Book excerpt: Using a quantitative approach, the researcher investigated the attitudes of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III (D3) men’s (n = 69) and women’s (n = 53) sports student-athletes (SAs). This study aimed to examine the current attitudes of male, female, and non-binary NCAA D3 SAs towards male, female, and non-binary strength and conditioning coaches (SCCs). Attitudes were assessed for 121 participants via a 12- question modified Attitudes of Athletes Toward Male versus Female Coaches Questionnaire (AAMFC-Q; Magnusen & Rhea, 2009) consisting of Likert-scaled questions ranking feelings towards a described, gendered SCC. The researcher determined there to be no significant interactions between gendered sport and condition, suggesting that previously noted SCC gender preferences no longer prevail in D3 athletics. However, via main effects significant differences between gendered sport was noted when participants were prompted with considering how they would feel about the hypothetical coach’s ability to motivate and encourage them. Additionally, significant differences between conditions were noted in items examining the participants’ ability to take punishment from the hypothetical coach and, when directly asked if they preferred the gender of the described coach. The findings of the present study are pertinent to practitioners and administrators working with SCCs and SAs of varying gender identities. Professionals involved in the strength and conditioning training of D3 student-athletes can use the results of the current study to inform hiring decisions, when educating staff and athletes, and to better understand the athletes' feelings towards SCCs. Additionally, involved personnel should consider this evidence of the prevailing existence of hegemonic masculinity in athletics and evaluate how they may work to dissuade the continuance of such.

Book excerpt: Athletes have been found to have more negative attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help than non-athletes despite experiencing comparable amounts of mental illness. The purpose of the present study was to examine factors that are associated with athletes help-seeking attitudes, including athletic identity and emotional competence. A sample of 144 college student athletes from a small, private Midwestern college in the United States participated in the study. The athletes competed at the NCAA Division III level. Participants were asked to complete the following measures: Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Short Form, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Self-Stigma of Seeking Help Scale, the Problem Orientation Scale of the Social Problem Solving Inventory for Adolescents, and the Rumination subscale of the Inhibition Rumination Scale. Correlational analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were used to examine the extent to which athletic identity and emotional competence, as measured by alexithymia, problem orientation, and rumination, predicted attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Results revealed that both athletic identity and the emotional competence variables entered as a block predicted unique variance in the athletes attitudes toward seeking help. Among emotional competence variables, alexithymia had a significant negative bivariate relationship with attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help and emerged as worthy of further study. Problem orientation was identified as a significant predictor in the regression models, however, functioned as a suppressor variable and did not have a significant bivariate correlation with attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Findings, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Abstract The Social Cognitive Career Theory was applied to examine how the desire to coach or administrate are impacted by self-efficacy, occupational valence, perceived hindrance, and role model influence. This study was conducted to address the underrepresentation of females in collegiate sports leadership positions. The study examined if being coached by males or if males in leadership positions is preferred. Women coach less than half, (40.2%) of women0́9s sports and women account for 19.6% percent of administrators in college athletic departments. Hypothetically, the results of this study will support and enhance the NCAA college sports model by revealing quantitative data that provide a foundation for understanding the problems and identifying key factors important to the leadership development of female student-athletes. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, MANOVAs, and path analysis. Everhart and Chelladurai (1998) stated that female athletes preferred male coaches and that female athletes that had male coaches were more likely to perceive discrimination as a barrier. The study0́9s finding is that collegiate female student-athletes had a high perception of female coaches and female administrators and a preference for female coaches.

Book excerpt: This study examines the psychological dynamics of self-esteem and belonging among undergraduate students of color at a private, Division 1 (D1), predominantly white institution (PWI) located in the South. Specifically, the study ascertains whether and how (among students of color) athletic status procures particular social and esteem advantages not extended to non-athletes by virtue of social support. Hypothesis 1 stipulates that student athletes of color will report greater well-being (e.g., self-esteem, belonging) than non-athlete students of color. Hypothesis 2 takes gender into consideration, stating that male athletes of color will report greater self-esteem and belonging than female athletes of color, who will still report higher levels of positive outcomes than female non-athletes of color. The gender discrepancy is predicated on the notion that male athletes are adhering to a positive stereotype, whereas female athletes may be labeled un-feminine due to their physicality. Hypothesis 3 investigates the specific mechanisms that underlie possible group differences in self-esteem and belonging, purporting social support from team members and staff -- above and beyond the support proffered by the university at large -- as the chief mediator. Results are presented in group comparisons highlighting mechanisms that explain possible disparities in self-esteem, belonging, college persistence and social support between male and female athletes and non-athletes of color. This research presents a unique angle on college adjustment for minority students at predominantly white institutions.
