Book An Evening Walk A Romantic Poem for Nature Lovers

Download or read book An Evening Walk A Romantic Poem for Nature Lovers written by William Wordsworth and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1793, “An Evening Walk - A Romantic Poem for Nature Lovers” is a poem by English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. Composed whilst he was at school, the young lady to whom it was addressed was his sister, the poet and diarist Dorothy Wordsworth. A wonderful example of English Romantic poetry, “An Evening Walk” is not to be missed by fans and collectors of Wordsworth's work. William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was an English poet famous for helping to usher in the Romantic Age in English literature with the publication of “Lyrical Ballads” (1798), which he co-wrote with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His best known work is perhaps “The Prelude”, a semi-autobiographical poem from his early years which was changed and expanded many times throughout his life. Wordsworth was poet laureate of Britain between 1843 until his death in 1850. Other notable works by this author include: “The Tables Turned”, “The Thorn”, and “Lines Composed A Few Miles above Tintern Abbey”. Contents include: “An Evening Walk – Notes By William Knight” and “An Evening Walk – Addressed To A Young Lady”. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with introductory notes from “The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth” by William Knight.

You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Changes in society, beginning in the 18th century and continuing into our own time, underlie the Romantic Movement. It starts as a reaction against the intellectualism of the Enlightenment, against the rigidity of social structures protecting privilege, and against the materialism of an age which, in the first stirring of the Industrial Revolution, already shows signs of making workers the slaves of machinery and of creating squalid urban environments.

  • Pages : 736 pages

Download or read book The Prelude written by William Wordsworth and published by Random House. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in July 1850, shortly after Wordsworth's death, The Prelude was the culmination of over fifty years of creative work. The great Romantic poem of human consciousness, it takes as its theme 'the growth of a poet's mind': leading the reader back to Wordsworth's formative moments of childhood and youth, and detailing his experiences as a radical undergraduate in France at the time of the Revolution. Initially inspired by Coleridge's exhortation that Wordsworth write a work upon the French Revolution, The Prelude has ultimately become one of the finest examples of poetic autobiography ever written; a fascinating examination of the self that also presents a comprehensive view of the poet's own creative vision.

Book Reviewing before the Edinburgh 1788 1802

Download or read book Reviewing before the Edinburgh 1788 1802 written by Derek Roper and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, Reviewing before the Edinburgh is a study of English literary reviewing during the fifteen years before the founding in1802 of the Edinburgh Review, and an assessment of the reviewers’ achievement. The long introductory chapter describes the aims, methods, staffing, readership, influence, and development of the five important Reviews of the 1790s: the Monthly Review, Critical Review, English Review, Analytical Review, and British Critic. The author argues that this type of Review declined during the 19th century, not because of poor performance, but because the ambitious aim of comprehensive reviewing had become impossible to achieve. The remaining chapters discuss and evaluate the work of these Reviews, chiefly in the fields of poetry, fiction, and political and religious controversy. The book fills a gap in the literary and political history of the period; provides a compact summary of its review criticism; and gives a better perspective on both reviewers and reviewed in years that were unusually fertile in political controversy and literary experiment. It will be of interest to students of literature and history.

Book Wordsworth and the Poetry of Human Suffering

Download or read book Wordsworth and the Poetry of Human Suffering written by James H. Averill and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murderers, crazed widows, beggars, betrayed women—such are the pitiful figures who appear throughout Wordsworth's early narrative poetry. Analyzing the poet's use of pathos from the two volumes of Lyrical Ballads through the completion of The Prelude, James H. Averill argues that, for Wordsworth, the poetry of human life is inevitably the poetry of anguish and loss. Averill examines the relation of the poet to his human subjects, exploring the questions of tragic response and sentimental morality, the literary uses of human misery, and the pleasures of tragedy. In Wordsworth and the Poetry of Human Suffering, James H. Averill enriches our understanding and our appreciation of the peculiar power of Wordsworth's poetic vision.

Book The Earliest Wordsworth

Download or read book The Earliest Wordsworth written by William Wordsworth and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2002 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many editions of William Wordsworth's mature work are available but general readers have never before had access to the poetry he wrote during his school and university years. This selection from the poetry he composed between 1785 and 1790 reveals him to have been remarkably accomplished from an early age and shows that from the time he began to write he was already preoccupied with precisely the themes that would later be explored more fully in The Prelude, the great poem of his maturity. The Earliest Poems offers a unique opportunity to examine something normally withheld from our gaze: the apprenticeship of a great writer. Duncan Wu's introduction and his comprehensive notes guide the reader through versions of Wordsworth's work to show how he graduated from the early experimentation of pieces such as 'Beauty and Moonlight' to An Evening Walk, an impressive poem of over 600 lines which was published in 1793. This book spans the first five years of Wordsworth's career, revealing how the traumas of his early life forged his vision and produced the sensibility that would make him a most gifted celebrant of the human spirit. In effect, they also chronicle the evolution of British Romanticism out of the aesthetic morass of the late eighteenth century. Book jacket.

Book Improvisations of Empire

Download or read book Improvisations of Empire written by Matthew Shum and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvisations of Empire offers a historical, biographical and literary study of the life and writings of Thomas Pringle (1789–1834), the son of a Lowland tenant farmer in Scotland. It examines his Scottish journalistic and literary career, his emigration to the Cape Colony as the head of a party of Scottish settlers and his subsequent relocation to London where he gained prominence as the secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society and the editor of a popular annual, Friendship’s Offering. The central concern of the book is with Pringle’s poetry and his affiliated prose, and how these writings reflect the negotiation of his deeply conflicted colonial experience from the perspectives of his Scottish background, his shifting colonial locations and his subsequent period of residence in London.
