Book An Evaluation of Sexual Harassment Prevention Education Programs for University Faculty and Staff

Download or read book An Evaluation of Sexual Harassment Prevention Education Programs for University Faculty and Staff written by Elizabeth Anne Schrock (Graduate student) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Despite widespread use of compulsory online prevention training, sexual harassment continues to occur at high rates. Most universities use online sexual harassment prevention (SHP) programs to meet state compliance requirements, but there is little research evaluating their effectiveness. The purpose of the current quantitative study was to investigate the impact of SHP as well as to explore differences in knowledge about sexual harassment, attitudes about sexual harassment myths, willingness to engage in bystander behaviors, and perceptions of organizational climate for sexual harassment among groups. Faculty, staff, and administrators from three campuses in the California State University system (N = 1,699) completed a 77-item survey, reporting that they had participated in the compulsory online SHP training an average of 4.59 times. Overall, mean scores for knowledge, attitudes, bystander behaviors, and perceptions of climate scales were high, but non-managerial staff, men, and heterosexual participants scored significantly lower than managers/faculty, women, and lesbian/gay/bisexual/queer participants on most scales. Multiple regression models showed that perceptions of climate, training, and characteristics significantly predicted outcomes; however, these models explained a small proportion of the variance in the outcomes. Recency and frequency of participation in SHP were nonsignificant predictors, but the perception of climate was significantly predictive of knowledge and bystander behaviors. Implications of the study include developing campus-wide interventions focused on climate and ensuring that SHP training addresses identity-specific and culturally relevant topics. Additionally, given the finding that repeated, compulsory online training is unlikely to have a meaningful ongoing impact on knowledge, attitudes, or bystander behaviors, recommendations for future practice include adapting in-person SHP training to build on what is already taught in online training and including topics specific to the campus or identity group included in the training. Future research should use different research designs and investigate the impact of SHP training length, content, and modality to determine best practices for SHP.

This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

Book Sexual Harassment in Higher Education

Download or read book Sexual Harassment in Higher Education written by Billie Wright Dziech and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1998, Sexual Harassment in Higher Education addresses the problem of sexual harassment on college campuses. This work reflects on a variety of aspects of sexual harassment, its litigation and law, as well as how the issues they demonstrate often have as much to do with linguistics or jurisprudence as with negative action, though there is a great deal of evidence of the latter. The book provides a clear-eyed and detailed assessment of the 'harassment' controversies now plaguing America's universities and colleges.

Book Evaluating the Effectiveness of Interventions to Prevent and Address Sexual Harassment

Download or read book Evaluating the Effectiveness of Interventions to Prevent and Address Sexual Harassment written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rising awareness of and increased attention to sexual harassment has resulted in momentum to implement sexual harassment prevention efforts in higher education institutions. Work on preventing sexual harassment is an area that has recently garnered a lot of attention, especially around education and programs that go beyond the standard anti-sexual harassment trainings often used to comply with legal requirements. On April 20-21, 2021, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the workshop Developing Evaluation Metrics for Sexual Harassment Prevention Efforts. The workshop explored approaches and strategies for evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of sexual harassment interventions being implemented at higher education institutions and research and training sites, in order to assist institutions in transforming promising ideas into evidence-based best practices. Workshop participants also addressed methods, metrics, and measures that could be used to evaluate sexual harassment prevention efforts that lead to change in the organizational climate and culture and/or a change in behavior among community members. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop." --

Book Sexual Harassment in Education and Work Settings

Download or read book Sexual Harassment in Education and Work Settings written by Michele A. Paludi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addresses current legal and psychological issues involved in campus and workplace violence, specifically sexual misconduct, and offers best practices for organizations seeking to prevent and respond to sexual misconduct. Based on an idea conceived at a conference for the International Coalition of Sexual Harassment, this book offers up-to-date information about sexual harassment and other forms of sexual misconduct in academic and workplace settings, as well as legal and guidance updates and best practices that discuss prevention methods. The chapters are written by noted attorneys, campus and workplace consultants, and other scholars who have assisted in collecting incident data and have thought leadership to offer. Chapters address how workplaces and campuses respond to forms of violence as well as the impact of sexual harassment on individuals, bystanders, and organizations. Readers will learn about topics such as the "Not Alone" initiative—a result of President Obama's Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault—and the history of Titles VII and IX legislation the United States. The editors have compiled resources that address the cultural and social views of sexual harassment, the history of sexual misconduct on campuses and in organizations, and sample organizations at the national level that deal with prevention, advocacy, and legal guidance for students and employees.
