Book Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders

Download or read book Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders written by Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look around your office. Turn on the TV. Incompetent leadership is everywhere, and there's no denying that most of these leaders are men. In this timely and provocative book, Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic asks two powerful questions: Why is it so easy for incompetent men to become leaders? And why is it so hard for competent people--especially competent women--to advance? Marshaling decades of rigorous research, Chamorro-Premuzic points out that although men make up a majority of leaders, they underperform when compared with female leaders. In fact, most organizations equate leadership potential with a handful of destructive personality traits, like overconfidence and narcissism. In other words, these traits may help someone get selected for a leadership role, but they backfire once the person has the job. When competent women--and men who don't fit the stereotype--are unfairly overlooked, we all suffer the consequences. The result is a deeply flawed system that rewards arrogance rather than humility, and loudness rather than wisdom. There is a better way. With clarity and verve, Chamorro-Premuzic shows us what it really takes to lead and how new systems and processes can help us put the right people in charge.

Book Charismatic Leadership

Download or read book Charismatic Leadership written by David Tuffley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is true that charisma is perceived as the result of certain outward behaviors, true charisma comes from deep within a person who is reaching their fullest potential as a human being. This heightened level of awareness has been called enlightenment, awakening, Satori and many other labels. But these have connotations of mysticism that people in the 21st century may be uncomfortable with. So let us call it self-actualization, the name given to it by humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow. Charisma can be thought of as a subtle light that shines from within a person who is living their life to its fullest potential. People respond to this light and want it for themselves so they are drawn to that person as a leader. They perceive instinctively that here is someone who has reached an advanced state of self-realization and it is natural that they, the observer, should want that for themselves. It is after all a human need to become the fullest expression of your human potential. The qualities of a charismatic person can be summed up quite simply; they are positive (infectiously so), they see the potential in people and want to help them to achieve it, they envisage a bright future, and they are generous with their time and energies. While you might begin now to emulate these qualities, you should understand that they are a by-product of a larger process of personal development called self-actualization, a broad term covering many aspects of personality (this will be explored in detail in a later chapter). Being charismatic relies on a person having the emotional intelligence to know how to communicate with people at an emotional level, making a deep connection that is not possible at a purely rational level. Easier said than done, emotional intelligence is a difficult skill to master for people who operate principally in the intellectual zone. It involves understanding one's own emotions, how to harness them to solve problems, and how to manage and regulate one's emotions and those of others. In our evolutionary past, going back hundreds of thousands, even millions of years, our primate ancestors operated on the emotional level. Emotions are generated by parts of the brain that existed long before those areas that evolved more recently which allow us to think rationally. Perhaps this explains why we are so prone to being influenced by our emotions.

This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Charismatic, Ideological, and Pragmatic (CIP) approach to leadership showcases three unique yet equally viable pathways to leading and influencing others. This book reviews the history of the CIP model of leadership and summarizes the empirical findings supporting the framework. Emerging areas of leadership research on the CIP model are explored, including: followership, shared leadership, measurement, and gender. Contributions from a range of international academics provide readers with insight into the foundation of the CIP theory of leadership and into where the future of leadership perspectives are headed. It includes a chapter for practitioners seeking to understand the framework through an applied lens and offers evidence for a new scale designed to quantify a leader’s CIP profile. Finally, a revised theoretical framework, incorporating key findings to expand the model to meet the diverse needs of future researchers and leaders is offered. This thought-provoking volume will be essential reading for all scholars, researchers and students interested in the charismatic, ideological, and pragmatic approach to leadership, as well as professionals considering the introduction of a new leadership model.

Different leadership styles will be discussed in this work. One of the leading researchers in cognitive and cultural psychology, Howard Gardner, pointed out: "I view leadership as a process that occurs within the minds of individuals who live in a culture - a process that entails the capacities to create stories, to understand and evaluate these stories, and to appreciate the struggle among stories. Ultimately, certain kinds of stories will typically become predominant - in particular, stories that provide an adequate and timely sense of identity for individuals who live within a community or institution. This focus on stories presupposes that some individuals can identify with these stories, and that various individuals feel included or excluded once these stories have spread." (Gardner, 1996).
