Book The Impact of Two Reading Programs on Majority and Minority Students Scores of the Virginia Standards of Learning Reading Assessments in One School Division

Download or read book The Impact of Two Reading Programs on Majority and Minority Students Scores of the Virginia Standards of Learning Reading Assessments in One School Division written by Helen L. Davenport and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of teaching reading and the evolution of numerous reading approaches and programs have been controversial issues for many years. The Nation At Risk report initiated by the National Commission on Excellence in Education indicated that America’s elementary students were not learning to read. This prompted state and national governments to initiate measures for closer alignment of the curriculum and measures to ensure student and teacher accountability. The establishment of the Virginia Standards of Learning set high benchmarks for all children in Virginia. The signing of The No Child Left Behind Act established high standards of accountability for all children in America. In order to meet these high standards, school systems were encouraged to use searched based reading programs. This research study investigates the use oftwo reading programs and what impact if any they had on the Virginia Standards of Learning reading tests scores obtained by third grade students. The conclusions of the research study indicated that the instructional strategies of the two programs did not significantly impact the tests scores of the students at the .05 level of significance. Although some teachers expressed a preference for one instructional program over the other, the classroom instructional strategies and teacher attitudes did not impact the reading test results either. Recommendations suggested combining strategies that were necessary for the success of the students. Reading instruction is not a one-size fits all process; therefore more teacher training and in service were also recommended.

Book Alternatives to Privatizing Public Education and Curriculum

Download or read book Alternatives to Privatizing Public Education and Curriculum written by Daniel Ness and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through conversations in honor of Dale D. Johnson, this book takes a critical view of the monoculture in curriculum and policy that has developed in education with the increase of federal funding and privatization of services for public education, and examines the shift from public interest and control to private and corporate shareholder hegemony. Most states’ educational responsibilities—assessment of constituents, curriculum development, and instructional protocols—are increasingly being outsourced to private enterprises in an effort to reduce state budgets. These enterprises have been given wide access to state resources such as public data from state-sanctioned testing results, field-testing rights to public schools, and financial assistance. Chapter authors challenge this paradigm as well as the model that has set growing premiums on accountability and performance measures. Connecting common impact between the standards movement and the privatization of education, this book lays bare the repercussions of high-stakes accountability coupled with increasing privatization. Book Anti Black Literacy Laws and Policies

Download or read book Anti Black Literacy Laws and Policies written by Arlette Ingram Willis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A COUNTERNARRATIVE This groundbreaking book uncovers how anti-Black racism has informed and perpetuated anti-literacy laws, policies, and customs from the colonial period to the present day. As a counternarrative of the history of Black literacy in the United States, the book’s historical lens reveals the interlocking political and social structures that have repeatedly failed to support equity in literacy for Black students. Arlette Ingram Willis walks readers through the impact of anti-Black racism’s impact on literacy education by identifying and documenting the unacknowledged history of Black literacy education, one that is inextricably bound up with a history of White supremacy. Willis analyzes, exposes, illuminates, and interrogates incontrovertible historical evidence of the social, political, and legal efforts to deny equal literacy access. The chapters cover an in-depth evolution of the role of White supremacy and the harm it causes in forestalling Black readers’ progress; a critical examination of empirical research and underlying ideological assumptions that resulted in limiting literacy access; and a review of federal and state documents that restricted reading access for Black people. Willis interweaves historical vignettes throughout the text as antidotes to whitewashing the history of literacy among Black people in the United States and offers recommendations on ways forward to dismantle racist reading research and laws. By centering the narrative on the experiences of Black people in the United States, Willis shifts the conversation and provides an uncompromising focus on not only the historical impact of such laws and policies but also their connections to present-day laws and policies. A definitive history of the instructional and legal structures that have harmed generations of Black people, this text is essential for scholars, students, and policymakers in literacy education, reading research, history of education, and social justice education.

Book Assessing Success in Family Literacy Projects

Download or read book Assessing Success in Family Literacy Projects written by Daniel D. Holt and published by Center for Applied Linguistics. This book was released on 1994 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of family literacy projects focuses on alternatives to traditional methods of program evaluation. In the first chapter, the distinction between standardized and alternative assessments is clarified and the special evaluation needs of family literacy projects are highlighted. The remainder of the handbook is intended to help program staff members design and implement appropriate alternative approaches to assessment. Each chapter addresses a different aspect of assessment and evaluation. Chapter 2 contains a model for integrating program planning, implementation, and evaluation activities. Chapter 3 addresses initial assessment, including needs assessment, intake, and placement, suggesting strategies for using these to yield accurate baseline information. The fourth chapter describes how alternative approaches can be used to document learners' progress toward instructional objectives, and the fifth chapter suggests uses for surveys, performance samples, focus groups, and observation techniques to measure and demonstrate progress toward program goals. The final chapter describes the process used in designing and field testing this handbook, using the planning model presented earlier and offering methods for refining the project in question. A glossary is included. (MSE) (Adjunct ERIC Clearinghouse on Literacy Education)
