Book An Eventful Life

Download or read book An Eventful Life written by Will Parker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Eventful Life is a social history describing the life of a boy who maybe never grew up. The story begins in Will Parkers childhood as he accompanies his mother and father (one of the first travelling picture-show men) through central-western New South Wales, Australia, as they present silent films, films accompanied by vinyl soundtracks, and finally sound films on celluloid. An Eventful Life then follows Will through his teenage years working on sheep and cattle stations and in a city apprenticeship. He joins the Royal Australian Navy, is hospitalized for months with tuberculosis, and undergoes extensive artificial pneumothorax treatments. He then leaves Australia, joins the British Merchant Navy as an engineer, teaches in New Zealand, and finally returns to Sydney, where he marries and has a family. Will completes his high school education and obtains a science degree from the University of New South Wales. He teaches secondary school in Sydney, with a sojourn into management training. He and his wife fully sample small farming and the many facets of animal husbandry before he experiences his wifes gradual decline from Alzheimers/dementia and her hospitalization.

Book Riding Through Thick and Thin

Download or read book Riding Through Thick and Thin written by Melinda Folse and published by Trafalgar Square Books. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many if not most women have been locked in a battle with their bodies for as long as they can remember. And when it comes to riding horses, they drag their arsenal of self-doubt with them every time they step into the saddle. Some quit riding completely. Others ride, but are frustrated by their lack of progress as riders or what they see as poor performance. They succumb to silent self-torment as they wonder how they look, what others think, and whether they have any business on the back of a horse if their jeans feel a little too tight. Regardless of seat size, riding discipline, or the degree — or even truth — of the body issues with which they struggle, the scars on female self-image in our society run deep and wide. So with the humor and big-sisterly swagger that readers and reviewers have come to love, Melinda Folse, author of bestseller The Smart Woman’s Guide to Midlife Horses, has decided to step in with a delightful, insightful, fulfilling new book. Riding Through Thick and Thin delves to the bottom of the issues that have long held women hostage, bringing together experts, research, resources, and stories to encourage, inspire, and empower. Readers will find some answers that may surprise them: Believe it or not, this is not about losing weight or getting fit (although if that’s a point of interest, there’s a section packed with helpful tools and ideas). This book is more about what’s going on in every woman’s mind — and it taps new findings in neuroscience to reveal that permanent change to deeply ingrained body image issues is not only possible, but it may be much easier than we think.

Book excerpt: Sometimes things seem to be moving along fine, and yet something just seems to be "off." There are times when things seem to be within one's grasp, and yet just beyond our reach. To some, it is just a fact of life. Others wonder why. My Eventful Life: presents the autobiography of Jimmie L. Baker, a veteran, courier, husband, and father. It narrates the story of his life, filled with seeming firsts in his community. He seemed to have a golden touch, getting much of what he wanted in life. If he went for a job, he got it. Even so, he never stayed in a job for long. He moved frequently. Something was just not right. He had gotten out of touch with God. In My Eventful Life: Baker shares how reaching for a more complete relationship with God affected all aspects of his life. As you engage with his history, you'll be inspired to get yourself right with God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is an essential part of our humanity. We all follow some form of religion, in the original meaning of the word. But organized religion establishes definitions, boundaries and hierarchies which the founders would be amazed by. This is perhaps more true of Christianity than most other religions, due to the short life of Jesus, his sudden death, the lack of any contemporary records. His teaching about the kingdom of God is great; it could see us through our time on earth. But his followers watered it down and soon lost it altogether. It became a kingdom in heaven for the few, rather than one here and now for everyone. The Church, or Churches, that resulted became increasingly irrelevant, even a hindrance, to seeing it realized. Many will always find security and truth in the traditions that developed, and good for them. But for those who can't, for those who have given up on religion or never thought it worth considering, the original teachings are worth another look. If we could recover them and live by them, we could change ourselves and the world for the better. We could bring God up to date.

Book The Living Fountain

Download or read book The Living Fountain written by Benjamin Wood and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-26 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second decade of the twenty-first century, Quakers are increasingly divided over matters of theology, religious belonging, and the status of Friends’ Christian past. Recent controversies over Theism, Non-Theism and Universalism have highlighted deep-rooted transformations of Quaker self-understanding. In contrast to earlier decades, many contemporary Quakers hanker after an intensely inclusive community, unhampered by the particulars of Christian theology. Many British Friends no-longer see the Quaker movement as an expression of the Gospel nor a manifestation of the Universal Church. What might Friends be missing by re-imagining Quakerism in these resolutely post-Christian terms? Author Benjamin Wood argues that, far from limiting the bounds of Quaker identity, a selective return to Quakerism’s seventeenth-century roots can restore to modern Liberal Friends a shared story capable of deepening their spiritual life and worship-practice. Based neither on doctrinal agreement nor inflexible religious borders, the Quaker narrative recovered in The Living Fountain: Remembrances of Quaker Christianity is drawn together by sacred experiments in mutual love and enduring hope. Through a series of extended reflections on God, Jesus, and the language of salvation, Wood seeks to uncover a dynamic faith ncommitted to universal healing, reconciliation, and the crossing of religious and cultural boundaries. At the centre of this retrieval is the insistence that the God revealed in Quaker worship cherishes our differences and delights in our diversity.
