Book On Evaluating Curricular Effectiveness

Download or read book On Evaluating Curricular Effectiveness written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-11-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the evaluation research literature that has accumulated around 19 K-12 mathematics curricula and breaks new ground in framing an ambitious and rigorous approach to curriculum evaluation that has relevance beyond mathematics. The committee that produced this book consisted of mathematicians, mathematics educators, and methodologists who began with the following charge: Evaluate the quality of the evaluations of the thirteen National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported and six commercially generated mathematics curriculum materials; Determine whether the available data are sufficient for evaluating the efficacy of these materials, and if not; Develop recommendations about the design of a project that could result in the generation of more reliable and valid data for evaluating such materials. The committee collected, reviewed, and classified almost 700 studies, solicited expert testimony during two workshops, developed an evaluation framework, established dimensions/criteria for three methodologies (content analyses, comparative studies, and case studies), drew conclusions on the corpus of studies, and made recommendations for future research.

  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1992-04-24

Download or read book Making the Grade written by Martin V. Covington and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-04-24 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achievement behaviour in schools can best be understood in terms of attempts by students to maintain a positive self-image. For many students, trying hard is frightening because a combination of effort and failure implies low ability, which is often equated with worthlessness. Thus many students described as unmotivated are in actuality highly motivated - not to learn, but to avoid failure. Students have a variety of techniques for avoiding failure, ranging from cheating to setting low goals which are easily achieved. In Making the Grade, Martin Covington extracts powerful educational implications from self-worth theory and other contemporary views of motivation that will be useful for everyone concerned with the educational dilemmas we face. He provides a comprehensive, insightful review of research and theory, both contemporary and historical, on the topic of achievement motivation, and arranges this knowledge in ways that lead to imminently practical recommendations for restructuring schools.

Book Research that Informs Teachers and Teacher Educators

Download or read book Research that Informs Teachers and Teacher Educators written by Donald R. Cruickshank and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review of selected research on the practices of teaching and teacher preparation juxtaposes the models for conducting inquiry on teaching and teacher education with a synthesis of research on what is currently known. Chapter 1 presents several models for research on teaching and teacher education and presents some research findings according to categories of variables posited by the models. In the context of the Coleman Report and responses to it, Chapter 2 summarizes 22 effective schools studies, indicates 7 limitations of such research, and suggests ways effective schools research can inform both preservice and inservice teacher education. Chapter 3 presents a rationale for the importance of such investigations and reviews four recent studies on effective K-12 educational practice. Chapter 4 describes how inquiry on teaching has been conducted, presents some significant findings, and discusses both limitations and utilization of such research. Chapter 5 reviews research on teacher education according to four categories: preservice teachers, preservice curriculum and instruction, the education professoriate, and the context of teacher preparation. Chapter 6 summarizes the previous chapters and concludes with observations and recommendations. Each chapter includes references. (JD)
