Book The Relative Contribution of Hudson River Tributaries to River Herring Spawning Dynamics

Download or read book The Relative Contribution of Hudson River Tributaries to River Herring Spawning Dynamics written by David Matthew Kowalik and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantifying the relative tributary contribution to anadromous fish spawning dynamics is irrefutably important when prioritizing habitat enhancement, restoration and management decisions (Everly and Boreman, 1999). Collecting sound baseline data becomes critical when seeking out the most significant contributors to spawning stock and flux. Sensitivity analyses can be employed to assess the range on uncertainty as it pertains to the estimation and application of these aforementioned contributors, however, hierarchical modeling, spatio-temporal visualization, and the cross validation of estimation methods provides a suitable means for addressing this uncertainty and the associated methods required for its reduction (Sullivan and Rudstam, 2016). With consistently measured baseline data collected and uncertainty fully characterized, one can utilize parametric optimization as a mechanism for inferring wide spread population phenomena from more localized estimates (Tam et al., 2002). Custom designed egg mats were deployed in Black Creek (Esopus, New York) and the Fall Kill (Poughkeepsie, New Your) to obtain spawning river herring egg counts for abundance modeling and subsequent population estimation. Geographic coordinates (NAD 1983 UTM Zone 18N) were recorded at sites of egg collection, and kernel density based functions in GIS were used to visualize the spatial distribution and estimated counts of river herring throughout a given system. The sites of greatest egg deposition were ultimately viewed in conjunction with their relative proximity to the first impassable barrier to anadronous fish migration. The coordination of these activities serve to either refute or support the future augmentation of barriers to fish migration, management of habitat, prioritization of project management, and potential implementation of supplemental fish passage within tribitaries of the Hudson River. Gravid female river herring were sampled from the main stem of the Hudson River through the use of haul seines for post-mortem ovary analysis. Auto-enumeration of ovary egg contents using an Epson Perfection V19 flatbed scanner and ImageJ software allowed for fecundity analysis. Standardized river herring standing egg crop (mean egg count per female) was multipplied by female river herring population estimates, obtained from Delta Vision HD underwater camera counts and Smith-Root SR-1601 potentiometric fish counts, in order to further estimate egg productivity within a system Delta Vision HD underwater camera daily population estimates were compared against Smith-Root SR-1601 estimates to address issues of double counting, fiscal cost, cumbrous technology, and accuracy.

Book Operation of Abernathy Channel for Incubation of Salmon Eggs

Download or read book Operation of Abernathy Channel for Incubation of Salmon Eggs written by Allan E. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spawning and incubation channel constructed in 1959 on Abernathy Creek near Longview, Washington, has been used for seasons to incubate fall chinook salmon and chum salmon eggs. Survival of eggs from both species was higher than reported for other channels and controlled-flow projects. Studies included effects of sedimentation, egg planting density, and stage of egg development at planting on survival. In early experiments sediment in the upper sections substantially reduced survival. In later experiments, after the construction of a sand trap and settling chamber, survivals significantly increased.

Book Species Profiles Life Histories and Environmental Requirements of Coastal Fishes and Invertebrates North Atlantic Rainbow Smelt

Download or read book Species Profiles Life Histories and Environmental Requirements of Coastal Fishes and Invertebrates North Atlantic Rainbow Smelt written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Species profiles are literature summaries of the taxonomy, life history, and environmental requirements of coastal fishes and aquatic invertebrates. They are designed to assist with environmental impact assessments. The rainbow smelt is an abundant forage fish for commercially and recreationally valuable fishes such as striped bass and bluefish on the east coast and several species of salmon and trout in the Great Lakes. The rainbow smelt also supports an important sportfishery throughout most of its range. In 1976, the total smelt harvest in the coastal waters of New England was 105,000 lb. Coastal rainbow smelt are anadromous, spawning in freshwater and maturing in saline water peaks in spring. Salinities above 12 ppt were fatal to eggs. Reported fecundities are 7,000 to 44,000 eggs per female. Smelt are always found in shallow water (

Book Protocols for Monitoring Spawning Populations of Lake Utopia Rainbbow Smelt Osmerus Mordax

Download or read book Protocols for Monitoring Spawning Populations of Lake Utopia Rainbbow Smelt Osmerus Mordax written by Danielle L. MacDonald and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Two populations of Rainbow Smelt (LURS) co-exist in Lake Utopia: a small-bodied form (SbP) listed as threatened under the Species at Risk Act (SARA), and a large-bodied form (LbP) under consideration for listing under SARA. The two populations differ in physical characteristics, life-history, and are reproductively isolated. This report outlines methods (and provides corresponding data collection forms) for monitoring the occupation and spawning by LURS in their Lake Utopia spawning streams and includes four activities: 1) Annual monitoring for the occupation (presence or absence) of LURS in specified spawning streams; 2) Annual monitoring for the presence of obstructions and barriers in specified LURS spawning streams; 3) Monitoring water depth in Mill Lake Stream; and 4) Nighttime monitoring in Mill Lake Stream in support of LURS-LbP abundance surveys. Following these protocols should promote a consistent approach to measuring progress towards survival and recovery of LURS as outlined in their Recovery Strategy and Action Plan"--Abstract, p. iv.
