Book An Evaluation of Sea Based Sustainment of Forces

Download or read book An Evaluation of Sea Based Sustainment of Forces written by Christopher Mark Frey and published by . This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marine Corps has formed a vision of how to conduct future amphibious warfare through its development of Operational Maneuver From the Sea (OMFTS), Ship-to-Objective Maneuver (STOM), and Sea-based Logistics (SBL) concepts. These concepts have forces deploying directly from ship to objectives ashore with a reduction or elimination of logistics infrastructure ashore. Combat forces operating ashore will be sustained directly from a sea-base with support from ship-to-shore transporters. By sea basing logistics functions, there will be a much greater demand upon these transporters. This thesis models the sea-based sustainment of Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) forces deployed from amphibious warfare ships. A scenario for analysis is developed with force packages of personnel and equipment located at certain locations ashore during different days of an operation. Sustainment requirements and available transporter capacity are then determined and compared for twenty-seven cases comprising different ship-to-shore distances, different levels of aircraft attrition due to enemy interdiction, and different footprints of mobile logistics forces deployed ashore. This comparison provides insight into the ability of SBL to sustain forces ashore conducting rations in accordance with OMFTS and STOM concepts.

Book Naval Expeditionary Logistics

Download or read book Naval Expeditionary Logistics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-09 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of the Chief of Naval Operations, the National Research Council (NRC) conducted a study to determine the technological requirements, operational changes, and combat service support structure necessary to land and support forces ashore under the newly evolving Navy and Marine Corps doctrine. The Committee on Naval Expeditionary Logistics, operating under the auspices of the NRC's Naval Studies Board, was appointed to (1) evaluate the packaging, sealift, and distribution network and identify critical nodes and operations that affect timely insertion of fuels, ammunition, water, medical supplies, food, vehicles, and maintenance parts and tool blocks; (2) determine specific changes required to relieve these critical nodes and support forces ashore, from assault through follow-on echelonment; and (3) present implementable changes to existing support systems, and suggest the development of innovative new systems and technologies to land and sustain dispersed units from the shoreline to 200 miles inland. In the course of its study, the committee soon learned that development of OMFTS is not yet at a stage to allow, directly, detailed answers to many of these questions. As a result, the committee addressed the questions in terms of the major logistics functions of force deployment, force sustainment, and force medical support, and the fundamental logistics issues related to each of these functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of land bases from which to launch and maintain military, diplomatic, and humanitarian relief operations is becoming increasingly uncertain because of physical or political constraints. The ability to operate from a sea base, therefore, is likely to become more and more important. The Defense Science Board recently concluded that Sea Basing will be a critical future joint military capability and that DOD should proceed to develop such capability. Following the DSB report, the Navy requested that the National Research Council (NRC) convene a workshop to assess the science and technology base, both inside and outside the Navy, for developing Sea Basing and to identify R&D for supporting future concepts. This report of the workshop includes an examination of Sea Basing operational concepts; ship and aircraft technology available to make Sea Basing work; and issues involved in creating the sea base as a joint system of systems.

Book Sea Basing and Alternatives for Deploying and Sustaining Ground Combat Forces

Download or read book Sea Basing and Alternatives for Deploying and Sustaining Ground Combat Forces written by United States. Congressional Budget Office and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A centerpiece of the Department of Defense's (DoD's) transformation efforts in recent years has been the move toward making ground forces less reliant on access to foreign-controlled facilities such as harbors, airports, or logistics bases on the ground in their area of operations." "The United States Marine Corps and Army have long maintained expeditionary forces organized and equipped to be rapidly moved and inserted into combat with little reliance on access to local bases or infrastructure. Recognizing the vulnerability of forces that are dependent on local access (as U.S. forces have been in Afghanistan and Iraq), the Department of Defense (DoD) is improving its expeditionary capabilities across all of the military services. Prominent among those efforts is the Navy's plan to field a 14-ship squadro--the Maritime Prepositioning Force (Future), or MPF(F--that would be capable of deploying, employing, and sustaining a Marine expeditionary brigade with little or no need for access to local bases or other infrastructure. This study ... looks at the capabilities and costs associated with MPF(F) and sea basing in general as well as other approaches that DoD might take to improve its expeditionary capabilities."--Preface.

Book A Decision Support System for Sea Based Sustainment Operations

Download or read book A Decision Support System for Sea Based Sustainment Operations written by Norman Lyle Reitter and published by . This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marine Corps plans to fight battles in the 21st century using the littoral battlespace to maneuver forces from a sea-base to the operational objective. Combat forces ashore will be sustained directly from a sea-base to allow combat elements to maneuver freely without having to defend a rear area. In this type of environment, planners must be able to convert current data, intelligence, and status reports of units ashore into useful planning information. A sea-based sustainment posture makes transportation assets in the ship-to-objective delivery network critical for sustainment. This thesis focuses on sustainment and distribution in a sea-based environment. The Sea-based Logistics Decision Support System (SBLDSS) is developed to assist sustainment planners in this environment to predict inventory levels of forces ashore and assist in managing transportation assets. First, typical forces are modeled to reflect both their composition and activities ashore. Resupply needs are determined based on the commander's concept of operations and logistics planning factors developed for each force. Transportation assets, used to sustain the forces, are modeled. Demand is then placed on these transporters by both logistical and operational missions. Finally, a utilization schedule is constructed to determine if a feasible distribution plan exists.

Book Naval Mine Warfare

Download or read book Naval Mine Warfare written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-10-19 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea mines have been important in naval warfare throughout history and continue to be so today. They have caused major damage to naval forces, slowed or stopped naval actions and commercial shipping, and forced the alteration of strategic and tactical plans. The threat posed by sea mines continues, and is increasing, in today's world of inexpensive advanced electronics, nanotechnology, and multiple potential enemies, some of which are difficult to identify. This report assesses the Department of the Navy's capabilities for conducting naval mining and countermining sea operations.
