Book Pit and Fissure Sealants

Download or read book Pit and Fissure Sealants written by Katrin Bekes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides wide-ranging information on current clinical and scientific knowledge on the various aspects of fissure sealing. Trends in the epidemiology of caries are first examined, followed by thorough description of the morphology of pits and fissures and types of sealant. The role of sealants in the prevention of caries is discussed. Diagnostic parameters are presented, along with step-by-step descriptions of clinical procedures for fissure sealing. Chapters are also included on alternative techniques of fissure sealing, sealing of carious fissures, and therapeutic fissure sealing. The final chapter in the book focuses on the cost effectiveness of the procedure. Tooth surfaces with pits and fissures are particularly vulnerable to caries development. Sealants were developed to help manage these sites of the tooth and safeguard the surfaces from decay. This book has been written by acknowledged experts in the field. It will be of value for all dental professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of current knowledge on the science and the clinical application of pit and fissure sealants.

Book Evaluation of Two Methods of Fissure Treatment Before Sealant Placement on Different Caries Levels

Download or read book Evaluation of Two Methods of Fissure Treatment Before Sealant Placement on Different Caries Levels written by Swati Dinesh Chitre and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occlusal pits and fissures are ideal places for caries development. Placement of dental sealants has been reported to be effective in preventing this process. However, the effectiveness of dental sealants has been reported to be influenced by clinical factors, such as preparation and placement techniques. A report recently published by the American Dental Association on the clinical recommendations for use of pit-and-fissure sealants included critical evaluation and a summary of relevant scientific evidence on the use of sealants aimed at assisting clinicians. The report addressed concerns such as: Does placing sealants over early (noncavitated) lesions prevent progression of the lesions? Are there any techniques that could improve sealants' retention and effectiveness in caries prevention? The investigators concluded that there is limited and conflicting evidence to support that mechanical preparation with a bur results in higher retention rates in children and recommend that pit-and-fissure sealants should be placed on early (noncavitated) carious lesions. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate two methods of fissure treatment before sealant placement on different caries levels. In this study, 135 extracted human molars (ICDAS codes 0 to 2) were collected and ranked by a calibrated examiner into three groups. These were further divided into three subgroups (nine total). Occlusal surfaces were prepared with: 1) a ơ-mm round bur, 2) air abrasion, and 3) no treatment as a control. All groups were etched with 3.0- percent phosphoric acid for 15 seconds, rinsed thoroughly, and dried with an air water syringe. Opaque dental sealants were placed on the etched occlusal surfaces according to the accepted clinical standards and light-cured for 30 seconds. All groups were thermocycled for 5000 cycles. The roots of the teeth were painted with nail varnish, root apices were sealed with wax, and the occlusal surfaces were immersed in 1.0-percent methylene blue for a full 24 hours. The next day the teeth were cleaned, and the roots were sectioned to expose the crowns. Crowns were cut along the occlusal surfaces in the buccolingual direction. The sectioned surfaces were examined under the Nikon SMZ 1500 microscope for sealant penetration in the fissure and microleakage along the sealant enamel interface. The analyses were performed on a transformation of the sealant penetration percentage commonly used for calculated percentages: sin-1(p1/2). The effects of the type of group, the ICDAS code, and the fissure type on sealant penetration percentage were compared using ANOVA. The effects on microleakage and bubbles were compared using GEE methods applied to logistic regression. The effects on dye penetration were compared using GEE methods applied to cumulative logistic regression to account for the ordered categories of the dye penetration scale. In the findings of sealant penetration, the group type did not have a significant effect on sealant penetration (p = 0.195). ICDAS codes had a significant effect on sealant penetration (p = 0.0113) where ICDAS Code 0 had greater penetration than ICDAS codes 1 and 2. Fissure type had a significant effect on sealant penetration (p = 0.0001) where fissure types V and U had greater sealant penetration than Fissure types Y and W. In the findings of microleakage, the type of group had a significant effect on microleakage (p = 0.0004) where the abrasion group had increased microleakage as compared with the 1/4 round bur and control groups. ICDAS code had a significant effect on microleakage (p = 0.0022) where ICDAS code 0 had less microleakage as compared with ICDAS code 1 and 2. Fissure types V, U, Y, and W did not have a significant effect on microleakage (p = 0.721).

