research on automated veri?cation and analysis in the region by providing a forum for int- action between the regional and the international research/industrial commu- ties of the ?eld. ATVA 2005, the third of the ATVA series, was held in Taipei, Taiwan, October 4–7, 2005. The main theme of the symposium encompasses - sign, complexities, tools, and applications of automated methods for veri?cation and analysis. The symposium was co-located and had a two-day overlap with FORTE 2005, which was held October 2–5, 2005. We received a total of 95 submissions from 17 countries. Each submission was assigned to three Program Committee members, who were helped by their subreviewers, for rigorous and fair evaluation. The ?nal deliberation by the P- gram Committee was conducted over email for a duration of about 10 days after nearly all review reports had been collected. In the end, 33 papers were - lectedforinclusionintheprogram.ATVA2005hadthreekeynotespeechesgiven respectively by Amir Pnueli (joint with FORTE 2005), Zohar Manna, and Wo- gang Thomas. The main symposium was preceded by a tutorial day, consisting of three two-hour lectures given also by the keynote speakers.

Book FST TCS 2001 Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science

Download or read book FST TCS 2001 Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science written by Ramesh Hariharan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 21st international conference on the Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2001), organized under the auspices of the Indian Association for Research in Computing Science (IARCS). This year’s conference attracted 73 submissions from 20 countries. Each s- mission was reviewed by at least three independent referees. In a departure from previous conferences, the ?nal selection of the papers making up the program was done through an electronic discussion spanning two weeks, without a physical meeting of the Program Committee (PC). Since the PC of FSTTCS is distributed across the globe, it is very di?cult to ?x a meeting whose time and venue is convenient for a substantial fraction of the PC. Given this, it was felt that an electronic discussion would enable all members to participate on a more equal footing in the ?nal selection. All reviews, scores, and comments were posted on a secure website, with a mechanism for making updates and automatically sending noti?cations by email to relevant members of the PC. All PC members participated actively in the discussion. The general feedback on the arrangement was very positive, so we hope to continue this in future years. We had ?ve invited speakers this year: Eric Allender, Sanjeev Arora, David Harel, Colin Stirling, and Uri Zwick. We thank them for having readily accepted our invitation to talk at the conference and for providing abstracts (and even full papers) for the proceedings.

Book A Guided Tour of Artificial Intelligence Research

Download or read book A Guided Tour of Artificial Intelligence Research written by Pierre Marquis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of AI research, ranging from basic work to interfaces and applications, with as much emphasis on results as on current issues. It is aimed at an audience of master students and Ph.D. students, and can be of interest as well for researchers and engineers who want to know more about AI. The book is split into three volumes: - the first volume brings together twenty-three chapters dealing with the foundations of knowledge representation and the formalization of reasoning and learning (Volume 1. Knowledge representation, reasoning and learning) - the second volume offers a view of AI, in fourteen chapters, from the side of the algorithms (Volume 2. AI Algorithms) - the third volume, composed of sixteen chapters, describes the main interfaces and applications of AI (Volume 3. Interfaces and applications of AI). This third volume is dedicated to the interfaces of AI with various fields, with which strong links exist either at the methodological or at the applicative levels. The foreword of this volume reminds us that AI was born for a large part from cybernetics. Chapters are devoted to disciplines that are historically sisters of AI: natural language processing, pattern recognition and computer vision, and robotics. Also close and complementary to AI due to their direct links with information are databases, the semantic web, information retrieval and human-computer interaction. All these disciplines are privileged places for applications of AI methods. This is also the case for bioinformatics, biological modeling and computational neurosciences. The developments of AI have also led to a dialogue with theoretical computer science in particular regarding computability and complexity. Besides, AI research and findings have renewed philosophical and epistemological questions, while their cognitive validity raises questions to psychology. The volume also discusses some of the interactions between science and artistic creation in literature and in music. Lastly, an epilogue concludes the three volumes of this Guided Tour of AI Research by providing an overview of what has been achieved by AI, emphasizing AI as a science, and not just as an innovative technology, and trying to dispel some misunderstandings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, distributed systems are increasingly present, for public software applications as well as critical systems. software applications as well as critical systems. This title and Distributed Systems: Design and Algorithms – from the same editors – introduce the underlying concepts, the associated design techniques and the related security issues. The objective of this book is to describe the state of the art of the formal methods for the analysis of distributed systems. Numerous issues remain open and are the topics of major research projects. One current research trend consists of profoundly mixing the design, modeling, verification and implementation stages. This prototyping-based approach is centered around the concept of model refinement. This book is more specifically intended for readers that wish to gain an overview of the application of formal methods in the design of distributed systems. Master’s and PhD students, as well as engineers in industry, will find a global understanding of the techniques as well as references to the most up-to-date works in this area.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis, (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 19 (thesis year 1974) a total of 10,045 theses titles from 20 Canadian and 209 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 19 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.
