Book An Evaluation of the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program at the Chippew County WIC Clinic

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program at the Chippew County WIC Clinic written by Jessica A. Hilger and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program at the Chippewa County WIC clinic in Wisconsin. The study examined the relationship of sociodemographic variables to breastfeeding rates as well as factors promoting breastfeeding and barriers to breastfeeding in a sample of WIC participants. Effectiveness was determined by comparing program goals to pre-and post-implementation duration rates, and participant's ratings and recommendations of the peer counselor. Pre-and-post implementation data for all WIC mothers and prenatal WIC mothers were obtained using secondary data. In addition, a survey was administered to 68 women as they entered the WIC clinic for their individual WIC appointments, and data were analyzed for sociodemographic variables related to breastfeeding rates. Subjects were 18 years or older with infants born between May 1, 2010 and January 31, 2011. Most subjects were White ranging in age from 18 to 42. Approximately, half were employed and had completed technical school/some college. Findings showed that breastfeeding goals were significantly higher than breastfeeding duration rates. Significant, positive relationships were found for maternal age and duration rates, and maternal age and exclusive rates. Mothers with highest educational attainment had significantly higher breastfeeding duration rates. No other significant findings were observed in the study. Findings related to program effectiveness showed that all pre-to post-implementation duration rates increased, except for the 6 month rate, and percentage increases exceeded the targeted goals of the Peer Counseling Program; all participants who rated the peer counselor's assistance gave the highest possible rating; and all who used the Program would recommend it to other mothers.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Background: Ohio's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) serves infants, children up to age five, and women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum. Ohio WIC is comprised of 75 projects, each serving one to four counties. Beginning in January 2004, 11 projects implemented the Breastfeeding Peer Helper Program (BPHP), which aims to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration among WIC participants by employing and training women who have breastfed to promote, support and educate on breastfeeding as breastfeeding peer helpers (PH). The objectives of this study were to 1) describe current program operations 2) assess BPHP effects on initiation rates, and 3) determine the characteristics of successful programs. Methods: PH and supervisors completed an online questionnaire on training, employment, activities and PH demographics. Data on breastfeeding rates and participant demographics came from the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS), the Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System (PNSS) and administrative records. SPSS was used to analyze descriptive data and SAS to compare breastfeeding rates. Results: BPHP administration including hours of training (median: 24) ratio of peers to women participants (range: 1:100 to 1:1300), rate of pay (average: $10.43/hour), and activities performed by the PH (e.g., home and hospital visits) varied among projects. Among participants in BPHP projects breastfeeding initiation increased 18.3% from 2003 and 2007, compared to 12.8% (p

Book The Sioux Chef s Indigenous Kitchen

Download or read book The Sioux Chef s Indigenous Kitchen written by Sean Sherman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 James Beard Award Winner: Best American Cookbook Named one of the Best Cookbooks of 2017 by NPR, The Village Voice, Smithsonian Magazine, UPROXX, New York Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, Mpls. St. PaulMagazine and others Here is real food—our indigenous American fruits and vegetables, the wild and foraged ingredients, game and fish. Locally sourced, seasonal, “clean” ingredients and nose-to-tail cooking are nothing new to Sean Sherman, the Oglala Lakota chef and founder of The Sioux Chef. In his breakout book, The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen, Sherman shares his approach to creating boldly seasoned foods that are vibrant, healthful, at once elegant and easy. Sherman dispels outdated notions of Native American fare—no fry bread or Indian tacos here—and no European staples such as wheat flour, dairy products, sugar, and domestic pork and beef. The Sioux Chef’s healthful plates embrace venison and rabbit, river and lake trout, duck and quail, wild turkey, blueberries, sage, sumac, timpsula or wild turnip, plums, purslane, and abundant wildflowers. Contemporary and authentic, his dishes feature cedar braised bison, griddled wild rice cakes, amaranth crackers with smoked white bean paste, three sisters salad, deviled duck eggs, smoked turkey soup, dried meats, roasted corn sorbet, and hazelnut–maple bites. The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen is a rich education and a delectable introduction to modern indigenous cuisine of the Dakota and Minnesota territories, with a vision and approach to food that travels well beyond those borders.