Book Pit and Fissure sealants

Download or read book Pit and Fissure sealants written by Sharon Priscilla and published by Clever Fox Publishing. This book was released on with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental caries is an imbalance between the gain and loss of minerals. The minerals are lost from teeth by acids produced by bacteria within the mouth whereas minerals are gained from saliva and fluorides present in the oral cavity. Posterior teeth have fissures while anterior teeth have cingulum or pits. These pits and fissure are most prone to dental decay as food gets trapped in them and are difficult to clean. Pit and fissure sealants are material used to fill these pits and fissures to create a smooth surface making it easy to clean. Pit and fissure sealants are commonly used in pediatric patients and erupting permanent molars as they are at high risk. Pit and fissure sealants are a preventive treatment method where a barrier is created and removes biofilm from the occlusal surface. This library dissertation highlights various pit and fissure sealants, their indication, contraindication, technique of application.

Book Pit and Fissure Sealants in Young Adults

Download or read book Pit and Fissure Sealants in Young Adults written by Bruce Allan Matis and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most current textbooks state that pit and fissure sealant use should be an integral part of primary prevention, especially in children, because they offer specific protection against the occurrence and progression of a specific disease, namely dental caries. The American Dental Association endorses the use of sealants as a proven effective preventive measure which will contribute to the prevention of occlusal caries. This study represents an attempt to answer two questions -- whether sealants can be retained effectively in young adults and which of two methods of isolation is more practicable from a time and retention standpoint. These questions are very germane, as both the United States Air Force and Army Dental Services are currently placing sealants in children, but question their efficacy in young adults.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in full color, this text uses a unique age-specific organization to discuss all aspects of pediatric dentistry from infancy through adolescence. Each age-specific section covers the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes that children experience, as well as the epidemiology of dental disease at that age. Other chapters explore the examination, treatment planning, radiographic concerns, prevention, trauma, restorative dentistry, pulp therapy, orthodontics, and behavior management of each age range. Unique organization begins with an introduction to the basic information and topics pertinent to children of all ages, then divides up the rest of the text by age group to cover the specific changes the child experiences physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially. In most cases, particular dental issues are discussed only once, at the point in a child’s development at which they are most appropriate. Section on children from conception to age three covers conditions such as cleft palate, disturbances in calcification, unusual numbers of teeth, oral habits, caries, and the development of malocclusions that start during these years. Chapter on aesthetic restorative dentistry for the adolescent looks at material selection, tooth color and form, diastemas, discolored teeth, bleaching and more. Chapter on sport dentistry and mouth protection covers how to evaluate child/adolescent athletes, the different types of mouth protection available, and professional activities in sports dentistry. Chapter on the diagnosis of oral lesions and developmental anomalies uses tables and extensive illustrations to depict developmental anomalies, white soft tissue lesions and enlargements, dark soft tissue lesions, ulcerative lesions, radiolucent lesions of bone, mixed radiolucent and radiopaque lesions of bone. NEW! Full-color design creates an immediate visual impact and better illustrates concepts and dental conditions.

Book Clinical Evaluation of an Adhesive Sealant for Controlling Dental Caries in Naval Personnel

Download or read book Clinical Evaluation of an Adhesive Sealant for Controlling Dental Caries in Naval Personnel written by George T. Eden and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A polymeric pit and fissure sealant reported effective in preventing occlusal dental decay in children was evaluated in 111 young men who were candidates for entrance into the Naval Submarine School. The sealant application had not shown any measurable treatment effect in the study population at the end of the first year of this two-year study. The very low occlusal attack rate for untreated control teeth (1.6% for one year) strongly suggests that sealant application, regardless of treatment effect, would not be a cost effective measure in active duty Navy personnel.
