Book An Ethnographic sociolinguistic Approach to Language Proficiency Assessment

Download or read book An Ethnographic sociolinguistic Approach to Language Proficiency Assessment written by Charlene Rivera and published by Multilingual Matters Limited. This book was released on 1983 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of four volumes composed of selected papers from the LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT SYMPOSIUM. The Symposium provided a forum where a broad spectrum of researchers, practitioners and policymakers met to discuss the major issues and research findings which affect language proficiency assessment practices. The work presented in the four volumes will add new insights into the issue of language proficiency assessment. It is believed that the research and theoretical perspectives offered represent a positive step toward attaining the overall objective of developing effective language proficiency assessment procedures and, ultimately, a more equitable education for language minority students. All four volumes have been edited by CHARLENE RIVERA and they will be published in the MULTILINGUAL MATTERS series.

Book Talking and Testing

Download or read book Talking and Testing written by Richard Young and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-07-15 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of current research on the assessment of oral proficiency in a second language. Fourteen chapters focus on the use of the language proficiency interview or LPI to assess oral proficiency. The volume addresses the central issue of validity in proficiency assessment: the ways in which the language proficiency interview is accomplished through discourse.Contributors draw on a variety of discourse perspectives, including the ethnography of speaking, conversation analysis, language socialization theory, sociolinguistic variation theory, human interaction research, and systemic functional linguistics. And for the first time, LPIs conducted in German, Korean, and Spanish are examined as well as interviews in English. This book sheds light on such important issues as how speaking ability can be defined independently of an LPI that is designed to assess it and the extent to which an LPI is an authentic representation of ordinary conversation in the target language. It will be of considerable interest to language testers, discourse analysts, second language acquisition researchers, foreign language specialists, and anyone concerned with proficiency issues in language teaching and testing.

Book Language Learners as Ethnographers

Download or read book Language Learners as Ethnographers written by Celia Roberts and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2001 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the role of cultural studies and intercultural communication in language learning. The book argues that learners who have an opportunity to stay in the target language country can be trained to do an ethnographic project while abroad. Borrowing from anthropologists' the idea of cultural fieldwork and 'writing culture', language learners develop their linguistic and cultural competence through the study of a local group. This book combines a theoretical overview of language and cultural practices with a description of ethnographic approaches and materials specifically designed for language learners.

Book The Construct of Language Proficiency

Download or read book The Construct of Language Proficiency written by Ludo Verhoeven and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 221 pages. The book starts out with a thorough introduction of international literature on models of language proficiency, language development and its assessment. Section 1 deals with first language proficiency and addresses such problems as grammar in early child language, grammatical proficiency and its (in)variance across a range of ages, reading abilities, and writing skills. Section 2 focuses on multilingual proficiency and deals with test bias in relation to the background of the second language learner, bilingual proficiency in ethnic minority children, the development of the second language learner lexicon, communicative competence of school-age children in the context of second language learning, the assessment of foreign language attrition and the dimensionality in oral foreign language proficiency.

Book Methods for the Ethnography of Communication

Download or read book Methods for the Ethnography of Communication written by Judith Kaplan-Weinger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for the Ethnography of Communication is a guide to conducting ethnographic research in classroom and community settings that introduces students to the field of ethnography of communication, and takes them through the recursive and nonlinear cycle of ethnographic research. Drawing on the mnemonic that Hymes used to develop the Ethnography of SPEAKING, the authors introduce the innovative CULTURES framework to provide a helpful structure for moving through the complex process of collecting and analyzing ethnographic data and addresses the larger "how-to" questions that students struggle with when undertaking ethnographic research. Exercises and activities help students make the connection between communicative events, acts, and situations and ways of studying them ethnographically. Integrating a primary focus on language in use within an ethnographic framework makes this book an invaluable core text for courses on ethnography of communication and related areas in a variety of disciplines.

Book Language in Education

Download or read book Language in Education written by Dell H. Hymes and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight essays in ethnolinguistics were compiled for this monograph. "Functions of Speech: An Evolutionary Approach" represents an introduction to the application of linguistic knowledge to the historical and sociological study of peoples. "Speech and Language: On the Origins and Foundations of Inequality among Speakers" expands on the theme of diversity, inequality, and evolution, with discussions of writing and of the views of Bernstein and Jurgen Habermas. "Qualitative/Quantitative Research Methodologies in Education: A Linguistic Perspective" addresses the development of linguistics. The three middle chapters, "What Is Ethnography?""Ethnographic Monitoring," and "Educational Ethnology," are concerned in complementary ways with what counts as legitimate knowledge and who is counted as entitled to know. The status of narrative as a form of knowledge is addressed in "Narrative Thinking and Story-Telling Rights: A Folklorist's Clue to a Critique of Education" (with Courtney Cazden). The final chapter, "Language in Education: Forward to Fundamentals" weaves together many of the themes of the book, expressing a concern that an ethnographic or ethnolinguistic perspective not be trivialized and vulgarized. This book was released on 2020-09-19 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is formally represented around the world by approximately 14,000 Foreign Service officers and other personnel in the U.S. Department of State. Roughly one-third of them are required to be proficient in the local languages of the countries to which they are posted. To achieve this language proficiency for its staff, the State Department's Foreign Service Institute (FSI) provides intensive language instruction and assesses the proficiency of personnel before they are posted to a foreign country. The requirement for language proficiency is established in law and is incorporated in personnel decisions related to job placement, promotion, retention, and pay. A Principled Approach to Language Assessment: Considerations for the U.S. Foreign Service Institute evaluates the different approaches that exist to assess foreign language proficiency that FSI could potentially use. This report considers the key assessment approaches in the research literature that are appropriate for language testing, including, but not limited to, assessments that use task-based or performance-based approaches, adaptive online test administration, and portfolios.
