Book excerpt: More schools are using transition classes to bridge the gap between developmentally immature children and those who are ready for the traditional first grade class. The purpose of the present study was to compare the academic and social performances of two such groups. Based on the theory that transition students, taught the first grade curriculum on developmental level, could perform academically and socially, comparably to traditional first graders as they finish second grade together. Grouping twenty-six second grade children by sex, age, and school, children's test scores from Primary 1 Stanford Achievement Test in 1989 and the Tennessee Competency Assessment Program in 1990 reflected a significant difference in their academic performance. The test analysis indicated the first grade students performed on a higher academic level on both tests than the transition students. However, the social performance of both groups showed little significant difference between the two groups. Teachers and principals provided input regarding the social performance of the groups through interviews and teacher questionnaires. Although no academic advantage and little social gain was evidenced, the educators strongly supported the transition program.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of a freshmen transition program on student success. Success was measured by achievement in test scores and grades, retention, attendance, and discipline. This study also examined the differential effects of student outcomes by student characteristics to include, sex, race, previous middle school, economic status, disability status, and proficiency in English. There were no significant differences between participant and control groups in the bivariate analysis. There were limited findings when considering students characteristics. There were main effects on Earth Science and World Geography test scores when previous middle school was held as a constant, and there was a main effect on the Earth Science test when disability status was held as a constant. There were two interaction effects. One of these was a negative effect in which males in the participant group actually scored worse on the Algebra I SOL score than did males in the control group. The other interaction effect was that black students in the participant group had fewer disciplinary incidents than did black students in the control group.
